  • Patent number: 4752169
Abstract: A blind fastener comprising:a nut with an axial bore therethrough, a bolt extending through the nut with a sleeve encircling the bolt between the head of the bolt and the nut body, and a stop ring provided on a screw threaded portion of the bolt, the bolt having a break groove therein, between the nut body and the bolt head. As the bolt is advanced upwardly during installation, the stop ring abuts the terminal end of the nut body. This sudden resistance to further travel causes the screw threaded portion to fracture at the break groove thus providing a clean break at the break groove substantially filling a cavity in the nut head thereby increasing the strength of the installed fastener and eliminating any need for shaving off the broken-off screw threaded portion.

  • Patent number: 4720223
Abstract: The present invention provides a self-retracting, captive fastener assembly which allows the application of a controlled preload not requiring separate measurement during or after application. The assembly includes the use of a hold-out spring (31) which is isolated and fully retracts the assembly when the installed assembly is not engaged with a substructure. A housing (32) is provided for the hold-out spring (31) and contains the spring (31) when it is fully compressed. For the controlled preload, disc springs (40) are used. The shoulder (60) of the bolt shank portion (24) is staked so as to form protrusions (61,62,63,64) for captivating these mentioned elements upon the bolt. A removable, retaining element or stop-nut (50) is also provided for securement of the fastener to a first structure 65. The stop-nut (50) is constructed so that it must be seated against substructure (70) in order to achieve the controlled deflection of the disc springs (40) and thereby achieve the desired preload application.

  • Patent number: 4693655
Abstract: An internally threaded nut is provided which is to be screwed onto a hub bolt of a vehicle, e.g. an automobile, having, on its outer surface, near the forward or leading end thereof, a plurality of key protrusions oriented in the direction of the axis of the nut, and having also, on its outer surface and rearward of the key protrusions, a modified cylindrical section. The modified cylindrical section is not a true circle and is provided with a first diameter interspersed with several flattened, or larger diameter portions, as viewed in cross-section. The key protrusions are preferably trapezoidal in cross-section, are generally parallel to each other, and each has a specific configuration wherein one or more of the key projections differ in width from the others so as to form a particular combination, which can only be turned by a key element or key socket having matching trapezoidal cavities.

  • Patent number: 4668144
Abstract: A non-rotating toggle bolt assembly which includes a collapsible toggle threadably received on the shank end of a bolt whose length is greater than the thickness of the wall for which the assembly is intended. When the toggle is collapsed, it assumes reduced dimensions to permit its passage through a hole drilled in the wall. On emerging from the hole at the shank end of the bolt, the toggle which is now displaced from the inner surface of the wall, resumes its normal dimensions. The assembly is provided with means which act to prevent rotation of the toggle when, in the course of installation, the operator turns the bolt to advance the toggle on the shank into engagement with the inner surface of the wall to fasten the assembly thereon.

  • Patent number: 4666354
Abstract: The disclosure concerns a fixing device for securing fasteners such as bolts into concrete or other similar material. The device comprises a sleeve member (2, 4) having a block portion (6) in which a nut (14) is set. The block portion (6) has a frusto-conical extension portion (16) joined by shearable links (18) to an intermediate portion (20) of the member which has an internal frusto-conical surface (22) complementing the extrusion portion (16) of the block portion. Tightening the bolt shears the links in the usual way. According to the present invention the device is moulded in two longitudinally divided portions (2) and (4), hinged together by a plastics hinge (10) adjacent the block portion (6). In the as-moulded conditions the portions (2, 4) are arranged end-to-end, but are hinged together to form the device ready for use.

  • Patent number: 4661030
Abstract: A bumper bar comprised of joined together stampings defining a closed box section has a cage attached inside the bumper bar and overlying an elongated opening in the bumper bar. The elongated opening has a major dimension which extends in the direction of desired adjusting movement of the bumper bar relative to the structural member upon which bumper bar is to be mounted. A bolt has a bolt head at least sufficiently smaller than the elongated opening to permit axial insertion of the bolt head through the elongated opening. The bolt head has a major dimension greater than the minor dimension of the elongated opening so that a quarter-turn rotation of the bolt subsequent to insertion through the elongated opening will align the major dimension of the head for engagement with the bumper bar to prevent removal of the bolt from the elongated opening.

  • Patent number: 4659273
Abstract: A lug attachment for detecting the removal of a wheel comprising a frangible shroud and an internally threaded member for attaching said shroud to the lug of a wheel mounting plate. The threaded member comprises a pair of split sleeve sections that laterally flex for engagement with the threads of a lug by an axial thrust. Thereafter, an axial thrust of said shroud clamps and secures the threaded member onto the lugs. Means formed on said shroud retains the threaded member in its axial position of attachment to a lug and prevents removal except by breakage.

  • Patent number: 4658088
Abstract: A self-threading polymeric fastener and blank therefor which can be used, for example, to support a wall plate over an electrical outlet or switch. The fastener blank comprises three portions, all integrally molded together, including a slotted head, a substantially cylindrical shank and a tapered tip. A helical thread is formed on the shank and tip by deforming the outer surfaces thereof without removing any significant amount of polymeric material therefrom. This is accomplished by rotating the tip and shank in a helically threaded bore, such as that provided in an outlet or switch. The polymeric fastener blank can be integrally molded with a polymeric wall plate to make their colors identical.

  • Patent number: 4657459
Abstract: A self-locking fastener having a bearing surface comprising a plurality of sets of serrations arranged to penetrate a workpiece such that, while a resistance to the loosening of the fastener from the workpiece is created, the marring of the workpiece surface is minimized. Use of the fastener is particularly advantageous if the workpiece consists of soft materials such as cast-aluminum or non-heat treated carbon steels. Each set of serration, when viewed as a profile, includes a downwardly inclined surface, a relatively deeper serration and a relatively shallower intermediate serration. The intermediate serration controls the depth of the penetration into a workpiece.

  • Patent number: 4650384
Abstract: An expansion anchor for mounting in a receiving socket in base material to enable an object to be clamped thereto. The anchor comprises a longitudinally split tubular sleeve (1) to which an internally threaded expansion body (6) is retained by means of lugs (10) thereof engaging slots (2,3,11) in the body of the sleeve (1). The slots (2,3,11) are provided to permit the tubular sleeve (1) to expand into gripping contact with the receiving socket as the expansion body (6) is drawn axially within the sleeve (1) by a threaded anchor rod (15). The sleeve (1) is provided with support means (8,12,13,14) for the anchor rod (15) when in engagement with the expansion body (6). The support means (12,13,14) constitute telescopic spacer elments between the head of the anchor rod (15) and the tubular sleeve (1) which allow free relative movement between the expansion body (6) and the head of the anchor rod (15) until the anchor is set in the receiving socket.
