  • Patent number: 5143632
Abstract: A polysiloxane polymer having pendant aromatic groups that is useful in increasing the viscosity of carbon dioxide. That polymer can be formed by reacting a polysiloxane containing at least one olefinic group with a phenyldialkylsilane. That polymer can be used in a method for recovering oil from an underground oil-bearing earth formation penetrated by an injection well and a producing well, in which method carbon dioxide is injected into the formation to displace oil towards the producing well from which oil is produced to the surface. The viscosity of the carbon dioxide injected into the formatin is increased at least three-fold by the presence of a sufficient amount of the polymer and a sufficient amount of a cosolvent to form a solution of the polymer in the carbon dioxide.

  • Patent number: 5141655
Abstract: A method for the inhibition of scale deposition on the surfaces of a well coproducing oil and scale forming brines comprising injecting into the well reservoir an acidic aqueous solution at a first pH containing dissolved therein a scale inhibitor, multivalent metal ions, and a heat sensitive pH increasing substance which decomposes at elevated temperatures liberating an alkaline compound such that the solution is inherently heated by the higher ambient reservoir temperature to a temperature at which the alkaline compound is liberated from the heat sensitive substance thus raising the pH of the solution to a point at which a sparingly soluble multivalent metal salt of the scale inhibitor is phase separated from the solution on the porous surfaces of the reservoir rock formation, providing for a slow release of inhibitor into the produced brines when the well is in its production phase.

  • Patent number: 5134118
Abstract: This invention relates to an improved aqueous based drilling fluid and specifically to a water soluble polymer that imparts desirable performance characteristics to the final drilling fluid. The invention also relates to the method for preparation of the polymer and drilling fluid. The water soluble polymer is especially useful in that it exhibits superior tolerance to divalent cations, salts, solids and elevated temperatures when added to aqueous drilling fluids. The polymer additive is characterized by increased viscosity at low shear rates and improved fluid loss control thereby exhibiting superior rheological and thixotropic properties. The polymer consists of reaction products of sulfonated monomers and monomers added to enhance the functional characteristics of the polymer.

  • Patent number: 5124312
Abstract: The present invention relates to drilling fluid additives, more particularly to superior drilling fluid thinners or polyfunctional drilling fluid conditioners, and methods of their preparation. The thinners comprise chelates and complexes prepared by reaction of sulfonitrohumic acid and sulfolignin with compounds of elements of Groups IVB and VIII of the periodic table, and especially titanium zirconium iron sulfolignin sulfonitrohumates, as well as mixture formed in the reaction. These chelates are stable, and are readily binded with clay and have a good heat resistance. The thinners of the present invention can remarkably reduce viscosity, yield point, gel strength and water loss of well-drilling fluids, and have a high salts and calcium resistivity, and can be widely used in extracting and exploiting petroleum, natural gas, geothermal fluids and underground water.
