  • Patent number: 6826582
Abstract: A file system and method serves to create and manage content. The file system includes at least one directory having at least one file containing data, but about which at least one file has no information. A repository of metadata provides information about the data in the files. Phantom files are created which are designated by names and associated attributes, point to data in base files, without specifying a path name to the base files.

  • Patent number: 6823343
Abstract: A database is used to store user interface state information. The database is accessed by a key having a service ID field, a caller ID field, and a caller context ID field. The caller context ID is used to identify the context in the application program from which the user interface is called. In this manner, the system can differentiate between calls from different portions of the application program which can have different user expectations of the desirable user interface state.

  • Patent number: 6813617
Abstract: A fine-grained access control mechanism uses policy functions that are associated with a database object (e.g. table and view). The policy functions are invoked, when, for example, a database server detects that a query is issued against the database object. The policy functions return optimizer hints, which are added to the query.

  • Patent number: 6804674
Abstract: A scalable content management system manages searches from a local content manager and a plurality of remote content managers. A single scalable content manager manages data in a content repository or file system and its associated metadata in the same content repository or in a database, which will greatly simplify both content management logic and client application logic. The system architecture enables users to add scalable content managers as needed, which allows users to easily scale up the scalable content manager system, in both data size and user connection, as business grows. With the present scalable system architecture, a multi-node content management system will appear to be a single content management system to users, providing location transparency.

  • Patent number: 6804671
Abstract: A pluggable tablespace is enabled by logically partitioning a database into a set of tablespaces and storing all of the tablespaces disk pointers in tablespace-relative format. A pluggable set of tablespaces is unplugged by generating the associated metadata, and making a binary copy of the tablespaces. The pluggable set of tablespaces is plugged into a target database by making the pluggable set accessible to the target database and incorporating the associated metadata, without patching any of the disk pointers.

  • Patent number: 6801912
Abstract: A data processing system, method, and product are disclosed for self-directed distance learning. The data processing system includes a client computer system coupled to a server computer system utilizing a network. An Internet-based distance learning environment is first accessed from which a first one of multiple, separate information streams is selected. The selected information stream is associated with an educational presentation. The selected information stream is then used to select a second information stream. Both information streams are then presented.

  • Patent number: 6799174
Abstract: A networked catalog search, retrieval, and information correlation and matching system is disclosed. The system allows suppliers to publish information in electronic catalogs, structure the information in an object oriented representation distributed across a network of computers, for example, the Internet. The system also enables customers to search and retrieve information on products and suppliers that match dynamically specified customer requirements. Through retrieving protocol compliant pages or other information, a search engine forwards retrieved pages to a database which sorts received information by the information's internal organization structure. By searching the information as stored in the knowledge base, a user may quickly retrieve the stored information as highly tailored to the user's search strategy.

  • Patent number: 6789080
Abstract: A method for displaying hypertext data comprises displaying a first document represented in a first markup representation and containing at least one hypertext link, and in response to a user input selecting a first hypertext link in the first document, accessing an external document represented in a second markup representation, the first hypertext link having an original state pointing to the external document. The method further comprises converting the second markup representation of the external document into a first markup representation of the external document, and incorporating the first markup representation of the external document into the first document. The method can also include modifying the first hypertext link from the original state to a second state having an internal link pointed to the first markup representation of the external document in the first document.

  • Patent number: 6789081
Abstract: An information management technique includes gathering and storing data from a plurality of sources of data. The gathered and stored data is then filtered and prioritized. The filtered and prioritized data is then packaged and delivered to an end user. The data is filtered and prioritized in a plurality of layers arranged sequentially, a first layer having a broadest categorization of data and each subsequent lower layer having a narrower categorization of data than its adjacent higher layer. The plurality of data sources may include external sources of data such as sources of data accessible on the Internet and internal sources of data such as sources of data accessible on a corporate Intranet. When the data is prioritized as a “high” priority, then the data may be immediately delivered to the end user while if the data is prioritized as a “low” priority, a signal may be sent to the end user and the data delivered only upon a request by the end user.

  • Patent number: 6785676
Abstract: A system and method for annotating resource results obtained in a customer self service system that performs resource search and selection. The method comprising the steps of: receiving a resource response set of results obtained in response to a current user query and receiving a user context vector associated with the current user query, the user context vector comprising data associating an interaction state with the user; applying an ordering and annotation function for mapping the user context vector with the resource response set to generate an annotated response set having one or more annotations; and, controlling the presentation of the resource response set to the user according to the annotations, wherein the ordering and annotation function is executed interactively at the time of each user query.

  • Patent number: 6785682
Abstract: The present invention relates to a data processing system, method and computer program product for improving the operation of, for example, a message broker. By not constructing messages from stored data in advance of a demand, the invention reduces the processing overhead. A further aspect provides for maintaining a data structure for a messaging system having an application capable of producing an output structured message in a prescribed format and capable of adding a received structure message to a data structure contained within a storage medium of the system.

  • Patent number: 6782391
Abstract: Disclosed is a method for improving the quality of Metadata and information resident on an Internet self-service resource such as a knowledge base (KB). The present invention assists in reducing and/or negating the time customer service agents spent to publish their responses to customer inquiries in a KB. An Intelligent Knowledge Base Content Categorizer (IKBCC) accomplishes both these goals by automatically, intelligently, and consistently evaluating the contents of customer service agent (CSA) responses to customer requests. It proactively determines the value of adding a response to the existing database, and methodically produces Metadata to describe each new KB entry. The IKBCC uses an algorithm that factors in variables (such as KB data, CSA information, administrative parameters, etc.), to evaluate whether a KB entry already exists or should be added. It then determines the nature of the Metadata to describe the added entries.

  • Patent number: 6782398
Abstract: A method for executing commands on multiple computers of a network is provided in which a command may be entered at one computer, replicated, and sent to other computers of the network. Each computer receiving the replicated command may also repeat the replication process and sent the command to still other computers. The command may be stored and replicated in conjunction with the replication of entries or records of a database. When one computer update another computer as to the changes made to its individual copies of the database, it transmits a replication message to the other computer. When the other computer receives the replication message, it may store the command in a record of its copy of the database and, if appropriate, execute it. A record type field may be used to distinguish command records from other types of database records.

  • Patent number: 6772148
Abstract: In a knowledge classification system, both the information sources and queries are processed to generate knowledge representation graph structures. The graph structures for both the query and the information sources are then converted to views and displayed to a searcher. By manipulating the graph structure views for each information source, the searcher can examine the source for relevance. A search can be performed by comparing the graph structure of the query to the graph structure of each information source by a graph matching computer algorithm. Information sources are classified by constructing hierarchies of knowledge representations. The simplest construction is obtained by using the knowledge representation of a query as the top of the hierarchy. The structures in the hierarchy are substructures of the query. The hierarchy of structures may also be constructed by using the knowledge representation of the query as the bottom of the hierarchy.
