  • Patent number: 5363562
Abstract: An opening clearance measuring tool that functions as a combination taper gauge and parallel gauge includes a wedge-shaped "taper block", a sliding linear scale predisposed to parallel movement along an upper edge of the taper block, and a digital read-out linear scale measuring and display unit that accurately measures a translational displacement of the sliding scale with respect to the taper block and displays the displacement in millimeters. The angle between the upper and lower edge surfaces of the taper block forms the wedge of the tool and defines the particular slope or "taper" for the gauge. The slope is predetermined to incorporate a linear conversion factor between metric and English units so that the display may be used to indicate clearance measurements expressed in mils. The scale measuring and display unit is fixedly secured to the taper block and, as the linear scale slider is moved past (through) the scale display unit, the translational displacement of the slider is measured and displayed.

  • Patent number: 5363559
Abstract: A telescope inner tube locking device and method for positively locking the telescope inner tube in it's previously aligned position. The locking is accomplished by using a biased locking screw which operates to apply a force against the inner tube of the telescope while the windage and elevation adjustment screws on the telescope are moved. Thereafter, the biased locking screw locks the inner tube against the windage and elevation adjustment screws. In a modification of the preferred embodiment, the inner tube of the telescope may also be locked by using a locking screw constructed similarly to the elevation or windage screws in combination with a separate spring bias. The separate spring bias will apply a force against the windage and elevation screws of the telescope and the locking screw will lock the inner tube in place. The tube may also be locked by a third locking screw without using a bias.

  • Patent number: 5363563
Abstract: A workpiece holding system includes a connector for mounting a workpiece-holding pallet or upper plate to a workstation with the high degree of accuracy that is necessary for workpiece machining operations. The upper plate connects to the workstation via a pair oppositely directed, extendable/retractable connectors aligned along an axis of connection, with a total of four connectors and two spaced axes of connection. Each connector includes a pin, an actuating knob and a wrap spring. For each connector, extension and retraction along the respective axis occurs by rotation of the actuating knob. The wrap spring interconnects the actuating knob to the pin in a slippable manner. The wrap spring acts as a torque limiting device during rotation of the knob to extend the pin into engagement with the upper plate, and it acts as a clutch during rotation of the knob to retract the pin from engagement with the pallet.

  • Patent number: 5361508
Abstract: A body, having a straight-edged rule fixed thereto, and transverse thereto, slidably receives a pair of blocks which also have straight-edged rules fixed thereto. All the rules are parallel, and one thereof is used to engage a proximate wall surface, while the other two are adjustably set to take the measure across a last-laid tile. Then, the first, which engages the wall surface is fully retracted, while the adjustably-set other two rules are advanced, with the body, to the wall surface. The outermost rule, then, along its straight edge, defines whereat a next tile is to be cut to fit an undersized space.

  • Patent number: 5361507
Abstract: An infant measuring and growth charting device having a substantially flat bottom base of a length and width to accommodate infants to be measured, a fixed head board, and a slideable locking foot board, the infant being place in the device, the foot board slid forward to touch the bottoms of the infants feet, the infants legs being fully extended, and the device locked into place. An embedded ruler is affixed into the upper surface of the bottom base, and a viewing hole in a portion of the sliding foot board, over the embedded ruler, follows, and displays the measurements of the infant, and when the exact measurement of the infant is displayed in the viewing hole, the foot board is locked into that position, and this exact measurement will be in the viewing hole for later recording, or, photographing. After the infant is removed from the measuring device, a T-square charting device is inserted into the same groove used to guide the moveable foot board.

  • Patent number: 5359781
Abstract: A self centering guide pipe axis laser guide is based on the use of three parallel links spaced 120 degrees apart which are engaged to be expanded or contracted. When expanded the links contact the inside diameter of the pipe which accordingly establishes the center axis of the pipe. The driving means for the links is a rotating screw mounted in a base centrally located with respect to the three links. In the front of the base is a laser module whose beam is aligned with the center axis of the pipe once the links contact the inner diameter of the pipe. Gauges mounted in a saddle on top of the pipe determine the proper slope once the center axis has been established. A calibrated scale on the guide can be used for determining both inner and outer diameters of the pipe. While the laser guide has been illustrated in determining the center line of pipes, it also has other uses such as aligning pillow blocks to a center line.

  • Patent number: 5359782
Abstract: An apparatus for measuring compound angles. This apparatus makes use of the standard T-bevel square, which is capable of measuring only a single angle. The invention is a compound angle blade with a split collet joint. The compound blade attaches by replacing the bolt of the T-bevel with fastening means attached to the split collet joint of the invention. This fastening means secures both the compound angle blade and the standard T-bevel square blade. The split collet joint which is attached perpendicularly to the main body of the T-bevel moves in a 360 degree radius parallel to the main body of the T-bevel. The compound angle blade is capable of rotation in approximately a 180 degree radius relative to the split collet joint. The combination of the rotation of the split collet joint and the compound angle blade allows for compound angle measurements both perpendicular and askew relative to the angle of the standard T-bevel. The angles of both blades are fixed by the same fastening action.

  • Patent number: 5351410
Abstract: The invention relates to an inspection device for inspecting the dimensions of an object, the device being of the type comprising a support-forming portion together with an elastically deformable system having two measurement arms and an element connected to the arms in such a manner as to be displaced in an axial direction for co-operating with an associated displacement sensor. According to the invention, the deformable system is in the form of a one-piece element that is generally W-shaped, with two hinged measurement arms connected together by two link arms, together with an axially movable central arm; the one-piece element is essentially flat, and it deforms in its own plane when contactors provided at the ends of the hinged measurement arms are moved apart or towards each other. The device is particularly applicable to inspecting inside or outside diameters of mechanical workpieces.

  • Patent number: 5349761
Abstract: The linear measuring device comprises a rail (1) with a fixed measuring jaw (4) and a slide (5) with a movable measuring jaw (6). A holding member (9) with a handle hole (10) is adjustably mounted on the rail (1). The slide (5) has a ring (20) arranged displaceably therein. This ring is connected with a clamping piece (30) via connecting elements (36, 39). This clamping piece, after attaining a predetermined measuring pressure, is brought into the clamped position on the rail (1) and thus permits the maintenance of a constant measuring pressure, the slide (5) being shiftable, with the clamping piece (30) being locked in place, under the action of the spring (32) with respect to the clamping piece (30) whereby the measuring object can be adjusted into the precise measuring position under spring force. The arrangement of handle hole (10) and ring (20) offers the advantage that maximally precise measurements can be quickly performed in correspondence with a scissor-like operation of the device.

  • Patent number: 5347721
Abstract: A drafting tool for drawing a circle or curved arc has interlocked, independently rotatable concentric rings. The rings have radially extending openings that can be aligned to form a radial track. A carriage for carrying a pencil or other marking element is slidable along the track to a desired radial position. The carriage can occupy one or more than one of the rings and rotates with the ring(s) around a center point. The carriage has a locking structure that is spring biased to retract and advances to lock the carriage in position at the desired radius when the pencil or the like is inserted. The locking structure can have a tooth for engaging between teeth along the radial openings in the track, the teeth on the track forming part of the sliding support for the carriage. The rings have complementary tongues and grooves, and nodules on at least one of the abutting surfaces of the tongues and grooves minimizes surface contact to reduce friction.
