  • Patent number: 4647749
Abstract: Apparatus and method for depositing a corrosion resistant weld clad material upon a cylindrical surface of a workpiece such as the internal cylindrical conduit of a valve body (10). The apparatus includes a turntable (12) having a rotating platform (24) which is adapted for supporting the valve body for rotation about the cylindrical axis of its internal conduit (14). The platform (24) can be tilted from a horizontal position through to a vertical position such that the central axis of the valve body conduit connected thereto can be angled between 30 and 60 degrees. A wire-fed, gas-shielded welding torch (16) is supported adjacent to the cylindrical surface of the conduit (14) to be coated such that as the valve body (10) is rotated by the turntable (12), weld material (82) is deposited circumferentially about the surface of the conduit.

  • Patent number: 4645893
Abstract: In the manufacture of spiral-welded steel pipe, material strip or plate is fed in its longitudinal direction and continuously formed into spiral pipe form. One side-edge of the strip and the other side-edge of the strip that has already been spirally formed are welded together by the electric-resistance method where they meet. The edges of the strip and formed pipe are held together simultaneously with or immediately after the electric-resistance welding from both inside and outside the pipe using a pair of pressure rolls. The bead formed as a result of the electric-resistance welding is reformed simultaneously with or immediately after the holding by the pressure rolls is accomplished. Then, the electric-resistance welded side-ends are welded again by the arc method.

  • Patent number: 4645897
Abstract: A rail alignment device and a shear head are suspended from a trolley running over a rail welding machine. The alignment device comprises structure forming a downwardly-opening bight and carrying locating stops, clamping cylinders and transducers with sensing plungers all of which project into the bight. The rail ends to be butt-welded are received within the bight for alignment. One of the rails is clamped against the stops by the cylinders. The location of the other rail relative to the structure is sensed by the transducers and the machine clamps are adjusted until those transducers indicate alignment of the rails. The device is then removed and stored remote from the gap, with the shear head, during welding. The shear head comprises a horseshoe-shaped back plate which carries three cutting tools. An arm, which is pivotally mounted on one of the ends of the back plate and adapted to be latched to the other end to close the bight of the back plate, carries a fourth cutting tool.

  • Patent number: 4645896
Abstract: A method and apparatus for flash welding are disclosed wherein a first predetermined voltage is applied between a pair of workpieces to be welded to generate flashes therebetween, and a second predetermined voltage lower than the first predetermined voltage is then applied between the workpieces to maintain fine flashes when the temperature of weld surfaces of the workpieces has reached a predetermined temperature. The workpieces are upset when the total number of flashes has reached a predetermined value. The pressure welding is maintained with an upsetting pressure sufficient to upset the workpieces and slightly higher than a pressure at which the workpieces are deformed near their recrystallization temperature until the temperature of weld surfaces has decreased to lower than the recrystallization temperature. The applied voltage and the upsetting pressure are controlled in accordance with the weld progress.

  • Patent number: 4645898
Abstract: Method and apparatus for joining two elongated members, such as rails, together by holding the rail ends in fixed relationship respective to one another while ramming powder metal between the confronting ends of the rails. Current flow occurs across the confronting faces of the rail and across the compacted powder, thereby elevating the temperature of the marginal rail ends and the compacted metal powder. The rams forge the hot metal powder and hot rail ends into a continuous mass. The method and apparatus can be used for building railroads, repairing defective rail lengths, and welding other elongated members together.

  • Patent number: 4639574
Abstract: A welding gun of an arc welding machine is mounted for vertical reciprocal movement on a movable frame portion. The movable frame portion is connected to a stationary frame portion by piston cylinder assemblies which upon actuation raise and lower the movable frame portion into an out of position for locating the welding gun in position for welding together a pair of longitudinal sheet metal member edges positioned in a preselected relationship on the stationary frame portion. A pair of clamp plates are carried by the movable frame portion. When the movable frame portion is lowered the clamp plates are positioned oppositely of the pair of sheet member edges respectively to move into and out of clamping engagement with the sheet member edges. Once the sheet member edges are clamped in abutting relationship, the welding gun is advanced downwardly on the frame movable portion in a vertical linear path.

  • Patent number: 4625091
Abstract: The cover and case of fusible material forming the enclosure for a semiconductor chip are provided with a hermetically sealed joint in the form of a "stitch" weld along the marginal edge of the cover by multiple impulse, overlapped spot welding, with the heat of the welding current confined to a zone spanning the distance between a pair of pressure-imparting electrodes and transmitted transversely of the side wall of the case, thereby avoiding heat transfer across the case with consequent damage to the circuitry, electrical devices, semiconductor material and other contents of the case. A special carrier provides a mount for the case and, through use of a template on the carrier and a drive associated with the template, the case and cover are advanced or indexed in small increments after each resistance weld cycle, relocating the package in readiness for the next succeeding welding step.
