  • Patent number: 5018355
Abstract: The present invention relates to apparatus and a method for using that apparatus for replacing an existing governor valve on a steam chest of a high pressure turbine that enables chemical foam to be input from outside the turbine for cleaning chemical deposits from the turbine. This device enables chemical foam to be input without penetrating the turbine's main steam loop. When the cleaning process has been finished, the original governor valve can be easily replaced in a short period of time. The apparatus includes an inlet for the chemical foam, a structure for attaching the apparatus to the steam chest of the turbine, and a structure which allows the foam to flow from the steam chest to the turbine.

  • Patent number: 5012649
Abstract: A power actuator comprises an enclosure (5) separated by transverse partitions (6) into two sections (7, 8) which are filled in succession with a heat-transfer agent. A load-bearing casing (1) the walls of which are made of a material possessing a "form-remembering" ability is arranged along the longitudinal axis of the enclosure (5). At a definite temperature the walls of the load-bearing casing (1) deflect inwardly, thereby reducing the internal volume of the load-bearing casing (1). The transverse partitions are made of an elastic material and are installed for coming in contact with the external surfaces of the walls of the casing (1) when their position is changed.

  • Patent number: 5010735
Abstract: A centrifugal heat engine comprises a first member rotatably mounted on a second member. The first member has an annular chamber on its periphery containing a vaporizable working fluid, and a central chamber separated from the annular chamber by a bulkhead. The central chamber contains an operating liquid and an hydraulic turbine mounted on the second member which projects into the central compartment and divides the same into two axially displaced compartments each of which contains operating liquid. The working fluid in the annular chamber is heated and vaporized. A conduit conducts vaporized working fluid in the annular chamber into one of the compartments wherein the vaporized working fluid expands in the operating liquid producing a liquid/gas mixture in the one compartment. Rotation of the first member creates a pressure differential between the two compartments that is related to the rotational speed of the first member and the density distribution of the fluids in the two compartments.

  • Patent number: 5009069
Abstract: A conduit extends from a platform on the surface of the ocean into cold deep ocean water containing dissolved gases. Sufficient water is drawn from the top of the conduit to cause the gas containing cold deep ocean water to enter the lower end of the conduit and release dissolved gas thereby forming a foam which causes the bulk density of the foam to fall. The change in bulk density causes the foam to move upward through the conduit pushing the foam to higher heights in an effort to reach pressure equilibrium inside and outside the conduit at a level of incipient foaming. The moving foam is used to drive a turbine or otherwise provide useful energy.

  • Patent number: 5005360
Abstract: A solar energy system for generating electricity. The system tracks the sun during the day to produce a concentrated beam of light which is focused through a fixed opening in a heat storage chamber. The beam of light pressurizes the chamber and seals the fixed opening to prevent depressurization of the chamber. A closed circuit fluid heat transfer system collects heat from the heat storage chamber and powers a turbine. Heat powers the closed circuit system. A pump is not used in the closed circuit system. The turbine powers an electrical generator.

  • Patent number: 5005357
Abstract: A turbine system utilizes the ebb and flow of the natural movements of tidal wave action to generate power. Waves are allowed to enter and exit from a chamber while at the top of the chamber a narrow exit allows for air flow into an out of the chamber is response to the water flow. A turbine placed in line with the air flow has pivoting blades that allows the turbine to rotate in one direction is response to the varying air pressures. This rotating turbine can be used to produce electrical power. An additional feature is an adjustable strike disc that limits the pivoting action of the turbine blades.

  • Patent number: 5005349
Abstract: A Stirling engine is provided in which the burner has an annular shape and is disposed in an outside lower portion of the heater. The burner has a plurality of fuel delivery holes and a plurality of air supplying holes which open through an inner circumferential surface of the burner. The arrangement permits the Stirling engine to use a fuel line under a low pressure and to be easily used as a power source of a compressor for an air-conditioning and heating device for domestic use. Also, the arrangement permits the Stirling engine to be constructed without a fuel/air mixing device and to be used with a smaller blower. Furthermore, the arrangement permits the burner to be made from a variety of material, thereby reducing the manufacturing cost.

  • Patent number: 5003777
Abstract: In a free piston Stirling machine, a gas spring apparatus for applying two distinctly different spring rates to the displacer during the displacer's excursion past a center point in opposite ends of the work space. The apparatus comprises a cylinder formed in a gas spring housing, in which a gas spring piston is slidably mounted. On opposite sides of the gas spring piston there are two unequal volume gas spring chambers. Between the gas spring chambers there is a bleed hole which divides the cylinder into the two chambers and allows communication between the gas spring chambers and a gas reservoir. While the piston is compressing one gas spring chamber, the opposite is in communication with the gas reservoir and vise versa. This creates two distinctly different spring rates applied to the displacer.
