  • Patent number: 3982877
Abstract: Apparatus is disclosed for making a hollow, rib-reinforced article from a composite preform of two thermoplastic sheets. One sheet has a pattern of ridges or grooves, on a surface which contacts the other sheet, to permit the free flow of fluid from a marginal edge to interior regions of the preform. The apparatus includes (1) a heater, (2) mold platens which include a rib-forming mold cavity, (3) a ram to close and hold the mold platen in contact with the composite preform, and (4) a manifold which supplies a pressurized fluid to a marginal edge of the preform, thereby distending the thermoplastic sheet into the mold cavity. Then, the ram is further closed to seal nondistended areas of the preform, forming a hollow, laminated article.

  • Patent number: 3982862
Abstract: A two-part histologic tissue processing and embedding structure comprises an open-ended base pan and a perforated top member. For processing, the base pan and top may be sna-fitted together to form a compact housing for holding and transporting the tissue specimens through the various processing liquids. For embedding, the top is inverted so that the top and base pan may be loosely seated together as a mold for receiving paraffin which solidifies to embed the tissue specimen. For slicing, the base pan is used as a microtome clamp aligning device and is then removed and the top serves a mounting device for mounting the embedded specimen in a microtome clamp during slicing, and for storage the base pan may be secured back onto the top and placed over the remaining unsliced embedded specimen for protection.

  • Patent number: 3981668
Abstract: This injection blow molding machine has special provision for maintaining the plastic of a parison on a core rod at the orientation temperature of the plastic; and stretching the plastic of the parison lengthwise of the core rod for orientation in the direction of one axis without any substantial increase in the diameter of the parison. After this orientation in one axis, the temperature is controlled to maintain an orientation temperature, and the plastic of the parison is then blown to a larger diameter so as to obtain orientation in another axis for bi-axial orientation. The core rod is covered by an elastic balloon, and provision is made for obtaining flow of the plastic on the core rod lengthwise of the rod during the first orientation operation.

Abstract: Apparatus is disclosed for injection molding a partitioned container having four sidewalls, an open top and a closed bottom. Thermoplastic material from a primary sprue flows through a runner system to inlet gates disposed to open into the mold cavity in a generally common plane lying at about the open top of the container to be molded and along opposed container sidewalls intermediate adjacent partition walls. Two mold structures are disclosed. A preferred mold comprises four block members defining, in a closed position, a hollow cavity corresponding to the exterior container dimensions but movable outwardly to an open position. A plurality of spaced core members are movable into and out of the hollow cavity to, respectively, define the container mold and permit ejection of the molded container therefrom. Other apparatus features are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 3975129
Abstract: Apparatus for making flexible corrugated tubing of relatively large diameter and wall thickness from an extruded sleeve of uncured vulcanizable stock. The sleeve is placed on a cylindrical forming mandrel and radially expanded into an axially extensible and compressible forming member having interior edges that define successive convolutions coaxial with the mandrel and which form creases in the sleeve when it is radially expanded. The mandrel is supported at its opposite ends by two spaced forming head assemblies that surround the ends of the sleeve and which also engage the opposite ends of the forming member. When the sleeve is radially expanded to form bulges between the interior edges, the forming head assemblies are simultaneously moved in an axial direction toward one another by power means to compress the forming member and sleeve and thus, to produce embryonic corrugations in the sleeve.

  • Patent number: 3974872
Abstract: In a system for the production of molds for casting, a pair of pattern plates are disposed in an opposed facing relationship with a frame located therebetween in a manner whereby the opposing pattern surfaces of the plates, together with the frame, define an enclosed cavity within which a casting mold section may be formed. The frame is preferably provided with an opening through which the cavity may be filled with molding material which, after hardening, forms a mold section. After separation of the pattern plates and frame, the mold section is conveyed into assembled relationship with one or more other mold sections in order to form a mold for casting. Pattern plates and frames may be arranged in a mass production facility to continuously form mold sections which, when assembled, will provide a mold stack for producing multiple castings.

  • Patent number: 3965963
Abstract: In the manufacture of hollow turbine blades or vanes especially those having a columnar crystalline growth in the alloy, the blade is cast in two opposed halves against a central mold element, the latter being rigid enough to avoid deformation during heating of the mold prior to pouring and during solidification. This central element has on opposite surfaces the configurations of the inner surfaces of the hollow blade. Cooperating with this inner element are outer elements having cooperating inner surface configurations of the convex and concave sides of the blade respectively. After the blade halves are cast simultaneously in the assembled mold and removed therefrom they are bonded together to form a complete blade.
