  • Patent number: 5003442
Abstract: A lighting assembly having a series of telescoping tubes is mounted in a box, and an interior spring urges the tubes to extend out of the box into a use position. A light on the free end of the tubes simulates a candle. One end of cable within the spring is connected to the free end of the tubes, and the other cable end is wound on a drum connected to a brake/motor combination. When the brake is released, the cable unwinds and the tubes extend in response to the urging of the spring. When the tubes are to be retracted, the motor winds the cable back onto the drum. A group of assemblies are mounted in the box and their cable drums controlled by a common drive shaft. Drums of different diameters are provided to determine the extension of the cables, and hence the tubes, to thereby provide lighting fixtures of different heights.

  • Patent number: 5002155
Abstract: A positive lubrication delivery system for lubricating a rotatable gear comprises a stationary shroud configured and dimensioned to encompass a segment of the gear to be lubricated. The shroud defines with the gear segment, intermediate the circumferential outer surface of the gear segment and the adjacent surface of the shroud, a channel of diminishing clearance in the direction of gear rotation. Lubricant introduced into the channel is confined and subsequently caused to be spread over the circumferential outer surface of the gear in response to its rotation.

  • Patent number: 5001902
Abstract: Cogeneration of electricity and carbon dioxide with low NO.sub.x combustion of vaporizable liquid fuels, particularly alcohols and hydrocarbons, is achieved by feeding the vaporized fuel admixed with a limited amount of air to a porous fiber burner and effecting flameless combustion on the outer surface of the burner to yield a flue gas with a very low content of NO.sub.x and other pollutants. The liquid fuel is vaporized by injection into hot combustion air preheated by heat exchange with the flue gas while heat from the burner is utilized to produce high-pressure steam which is supplied to a steam turbine that drives an electric generator. The flue gas is then passed through an absorption system for the recovery carbon dioxide, part of the steam being used in the absorption system. When desired, recovered carbon dioxide can be liquefied with refrigeration produced by the cogeneration system.

  • Patent number: 5000003
Abstract: The purpose of the Wicks Combined Cycle Engine (WCCE) is to provide a very substantial fuel efficiency improvement relative to the liquid cooled, internal combustion, piston engines that are now utilized by virtually all automobiles, trucks, and buses, and most trains and ships. The method is to recover virtually all of the internal combustion engine heat that is normally rejected through the engine coolant radiator and through the engine exhaust, by a Rankine Cycle that is comprised of a feed pump, feed heater, boiler, superheater, turbine or other type of mechanical power producing expander and air cooled condenser. The reference analysis shows a potential efficiency increase from 25% for existing practice engines to 41.8% for the WCCE.

  • Patent number: 4999750
Abstract: A flashlight includes a cylindrical casing containing a battery. A bulb is slidably disposed in a socket member carried in the casing, and a head assembly is rotatably mounted on one end of the casing. The bulb has an annular flange forming an electrical terminal. The head assembly has a preloaded pressure pad arranged for engaging the bulb flange. When the head assembly is rotated in one direction, the bulb is moved toward the battery and the bulb flange is moved into contact with another electrical terminal in the casing. This closes an electrical circuit connecting the battery and the bulb, illuminating the bulb. A spring carried by the socket member is disposed between the battery and the bulb. When the head assembly is rotated in the opposite direction, the spring urges the bulb away from the battery and moves the bulb flange out of contact with the electrical terminal in the casing. This opens the electrical circuit between the battery and the bulb, extinguishing the bulb.

  • Patent number: 4996846
Abstract: An existing geothermal power plant, utilizing geothermal steam from a production well in a geothermal field to drive a multi-stage steam turbine when the available steam pressure from the production well for rated mass for steam through the turbine is less than the design pressure of the turbine, is retrofitted by increasing the mass flow of steam from the production well by an incremental amount. Substantially all of the incremental amount of steam is diverted to an organic fluid Rankine cycle power plant for converting heat in the diverted steam to power and producing waste fluid in the form of steam condensate and non-condensable gases. The waste fluid is injected into a reinjection well in the geothermal field. Preferably, the non-diverted portion of steam is applied to the steam turbine and an intermediate stage of the turbine where the design pressure of the stage matches the steam pressure of the applied steam.

  • Patent number: 4996840
Abstract: An apparatus for generating rotary motion from rise and fall motion of waves includes an outer hollow sleeve, a float sealably attached across the upper end of the outer sleeve to define an interior cavity, prevent entry of water into the cavity and provide the outer sleeve with sufficient buoyancy to floatably follow up and down motion of waves, an inner hollow sleeve fitted telescopically within the outer sleeve, and an anchoring arrangement attached to the inner sleeve for restraining it from following up and down motion of waves with the outer sleeve and float. The outer sleeve will slidably move up and down relative to the inner sleeve as the outer sleeve and float floatably follow up and down motion of waves and correspondingly will draw a flow of water upwardly and force a flow of water downwardly through the inner sleeve. The apparatus also includes a single rotary motion-producing mechanism mounted within the inner sleeve intersecting and engaging the flow of water through the inner sleeve.

  • Patent number: 4995234
Abstract: LNG is pumped to high pressure, vaporized, further heated and then expanded to create rotary power that is used to generate electrical power. A reservoir of carbon dioxide at about its triple point is created in an insulated vessel to store energy in the form of refrigeration recovered from the evaporated LNG. During peak electrical power periods, liquid carbon dioxide is withdrawn therefrom, pumped to a high pressure, vaporized, further heated, and expanded to create rotary power which generates additional electrical power. The exhaust from a fuel-fired combustion turbine, connected to an electrical power generator, heats the high pressure carbon dioxide vapor. The discharge stream from the CO.sub.2 expander is cooled and at least partially returned to the vessel where vapor condenses by melting stored solid carbon dioxide. During off-peak periods, CO.sub.
