Abstract: A method is provided to enable a user to quickly identify related items in a list environment. A relationship icon is used to identify the presence of related items, such as email messages, occurring before and after a selected item. The relationship icon is used to navigate between the related items.

Abstract: A host device includes: a basic screen display processing section which selects either a main setting screen or a list display setting screen as a setting screen in accordance with user's input and then causing the selected setting screen to show; a scroll processing section which causes the main setting screen to sequentially display advanced function icons respectively representing a plurality of available advanced functions in performing a print processing; and a list screen processing section which causes the list display setting screen to display a list of at least part of the advanced function icons. Thus, it is possible to cause the setting screens enhanced in convenience to show for different users in varying learning levels.

Abstract: A system, method and computer program product for planning an arrangement of beverage equipment on a virtual surface or counter. The system allows a user to create a virtual surface of chosen dimension (32) and then select one or more beverage machines (36) to place on that surface while verifying that there is sufficient open space for the selected beverage machine (38). Also disclosed is a method of determining projected profit (48) based on the selection of beverage machines, entered values related to costs, and entered values related to serving size and pricing. The system reports on projected profits and/or how long the equipment needs to be operated to pay off the equipment's cost.

Abstract: A contextual pop-up menu of frequently used commands is displayed by an application whenever a user carries out a particular action. The contextual menu appears at the location of a cursor, so that the displayed commands are spatially very close to an item on which an action is to be performed. The commands which are displayed in the contextual menu are not limited to those provided by an application associated with the selected item. Other commands, such as system level commands, for help items or other types of user assistance features, can be added to the menu before it is displayed to the user. In addition, plug-in modules can be employed to provide other commands associated with the selected item.

Abstract: There are provided a screensaver displaying method and an information processing system in which characters arbitrarily selected or input by a user can be displayed with a simple operation during starting of a screensaver in the screensaver started at a time when an IC card or the like is pulled out. In the screensaver displaying method and the information processing system in which a computer is usable, while a user authentication device such as the IC card is set in a card reader and writer, and a screensaver screen is displayed and input into the computer cannot be performed, when the IC card or the like is pulled out and the user authentication device is not recognized, a control section of a processing device displays character contents set corresponding to a specific key in the screensaver screen of a display unit, when the specific key is pressed within a specific time after the IC card is pulled out.

Abstract: Information is visually presented to a computer user by receiving, in a computer system, a request to present a first visual item representing a first information portion selected from an information collection available in the computer system. It is determined, in response to the request: (i) which of several predefined categories the first information portion is associated with, and (ii) which of several predefined generality levels the first information portion has. A presentation that includes an area divided into segments extending between a center and a periphery of the area is generated on a display device. The segments correspond to the respective predefined categories and the area is concentrically divided into levels corresponding to the respective predefined generality levels. The first visual item is placed in one of the segments and at one of the levels according to its determined category and generality level. Item distribution effectively uses available space.

Abstract: The hotkey conflict avoidance program identifies a set of hotkeys in a first application and a second set of hotkeys in a simultaneously running second application, compares a first hotkey in the first set of hotkeys to a second hotkey in the second set of hotkeys and returns an error if the first hotkey conflicts with the second hotkey. Each hotkey in the first set of hotkeys is compared to each of the hotkeys in the second set of hotkeys. Other features of the hotkey conflict avoidance program include suggesting alternative hotkeys when a conflict is found and saving identified hotkeys and the corresponding actions to a persistent list. In a preferred embodiment, the first application is a screen reader for use by the visually impaired, and the simultaneously running second application is an application with which the screen reader interacts.

Abstract: A “Video Browser” provides an intuitive user interface for indexing, and interactive visual browsing, of particular elements within a video recording. In general, the Video Browser operates by first generating a set of one or more mosaic images from the video recording. In one embodiment, these mosaics are further clustered using an adjustable similarity threshold. User selection of a particular video mosaic then initiates a playback of corresponding video frames. However, in contrast to conventional mosaicking schemes which simply play back the set of frames used to construct the mosaic, the Video Browser provides a playback of only those individual frames within which a particular point selected within the image mosaic was observed. Consequently, user selection of a point in one of the image mosaics serves to provide a targeted playback of only those frames of interest, rather than playing back the entire image sequence used to generate the mosaic.

