  • Patent number: 4773286
Abstract: Striking tools, heads and handles for such tools, and methods of manufacturing them. A tool head according to this invention employs a flange which extends from each side of the head between the forward and rear portions of the head. The portion of the head within the periphery of each flange is generally concave and narrows to form a web extending longitudinally in the striking direction to connect the forward and rear portions. The web may include at least one opening communicating between the two concave surfaces. The flanges increase the cross-sectional area and moment of inertia of the head relative to the striking direction and relative to the handle axis. The resulting head enjoys greater strength and resistance to translational forces, bending moments, deformation and potential failure. Portions of the handle extending through the opening in the head and thereby about portions of the head reduce the possibility that the head will leave the handle as the tool is being swung.

  • Patent number: 4768582
Abstract: Slots are provided in the wrapper of a nuclear steam generator to increase the local flexibility of the wrapper to allow for the difference in thermal expansion between the carbon steel wrapper and the high corrosion resistant alloy tube support members. The radial structural load paths between the tube support members, the wrapper, and the outer shell provided by the radial support means, about which the expansion slots are provided, are not affected by the addition of the expansion slots. Since the slots are preferably provided by means of a high speed industrial laser, they are very thin and do not permit substantial commingling of cooler downcomer water and the boiling mixture in the tube bundle region. The expansion slots may be vertically or horizontally oriented and may be cut into the wrapper on more than one side of the radial support means. The slots may end in small curved portions to decrease stress concentrations and increase fatigue life.

  • Patent number: 4762031
Abstract: Improvements for ratchet wrenches which allows the socket to be turned without pivoting the handle. The improvements include a flat gear which either fits over the drive stud of the wrench's head and is sandwiched in between the head and a socket snapped on the head or is made integrally with the head. The gear projects beyond the socket and has driven gear teeth about its periphery. This allows for easy hand-turning. A shaft which has a means for turning at one end and a drive gear at the head end is provided. The shaft is mounted for both rotational and axial displacement and may slide from a home position in which the drive gear is free of the the flat gear to a position in which it meshes with that gear. A spring mechanically biases the shaft to its home position. A user may easily push the shaft to its operational position and, while maintaining it there, turn the shaft to turn the flat gear and thus the stud and socket. Upon releasing, the shaft automatically returns to its home position.
