    Abstract: Modified starches useful for emulsifying industrial products, especially foods and beverages containing flavor oils, are prepared by enzymatic degradation of the 1,4-alpha-D-glucosidic linkages from the non-reducing ends of a starch molecule, preferably employing beta-amylase, which may be carried out before or after the preparation of a starch derivative containing a hydrophobic group or both hydrophilic and hydrophobic substituent groups. The enzymatic degradation provides a starch emulsifier whose emulsions are characterized by improved shelf stability, which emulsifier may be used as a replacement for gum arabic and in other industrial applications.

    Abstract: N-acetyl-para-aminophenol is prepared by subjecting 4-hydroxyacetophenone oxime to a Beckmann rearrangement in the presence of a thionyl chloride catalyst and an alkyl alkanoate as the reaction solvent. An integrated process is disclosed wherein 4-hydroxyacetophenone is reacted with a hydroxyl amine salt and a base to obtain the ketoxime of the ketone, e.g., 4-hydroxyacetophenone oxime, extracting the ketoxime product from the reaction with alkanoate ester and subjecting the ketoxime dissolved in the ester to a Beckmann rearrangement in the presence of a thionyl chloride catalyst.

    Abstract: A pressure-sensitive medical sealant composition comprising (a) a crosslinked, swellable polymeric matrix made from an N-vinyl lactam monomer and a multi-ethylenically unsaturated compound, wherein the ethylenic groups are vinyl groups, allyl groups or methallyl groups, which groups are bonded to nitrogen or oxygen atoms; (b) a plasticizer; and (c) an antimicrobial. The medical sealant is highly moisture vapor transmissive and is capable of incorporating large concentrations of iodine. The composition can be used in a variety of medical applications including as a teat plug, a wound or burn dressing, or as a sealant to seal junctions between medical instruments penetrating the skin and the skin. A method of preparing the medical sealant composition in a caulkable form is also disclosed.

    Abstract: The binder serves to produce foundry moulds and comprises a solution (preferably an aqueous solution) of aldehyde reactive phenol substances and gaseous acetals (preferably dimethyl formal) as reaction partners and strong acids, e.g. sulphuric acid and sulphonic acids as a catalyst. The acetal is in this system hydrolysed by the acid, the basic aldehyde being formed, which will react with the aldehyde reactive phenol substance accompanied by cross-linking. The acid serves thereby simultaneously as a cross-linking catalyst. In principle, it is possible to regard as "aldehyde reactive phenol substances" any phenolic compounds which can in the acid range cross-link more or less spontaneously with aldehydes.     Abstract: A method is disclosed for the reduction of the extractability of trialkanolamines from polyolefins containing such compounds e.g. as a result of the use of trialkanolamines as catalyst deactivators in processes for the polymerization of olefins. Zinc oxide and/or zeolite molecular sieves are incorporated into the polyolefin, either during the process for the manufacture of the polyolefin or subsequent to such manufacture. Zinc oxide may be used in amount of 0.01-4 parts by weight and zeolite molecular sieves in amounts of 0.05-1 parts by weight, per 100 parts of polyolefin. The resultant compositions may be more acceptable for use in the fabrication of articles intended for the packaging of e.g. foodstuffs.
