Abstract: A process for coating particulate zirconia for use in ceramics is claimed. The particulate zirconia is coated with a hydrous oxide of a stabilizing metal such as yttrium, an alkaline earth metal or a rare earth metal by hydrolysis of a salt of the metal. An initial dispersion of the zirconia is prepared at a pH above 7.5 and, preferably, in the presence of an organic dispersing agent. The coated zirconia produced according to the process has been shown to form ceramic bodies with a higher strength than those prepared from particulate zirconia coated by prior known processes.

  • Patent number: 5221336
Abstract: Reactive metals, such as titanium or nickel-chrome superalloys containing rare earths, are cast with mold and/or core surface areas formed from an improved slurry. The improved slurry contains yttria to form an inert surface which is exposed to the molten reactive metal. In order to prevent premature gelation of the slurry, the forming of defects in the mold and/or core surface areas, and the forming of defects in the cast article, the slurry contains a source of hydroxyl ions. The source of hydroxyl ions is sufficient to result in the slurry having a pH of at least 10.2 six days after initially mixing the slurry. The source of hydroxyl ions may be a metal alkali or an organic hydroxide. It is believed that the source of hydroxyl ions functions as a hydration suppressant for the yttria to prevent premature gelation of the slurry. The slurry contains a silicon oxide (SiO.sub.2) to alkali ratio which is equivalent to a silicon oxide to sodium oxide (Na.sub.

  • Patent number: 5214009
Abstract: A ceramic sinter whose mother phase substantially satisfies a sialon composition. This sialon containing ceramic sinter contains at least one kind of compound selected from the group of oxides, carbides, nitrides, and silicides of hafnium, niobium, or titanium in the range of from 0.2 to 40 weight %. The compound of hafnium, niobium, or titanium is present independently in the mother phase in particle-dispersive form. The dispersed particles contribute to improving the mechanical strength, fracture toughness, and heat impact resistance because the sinter body is reinforced by dispersion. The sialon containing ceramic sinter is so excellent in high-temperature properties that it is suitable for use in high-temperature structural materials. Further, a .beta.

  • Patent number: 5213715
Abstract: A directionally conductive polymer (DCP) provides an electrical interconnect between terminal or conductors on a pair of electrical components. The DCP is applied in viscous film form to the interface between the two components. The DCP comprises a resinous matrix containing metal particles in an amount normally causing the film to act as an electrical insulator. Electrical conduction through the film is normally inhibited in an unstressed state. When a stress is applied to the film, the metal particles make contact to form a continuous electrical path through the film in alignment with the applied stress. The metal particles maintain electrical insulating properties in regions of the film not subjected to the applied stress. In one embodiment, the film includes a metal polymer dispersed in a dielectric carrier resin. A first resinous material dissolved in a solvent contains a dispersion of metal particles. The dielectric material comprises a second resinous material dissolved in the same solvent.
