  • Patent number: 4067278
Abstract: A method of decorating a fabric in which an elongate strip of fabric is sewed to a base fabric along a line spaced inwardly from the edge of the strip of fabric. The base fabric with strips sewed thereto is then washed in a washing machine so as to cause the edges of the strips of fabric outside of the line of stitching to fray and to thus take on a decorative appearance. The invention also includes the fabric produced by this method with the strips of material being arranged in any desired decorative pattern on the base material.

  • Patent number: 4065841
Abstract: An improved dampening roller produced by grinding a thermoplastic cylinder under conditions causing strands of the thermoplastic material to be abraded away from the surface and redeposited onto the still soft surface of the thermoplastic cylinder and to bond thereto. The particles are deposited at an angle, producing channels which permit edge removal of excess dampening solution, preventing liquid buildup at the center of the roller.

  • Patent number: 4064607
Abstract: The compression roller in a paper producing machine has a relatively thin outer casing which rotates and is supported directly below the point of contact by a stationary support system. The support system includes an elongated cylinder and piston assembly. Attached to the piston is a pivotable support bar whose surface conforms substantially to the inside surface of the rotating casing. A pump supplies pressurized fluid medium through conduits in the piston to a long channel in the support bar, thus providing a fluid film on which the casing is supported. Side pockets in the support bar are connected to the long channel and serve to stabilize and centralize the position of the support bar.

  • Patent number: 4062131
Abstract: An odor absorbing insole or insock covering the inner sole of footwear has a bottom inner sole engaging open cellular resilient cushion layer, an intermediate nonwoven random fiber felt mat porous layer having the fibers coated with an odor and moisture absorbing chemical such as activated charcoal or silica gel, and a porous slippery abrasion resisting top fabric layer protecting the foot or sock of the wearer against discoloration or irritation. The layers of the insole are laminated into integral unitary relation by heat sealing or by binders which do not impede flow of air. The alternating application and release of foot pressure on the insole as when walking will alternately compress and expand the open cellular cushion layer to pump air through intermediate layer and abrasion resisting top layer for circulating air in the footwear around the foot into intimate contact with the chemical for efficient absorption of moisture from foot perspiration and destruction of foot odors.

  • Patent number: 4062096
Abstract: The roll comprises an arbor having a sleeve fitted over its central portion, together with means for introducing hydraulic fluid under pressure between arbor and sleeve to expand the latter and vary its crown. In one embodiment the arbor is provided with a fixed shoulder at one end having an undercut bevel in its inner face and a movable collar on the other end, likewise provided with a shoulder having an undercut bevel on its inner face, and the sleeve has bevelled ends. The hydraulic means are adapted to urge the collar toward the first shoulder, wedging the ends of the sleeve against the arbor. In another embodiment, the arbor is tapered slightly at one end and the inner surface of the sleeve end is also tapered so that movement of the collar wedges the sleeve over the taper of the arbor. A filler is also provided to fill most of the space between arbor and sleeve and so reduce the amount of hydraulic fluid required to fill the roll.

  • Patent number: 4062097
Abstract: A deflection-compensated roll of the type which is adapted to be used in the calender or press section of a paper machine. The roll has an inner non-rotating axle and an outer shell surrounding and rotatable with respect to the axle, this axle and shell having a common axis. The axle includes an inner magnet structure while the shell includes an outer magnet structure which rotates together with the shell. These inner and outer magnet structures cooperate to provide attraction between the shell and axle on one side of the above axis and repulsion between the shell and axle on the opposite side of the above axis, to achieve in this way a deflection-compensation.

  • Patent number: 4058878
Abstract: A controlled deflection roll comprising a stationary support and a substantially tubular-shaped roll shell rotatable about said support. Between the support and the roll shell there are arranged a number of movable piston-like hydrostatic pressure elements having contact surfaces serving to support the roll shell. The invention contemplates providing the pressure elements with substantially flat side surfaces extending in the direction of movement of the pressure elements. The side surfaces of neighboring pressure elements disposed at the same side thereof are located in a common plane. In order to connect neighboring pressure elements there are provided connection components having resilient flaps or tabs which bear against the flat side surfaces of at least two neighboring pressure elements.

  • Patent number: 4058877
Abstract: The deflection-controlled roll has a roll shell rotatable about a fixed beam with a plurality of hydraulic piston support devices along the roll for exerting support forces between the beam and the roll shell. The roll shell has weakened zones along its length for reducing the stiffness of the shell. The weakened zones may comprise grooves, circumferential rows of bores or tangential slots, corrugated annular inserts, etc. The weakened zones may be formed between annular portions of the roll shell aligned with the operating surfaces of the support devices. Preferably the support devices form hydrostatic support fluid layers between the operating surfaces and the roll shell. Lift-off support devices may be employed.

  • Patent number: 4055860
Abstract: A safety cap has an energy absorbing suspension including crown straps for supporting engagement with the crown of a wearer's head connected to elastically deformable, rupturable and controlled plastically deformable portions of connecting means attached to anchor means in the shell of the cap. The connecting means have end portions adapted to be attached to and wedgingly engage the anchor means. The shock or impact of a blow against the shell suspended on the resisting wearer's head is partially absorbed initially by a wedging action which continues until the end portions are fully seated relative to the anchor means. Further, loading causes the crown straps to pull against, deform and bend energy absorbing portions of the connecting means into adjoining apertures of predetermined size and shape. Finally, at a predetermined force, the bending moments at opposite ends of the energy absorbing portions exceed the tensile yield strength of the material and causes the portions to rupture.