The method includes steps of displaying a first application window and a second application window on a display screen, declaring the first application window and the second application window as a group, the second application window being independent of and external to the first application window, grouping the first application window and the second window into a group, and displaying the group as a representation on the display screen. As new application windows are opened, they may be added to the group and/or they may become members of a second group of application windows. A user may switch between various groups.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling a computer device with a limited user-interface via a remote computer device having a more powerful user interface. Both computer devices are interconnected via a wireless communication channel and both computer devices support a common communications protocol. User-interface information is sent from the computer device with a limited user-interface to the remote computer device to provide a user-interface at the remote computer device for receiving user input at the remote computer device. The user input controls the computer device with a limited user-interface to execute commands therein corresponding to the user input.

Abstract: A development environment and/or method for generating a user interface for a plurality of computing devices. The development environment and/or method may include a user interface modeling process for configuring information representing display capabilities of computing devices. The display capabilities may include a desired screen size parameter. As a function of the information configured, indicators are displayed or implemented to represent the respective screen size parameters of the computing devices. The development environment and/or method may also include an application generation process for comparing the information of the display capabilities of the computing devices with the information indicating placement location of a user interface component. If the information indicating placement location of the user interface component complies with a display capability, then the user interface component is stored in a database.

Abstract: An editor application highlights a user's original selection of text. The editor application additionally identifies whether the user's selection of text includes a portion of tagged content. If so, the editor application provides a visual indication of a remainder portion of the tagged content that is not included as part of the user's selection of text. That is, the editor application provides a first visual indication (e.g., a first color of highlighting) of the original text selected by the user and a second visual indication (e.g., a second color of highlighting) of a portion of the tagged content displayed outside of originally selected text. Consequently, the user can easily identify a first region of text originally selected by the user as well as a remainder portion of the tagged content in a second region exclusive with respect to the originally selected text.

Abstract: Methods and systems for processing media content are described and in at least some embodiments utilize a composite or composition, which can be considered as a representation of an editing project as a single track. Editing projects can have one or more tracks, and each track can be associated with one or more data stream sources that can have effects or transitions applied on them. Compositions can be nested inside one another and provide an economical way for complex editing manipulations to take place.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and computer program products for making real-time communication user interfaces less intrusive by automatically adjusting the user interfaces based on the user's level of interaction. An initial representation of a user interface for real-time communication is displayed and automatically adapted to the user's activity level based on user input directed to the user interface. For example, the initial representation may be automatically adjusted, either reduced or enlarged, to an intermediate representation, a larger representation, or a smaller representation. When a representation is reduced, a message may be displayed to indicate the reduced representation's location. For smaller representations, subsequently received real-time messages may be displayed adjacent to the smaller representation, at least for a predetermined time. The initial representation may display in a desktop bar that displays other user interfaces, such as for a calendar, etc.

Abstract: A system, method, and medium for enhancing a GUI and viewing environment for a computer user is disclosed. Enabling a user to fully navigate and operate a computer through the use of a remote control device, the present invention includes at least a PC mode of operation and a theater mode of operation, wherein the theater mode is designed for distance use with the remote device. While operating in theater mode, received function key signals are interpreted by the computer system to operate various functions which have been modified to accommodate remote viewing and control. To enable the remote device to fully control the applications executable on the computer, the disclosed process notifies the various applications of the current operating mode.

Abstract: Regulating user interface controls includes receiving a user identifier, associating a grouping with the user identifier by selecting a grouping from among different groupings and automatically providing a set of user interface controls corresponding to the identified grouping, the set of user interface controls including a toolbar. The groupings can correspond to the maturity levels (e.g., kids and teenagers) of different network service provider users.
