  • Patent number: 5054453
Abstract: A method and on board apparatus to recycle gasoline vapor emissions from the head space of a motor vehicle gasoline tank during refueling and operation of the vehicle. The apparatus comprises a canister to collect and store gasoline vapor from the head space and a vapor fan and sparger combination to retrieve vapor driven from the canister during a heating cycle and to dissolve the vapor in the liquid gasoline in the tank. The canister includes an adsorbent to separate the vapor from air and a vent valve to release air from the canister. Inside the canister is a ceramic heater, a temperature sensor and an adsorbed vapor sensor. A water drain permits condensed moisture to be released from the canister. The sparger comprises a microscopically porous body having a plurality of relatively large blind passages therein, the sparger body being entirely immersed in the liquid gasoline.

  • Patent number: 5054454
Abstract: A control system and method for an internal combustion engine and receiving inducted fuel vapors from a fuel vapor recovery system. An electronically actuated solenoid valve coupled to the fuel vapor recovery system regulates rate of vapor flow in response to the duty cycle of a desired rate of vapor flow command. The pressure differential across the valve is regulated to achieve substantially sonic vapor flow such that vapor flow is independent of engine manifold pressure fluctuations and linearly proportional to the duty cycle of the desired vapor flow command. An air/fuel ratio feedback control system is thereby able to maintain a desired air/fuel ratio during changes in inducted airflow.

  • Patent number: 5054455
Abstract: The evaporative emission control system for an internal combustion engine purges the vapor collection canister to the throttle body through both a purge regulator controlled by the engine ECU and a variable orifice valve that is mechanically operated by the throttle mechanism. A throttle position sensor that supplies a throttle position signal to the ECU can be read by the ECU as also representing the degree of restriction being imposed by the variable orifice on the flow of vapor from the canister to the throttle body and the ECU can take this into account when setting the purge regulator. A novel construction for the purge regulator, particularly the connection between the actuator and the valve, precludes the transmission of any significant bending moment from the movable wall of the actuator to the valve. The head of the valve is designed to also contribute to improved operation.

  • Patent number: 5054445
Abstract: The invention relates to a fuel injection system for self-ignition internal combustion engines. The noise reduction of Diesel engines requires new injection systems. According to the invention a pre-injection and a main injection is achieved by employing to injection lines of different lengths. The difference in length is selected such that the time difference of the pressure waves for travelling the respective lengths corresponds to the desired time delay between the pre-injection and the main injection. In order to account for the compressibility of the fuel both injection lines are maintained at a standing pressure. The hydraulic effect of the injection lines on each other is prevented by check valves and by-pass valves. The controlled injection significantly reduces the combustion noise.

  • Patent number: 5054456
Abstract: A fuel injection assembly for an engine comprises a fuel injector having an injector outlet and a nozzle having a nozzle passage with a nozzle inlet and outlet. The nozzle passage includes a converging portion adjacent the nozzle inlet and a diverging portion adjacent the nozzle outlet. The fuel injection assembly further comprises a nozzle support for attaching the nozzle to the fuel injector so that the injector outlet registers with the nozzle passage adjacent the nozzle inlet enabling injection of fuel from the fuel injector into the nozzle passage. The nozzle has a nozzle port adjacent the nozzle inlet enabling the establishment of an air flow which enters the nozzle passage adjacent the nozzle inlet and exits the nozzle passage through the nozzle outlet. At least a portion of the air flow in the nozzle passage is sonic enabling the fuel injected into the nozzle passage to mix with the sonic air flow and be carried by it through the nozzle passage and the nozzle outlet.

  • Patent number: 5050568
Abstract: The evaporative emission control system for an internal combustion engine purges the vapor collection canister to the intake manifold through a purge regulator controlled by the engine ECU. The purge regulator comprises a diaphragm valve and an electronic vacuum regulator. The purge regulator functions to allow a purge flow rate correlated with a control signal from the engine ECU and manifold vacuum, to maintain the purge flow rate substantially constant in response to certain changes in the magnitude of manifold vaccum, and to re-adjust the purge flow rate in correlation with changes in the control signal from the engine ECU.

  • Patent number: 5048488
Abstract: A method and apparatus reduces the amount of residual injection fluid within an injection pump. When an associated internal combustion engine is shut off, a stop valve in the injection pump is closed and an injection timing mechanism is shifted into an early position after a predetermined waiting time has expired. The length of the waiting time is selected in order to enable the injection fluid already supplied to the pump at the instant that the stop valve is closed, to enter the interior of the pump while the injection timing mechanism is in an existing working position.

  • Patent number: 5044344
Abstract: A fuel delivery system for an internal combustion engine that includes a fuel supply with a fuel pump responsive to application of electrical power for supplying fuel under pressure to fuel injectors mounted on the engine. A pressure sensor is coupled to the pump/injector fuel delivery line for measuring fuel delivery pressure. A second sensor is positioned within the fuel tank and is responsive to fuel alcohol concentration. The pump motor is energized by a pulsed d.c. signal having a duty cycle that varies as a combined function of the pressure and alcohol-concentration sensor output signals so as to maintain constant fuel pressure at the injectors while automatically compensating quantity of fuel delivered by the injectors for differing fuel alcohol concentrations.

  • Patent number: 5040511
Abstract: A fuel injection device of for internal combustion engines, particularly a unit fuel injector, having a pump piston preferably driven via a drive cam and having a free piston hydraulically driven by the pump piston, the free piston divides a pump chamber from a pressure chamber, from which a pressure line leads to an injection nozzle of the engine. Via a magnetic valve, the fuel to be injected is first metered into the pressure chamber during the intake stroke of the pump piston and subsequently, in the control stroke, an injection quantity determining the supply onset is metered into the pump chamber. The pump piston with spaced annular grooves serves as a reversal device. During the metering stroke, a maintenance pressure that is lower than the metering pressure of the fuel and is generated via a pressure control valve is maintained in the pump chamber.

  • Patent number: 5038741
Abstract: An in-tank fuel module adapted to be mounted within a fuel tank of predetermined vertical dimension through a circular opening in an upper wall of the tank. The module includes a canister having a one-piece hollow cylindrical external wall of blow-molded plastic construction and of diameter to fit through the tank wall opening. Circumferential convolutions that extend around the wall form axially resilient bellows in the canister wall, and a fuel inlet is disposed at the lower portion of the canister. A cover is fastened to the upper edge of the canister, and is dimension to close the opening in the tank top wall with the canister extending vertically through the tank. The canister is axially dimensioned with respect to the vertical dimension of the tank so that the bellows in the canister sidewall are axially compressed and resiliently hold the lower portion of the canister against the bottom wall of the tank.
