  • Patent number: 9082309
Abstract: Embodiments can dynamically generate questions useful for student evaluation. One embodiment of a method may include providing a user interface on a client device for a user to compose a dynamic question template (DQT) in a first representation. The DQT which may have a question, question variables, a correct answer, and question constraints may be received by a system running on one or more server machines. The system may compile the DQT and generate and store a DQT object in an object library. The system can then pre-generate or dynamically generate in real time a plurality of unique question variants using the DQT object and without further input from the user. In generating the unique question variants, the system may obtain values, as constrained by the question constraints, for the question variants and/or run simulations using other objects such as equations from the object library or libraries.

  • Patent number: 9031493
Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for correlating an electronic book with a narration. A correlation is determined between a first portion of the narration and a first segment of the text within the electronic book. The correlation is stored as instructions to present the first segment of the text with emphasis simultaneously with playback of the first the portion of the narration. A determination is made that a second portion of the audio recording, immediately following the first portion, does not match a second segment of the text that immediately follows the first segment. A correlation between the second portion and a component of the electronic book is determined and stored as instructions to present the component with emphasis simultaneously with playback of the second portion of the narration.

  • Patent number: 8974286
Abstract: A device and method of operating a device to modify the rate of behavior of a user and a method of operating the device which may be a gaming device. The gaming device comprises a display, an input device, a timer and a processor circuit in communication with the display, the input device and the timer. The processor circuit calculates a rate of inputs from the input device and compares the rate of inputs against a predetermined threshold and determines a game result utilizing a variable interval schedule of reinforcement when the rate is above a predetermined threshold and causes the display to display a game result to the user. The method comprises receiving a plurality of inputs from the user at a user input device, calculating a rate of input from the plurality of inputs, determining a result from the inputs utilizing a combined differential reinforcement of high rate schedule of reinforcement and a variable interval schedule of reinforcement and providing the result to the user.

  • Patent number: 8934832
Abstract: A system and method for developing a course requires a plurality of participants that collaborate over a network, for example, a social network. A database stores an initial framework that defines a sequence of learning units for creating a desired learning environment for students, those learning units made of specifically ordered content objects. The learning units are identified by corresponding learning unit identifiers. A plurality of workstations coupled to the network are used for entry of reviewer information by the participants using the learning environment created for the students. The reviewer information comprise one or more comments entered by one participant about a learning unit or content object and a rank entered by anther participant about the comment, with the rank being correlated with a defined ranking standard. A processor processes the rank according to a predefined criteria to produce a ranking result that is associated with a learning unit identifier.

  • Patent number: 8834175
Abstract: A training portal facilitates an agent's management of training courses, including reviewing a training goal, indicating training courses available for the agent to download, downloading a specified training course to the agent, and receiving uploaded test results associated with a previously downloaded training course. The training portal may cooperate with an e-learning system for identifying downloadable courses, and may cooperate with a content delivery system for receiving the specified course which is to be downloaded to the agent. At a subsequent time, after the agent has interacted with a testing portion of the downloadable course, the agent may upload the test results to the portal. The training portal may be configured to receive test results uploaded within a certain time period. Once the training portal receives the test results, it provides the test results to the content delivery source. The content delivery source may then update the e-learning system.

  • Patent number: 8827713
Abstract: The present invention measures reading fluency, which is simultaneous decoding and comprehension. Whether or not a person is a fluent reader is determined by the size of the visual unit, or sting of letters, used in word recognition. In order to measure the size of the visual unit used in word recognition, a lexical decision task (“LDT”) is used in which short and long words are presented on a display device. The person determines if the string of letters formulates a word. The person enters their response on an input device and the results are recorded. A score is calculated that measures reading fluency. The ability to correctly identify a string of letters as a word using holistic processing, rather than letter-by-letter, is the hallmark of a fluent person.

  • Patent number: 8774704
Abstract: A system, method, and computer-readable medium are disclosed for the automated processing and scoring of applications. Application reader resources are selected to read and score individual categories of the application. The difference between the respective reader scores and an average delta value for each category of each application that the selected readers have previously score is calculated. The standard deviation of the average delta value for each category is calculated. If the selected reader's score for that category is not within one standard deviation of the average delta value, then the selected reader's score is adjusted the least amount necessary to be so. An additional application reader is selected to read and score the application. Reading and scoring operations are continued until at least two reader scores are within one standard deviation of the average of the adjusted scores. Final scoring of all applications is performed and the scored applications are ranked in descending order.
