Patent number: 4304154Abstract: A continuously variable transmission mechanism incorporating co-axial spaced input and output rollers between which a variable ratio driving connection is established by discs which have flat faces engaged with the peripheries of the rollers. Axial movement of the assembly of discs varies their effective diameter and thus the drive ratio. A planetary gear set has one element rotatable with the input roller, a second element rotatable with the output roller and its third element constituted by a carrier and a planet gear connected to an output shaft. The engagement load between the rollers and discs is controlled in response to the torque being transmitted. The transmission provides a range of transmission ratios in a forward and reverse direction.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 1979Date of Patent: December 8, 1981Assignee: GKN Group Services LimitedInventor: Gordon H. Patent number: 4304322Abstract: The invention comprises a wear-compensating device for incorporation in a control linkage used for operating a motor vehicle clutch. The control linkage is arranged between the declutching fork and the clutch pedal and the device comprises two coupling parts, each of which is linked respectively to two successive sections of the linkage.According to the invention, the outermost coupling part carries a sleeve divided into jaws so that it can pass elastically from a free configuration of disengagement, at which the jaws are at a distance from the innermost coupling part, to an enforced configuration of engagement, at which the jaws are clamped to the latter. The device compensates for wear of the clutch friction surfaces by changing the effective length of the control linkage.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 1979Date of Patent: December 8, 1981Assignee: Societe Anonyme Francaise du FerodoInventor: Carlo Beccaris

Patent number: 4302985Abstract: A valve timing device for an internal combustion engine includes a hub with an internal helical groove which engages a tracking post extending from a cylindrical surface of a crankshaft. A locking cap is placed at the outer end of the crankshaft spaced apart from the hub with a compression spring wrapped about the crankshaft between the hub and the locking cap. A sprocket is keyed onto the hub and trained about a chain which is drivingly trained about a conventional camshaft. As the crankshaft speed is increased, inertial loads of the camshaft causes the sprocket and hub to rotate relative to the crankshaft which axially moves the hub a predetermined amount along the crankshaft to compress the spring until the resilient forces of the spring counterbalances the inertia forces of the camshaft. As the hub is angularly positioned, the camshaft becomes angularly retarded relative to the crankshaft such that the valve operation is delayed with respect to the piston operation as the engine speed increases.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 1979Date of Patent: December 1, 1981Assignee: Ford Motor CompanyInventor: Robert J. Natkin

Patent number: 4299133Abstract: A gearing has on its driving shaft a drive means carrier member carrying drive means in the form of pins protruding towards a driven means carrier member fixed to the driven shaft and carrying divergently arranged driven means. The driven shaft is offset relative to the driving shaft so that the circular orbital path of movement of the driven means surrounds the circular orbital path of movement of the driven means. From the drive means always only one single drive means contacts a driven means and only in a portion of the orbital path thereof which portion is more remote from the axis of the driven shaft than that portion of this orbital path arranged nearer to the driven shaft. In the other portions of their orbital path, the drive means pass within the orbital path of the driven means but do not contact these. This results in an increased torque of the driven shaft.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 1979Date of Patent: November 10, 1981Inventor: Werner Schuler

Patent number: 4299583Abstract: A hydraulic tensioning device for maintaining a predetermined amount of tensioning force on an endless drive belt of a vehicle accessories drive system. A housing is mounted in a fixed position on the engine in close proximity to the drive belt. A shaft is movably mounted within the housing by an elastomer block which biases the shaft in a belt tensioning rotational direction. A lever extends outwardly from the housing and is integrally connected to the shaft for pivotal movement upon rotation of the shaft. An expandable bladder or actuator is mounted in the housing and is engageable with the shaft and pivots the rotor and lever toward a belt tensioning direction when the bladder is expanded by hydraulic fluid. A hydraulic fluid supply and pump assembly supplies fluid under pressure to inflate the bladder. An idler pulley drivingly engages the fluid pump and is driven by the endless drive belt for actuating the pump.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 1979Date of Patent: November 10, 1981Assignee: Dyneer CorporationInventors: Derald H. Patent number: 4299319Abstract: A two-speed clutch in which an input rotary drive is transmitted to an output rotary member to produce a high speed direct drive in which the output rotary member is driven at the same speed as the input member, or to produce a reduced output speed. The input member comprises an inner drum driven by centrifugally actuated clutch shoes in turn driven by an input shaft. A second set of clutch shoes is interposed between the inner drum and the output member consisting of an outer drum, which clutch shoes are designed to be centrifugally disengaged to produce a controlled slip between the inner and outer drums to reduce the output speed. In the high speed mode, the inner and outer drums are latched together to rotate at the same speed by a pivotally mounted latch mounted on the outer drum and an expanding spring element mounted to the inner drum, with engagement between the latch and expanding spring taking place at a predetermined rate of rotation of the inner drum to establish high speed drive.Type: GrantFiled: September 4, 1979Date of Patent: November 10, 1981Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventor: John Bochan
