Patent number: 3947180Abstract: A method and apparatus for combined injection moulding and blow forming of containers or objects of plastics material. A preform is formed on a mandrel by injection moulding. The mandrel with the preform is transferred from the injection mould to a blow forming mould and the preform is blow formed to the final product. It is characteristic of the invention that the preforms are formed in the injection mould and extracted from the injection mould at a higher rate than their forming in the blow forming mould, two or more preforms being simultaneously blow formed in two or more blow forming moulds. This arrangement has the advantage of providing complete independence of the two production cycles. The apparatus includes a conveyor for the mandrels carrying the preforms, this conveyor extending from an injection mould to a blow forming mould.Type: GrantFiled: August 15, 1973Date of Patent: March 30, 1976Assignee: Van Leer Verpackungen GmbHInventor: Robert Neumaier

Patent number: 3946796Abstract: In foundry core-making or mold-making apparatus employing a rotary mixer working in a chamber and mixing together a sand-resin mix and a sand-catalyst mix to produce a cold quick-setting mixture that is then quickly discharged through the bottom of the chamber into a core-blower or molding machine, the chamber is fixed and has two separately movable sliding shutters controlling openings in its floor (it may be one long opening), one shutter controlling discharge into the blower or molding machine and the other controlling discharge of any residue to a waste chute. Preferably the first shutter uncovers a peripheral portion of the floor first, the discharge area thus growing from the periphery in a radial inward direction.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 1974Date of Patent: March 30, 1976Assignee: British Cast Iron Research AssociationInventor: William McCormack

Patent number: 3945786Abstract: A molding system for producing articles of mottled appearance includes a plasticizing unit having an inner bore which communicates with a mold cavity. A feed screw is mounted within the bore and is connected to fluid-actuated motors for rotary and translational movement within the bore. A spreader device is positioned in a heated part of the bore ahead of the feed screw. The screw is rotated to feed and soften molding materials of diverse coloration and is subsequently translated to push the materials through the spreader device such that final plasticization occurs. A bridging conduit is provided between the rotary and translational motors to divert a controlled amount of fluid from the latter to the former during a pushing operation, to rotate the screw forwardly at a controlled rate or to hold pressure on the screw to prevent backward rotation or to limit the amount of backward rotation.Type: GrantFiled: July 25, 1973Date of Patent: March 23, 1976Assignee: Koehring CompanyInventor: Thomas G. Patent number: 3945781Abstract: Continuous production of a molded three-dimensional product employs an indexing rotatable drum having along its periphery a plurality of mold cavities into which molten thermoplastic material is introduced, and a web of material permeable to the molten thermoplastic material and which is guided along the drum periphery. In one embodiment the thermoplastic material enters the cavities through the web to which the thermoplastic is subsequently bonded. The thermoplastic material in the cavities is then shaped and cooled before it is removed from the cavities by dissociating the web from the drum periphery. In a second embodiment the molten thermoplastic material is introduced into the cavities before the web is associated onto the drum periphery. After cooling the thermoplastic to bond it to the web, the web is dissociated from the drum and removes the molded thermoplastic from the cavities.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 1972Date of Patent: March 23, 1976Inventor: Jack Doleman

Patent number: 3941539Abstract: Injection blow molding equipment for the production of hollow articles wherein cores are axially inserted in blow molds and blank molds is disclosed. Compact core assemblies and fluid supply systems integral with the platens allow the mold parts to be mounted on the surfaces of opposed, relatively movable platens. Partible neck rings associated with each core open divergently outwardly as the blow mold and core separate, to shorten machine cycle time. A manifold, supplied with cooling fluid from the periphery of a core mounting plate, distributes heat transfer fluid to the core assemblies for cooling the neck rings. In one embodiment, mating blow mold sections are mounted on contra-oscillatable mounting members and are opened and closed by arcuate movement of the mounting members.Type: GrantFiled: December 5, 1972Date of Patent: March 2, 1976Assignee: Continental Can Company, Inc.Inventors: Robert W. Patent number: 3940225Abstract: An improved apparatus for forming blow molded articles of enhanced physical characteristics by orienting the material during the formation of the article. A two-stage blowing operation is provided wherein a pre-form blow mold effects a uniform and controllable transfer of heat from a freely extruded tube. The pre-form is conditioned, both thermally and dimensionally, within the pre-form for most effective orientation during a subsequent final blowing operation. Manipulatively, the disclosed method provides a completely overlapped pre-blowing and final blowing operation, and more than one set of pre-blow and final blow molds may be utilized at a single extruder orifice, if desired. Further, the direction and extent of movement of the molds adapts the apparatus to presently existing blow molding machines, while increasing the machine output. Successively utilized blow tubes form and reform the open or blowing end of the tube to a final configuration.Type: GrantFiled: January 13, 1975Date of Patent: February 24, 1976Assignee: Owens-Illinois, Inc.Inventor: Albert R. Patent number: 3940223Abstract: This invention reduces the time that a core rod must remain at an injection station of a plastic blow molding machine. The injection operation is usually performed by a plasticizer, and while the injection operation itself requires very little time, the plasticizer performs other roles that must be complete before the next injection. This invention uses two plasticizers alternately so that one can inject while the other recovers for its next injection operation. A plastic pump is used to relieve the plasticizers of some of the operations that they previously performed.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 1973Date of Patent: February 24, 1976Assignee: Farrell Patent CompanyInventor: John J. Patent number: 3937610Abstract: This invention decreases the time required to cool a plastic article, in a blow molding cavity, by circulating a mist in the inside of the blown article. Globules of liquid in the mist contact with the inside surface of the blown article. Preferably this liquid evaporates and removes its latent heat evaporization from the plastic surface. This removes more heat per unit of time than is removed with a breeze of dry air flowing in the blown article. The article is cooled so that it is stiff enough to remove sooner from the blow mold. The mist can be followed by dry air to remove any lingering liquid from a blown container.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 1973Date of Patent: February 10, 1976Assignee: Farrell Patent CompanyInventor: John J. Patent number: 3934788Abstract: In order to weld a cup-shaped member to a ring, claws are secured to the exterior surfaces of each part. In addition, a resilient member such as a ductile aluminum plate is placed between each pair of claws. The parts are spaced apart to form a gap in which a welding seam can be made. During cooling, the welding seam shrinks. This causes the aluminum plates between the claws to plastically deform. Thereafter, the claws and plates can be removed and the finished welding carried out.Type: GrantFiled: January 17, 1974Date of Patent: January 27, 1976Assignee: Sulzer Brothers LimitedInventor: Herbert Ammann
