Patent number: 5390425Abstract: A tool guiding measuring apparatus or apparatus for measuring a portion of a workpiece and guiding a tool during an operation on the workpiece. The apparatus includes an aligning body portion for positioning the apparatus in a desired orientation against a workpiece. Two tapes are provided on the aligning body portion for measuring the dimension of a portion of the workpiece. A selectively positionable clamp on a free end of the tape is used to calibrate the apparatus to provide a true measure on the tape of the dimension of the workpiece while compensating for the dimensions of the apparatus and tool. The selectively positionable clamp securely attaches to each of the tapes at a desired calibration position on the respective tape to provide ease of use and repeatable measuring. The apparatus also includes a clamping device which clamps the apparatus to the workpiece to prevent movement of the apparatus while cutting.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 1993Date of Patent: February 21, 1995Inventor: Alexander Gilberts

Patent number: 5388341Abstract: A method and system for measuring a profile of a strip of material produced in a reversing mill in which a direction of travel of the strip is reversible includes a single thickness gauge that measures the thickness of the strip and generates the thickness signals, and a moving device coupled to the gauge. The moving device controllably moves the gauge transversely to the strip so that the gauge measures the thickness of the strip and different points across a width of the strip in one pass of the strip through the gauge. The moving device maintains the gauge in a stationary position in another pass of the strip through the gauge such that the gauge measures the thickness of the strip and different points along the longitudinal lines of the strip. The measurements of the thickness of the strip at the different points are interpreted into profile data. This profile data can be either displayed or used by a mill computer to control the processing of the strip.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 1993Date of Patent: February 14, 1995Assignee: Data Measurement CorporationInventor: Bipin Patel

Patent number: 5386639Abstract: A sideslip tester detects sideslip and scrub in a vehicle having a steering axle and one or more pairs of tandem axles. The sideslip tester has a runway having a measurement plate which is moved laterally with respect to its longitudinal axis as a tire of the vehicle passes over the measurement plate as a result of lateral forces acting upon the tire. A lateral movement sensor operatively connected to the measurement plate determines the amount of lateral movement of the measurement plate as the vehicle tire passes over the plate and provides an output corresponding to the amount of lateral movement measured. The sideslip tester can determine when it is presented with tandem axles. When it is presented with tandem axles, the sideslip tester will determine the scrub angle of the tandem axles to determine if they are parallel.Type: GrantFiled: April 23, 1993Date of Patent: February 7, 1995Assignee: Hunter Engineering CompanyInventors: Nicholas J. Patent number: 5381604Abstract: An integral angle measurement device employs a printed circuit board having electronic components mounted on the front surface thereof and having a pair of sensor plates etched into the back surface thereof. Containment of the sensor fluid adjacent the sensor plates is accomplished by soldering a sensor cover to an etched sealing ring on the back of the circuit board. The sensor plates etched into the back of the printed circuit board, in combination with the sensor fluid, act as variable resistors whose resistance changes as a function of their angle of rotation from a reference position. An output signal across these variable resistors is in or out of phase with an applied reference signal. The output signal is demodulated with the same reference signal and then filtered to a DC level that corresponds to the angle of rotation. An output stage serves as a driver and also as a means for permitting the user to remotely control the electronic gain of the angle measurement device.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 1994Date of Patent: January 17, 1995Assignee: Cline Labs, Inc.Inventors: Jeffrey C. Patent number: 5377417Abstract: A thread pitch cylinder gage for an internally threaded bore in a workpiece, according to one embodiment, includes a gage post having a bearing surface extending through an externally threaded sleeve. The sleeve is trapped on the bearing surface by a retaining cap at the end of the gage post. A finger on the bearing surface engages a notch in the sleeve to prevent rotation of the sleeve relative to the bearing surface, while permitting relative axial motion. The sleeve includes two collections of retaining cavities with balls trapped therein, one at each end of the sleeve. The cavities, and therefore the balls, are centered between the flanks of a thread on the sleeve, and the balls are radially slidable between a retracted and a locked position.
