  • Patent number: 6460054
Abstract: A system and method for updating file archive bits in a data storage arrangement that performs snapshot backup operations is provided. The snapshot container is a read-write container that can receive archive bit backup write data from the file system and associated file system. Snapshot container files in which archive bits have been cleared, indicating a backup, are checked. These files' counterparts in the snapshotted container are located. Where the snapshotted files have had archive bits cleared, they are passed over. Where snapshotted files have set archive bits, the file data parameters for respective snapshot and snapshotted files are compared. If the file data parameters therebetween are the same, then the respective snapshotted file archive bit is cleared confirming backup status. Where the file data parameters differ, the set archive bit for the snapshotted file is retained, indicating un-backed-up current version in the snapshotted container.

  • Patent number: 6438549
Abstract: A method for securing sparse access control list (ACL) data in a relational database used as a backing store for a hierarchical-based directory service. The sparse ACL data is secured in a plurality of tables. An owner table stores data objects with explicitly set ACLs. A propagation table stores data on whether individual ACLs are inherited by descendant objects. A permissions table stores data regarding permissions which a user may perform on an object. A source table stores data for a set of ancestor objects having respective ACLs for each of a set of descendant objects. Preferably, the tables are stored in the relational database together with the objects. For a given object, data in the tables is used to determine the given object's entry owner and ACL. The inventive technique has particular applicability in a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) directory service having a relational database as a backing store.

  • Patent number: 6424972
Abstract: A method and system for compressing and decompressing read only data in records that have a fixed size. A plurality of records are divided into segments having a predetermined size. For each segment, the records are arranged in a table with rows for each record and a column for each field in each record. The width of each column of repeated data is compressed to zero bits and the repeated data is referenced in a header of the segment. The width of each column of integer data is compressed to the minimum number of bits required to represent the largest integer value in the fields of the column. Floating point data in each column is converted to integer data and the width of the each column with converted integer data is set to the minimum width necessary to represent the largest converted integer in each column. The conversion to integer data is calculated for floating point and real numbers with a minimum precision exponent that is stored in the header for the segment.

  • Patent number: 6418431
Abstract: A language model is used in a speech recognition system which has access to a first, smaller data store and a second, larger data store. The language model is adapted by formulating an information retrieval query based on information contained in the first data store and querying the second data store. Information retrieved from the second data store is used in adapting the language model. Also, language models are used in retrieving information from the second data store. Language models are built based on information in the first data store, and based on information in the second data store. The perplexity of a document in the second data store is determined, given the first language model, and given the second language model. Relevancy of the document is determined based upon the first and second perplexities. Documents are retrieved which have a relevancy measure that exceeds a threshold level.

  • Patent number: 6408311
Abstract: In a computer system executing a repository program and having a memory, a method is disclosed for identifying UML objects in the repository with objects in an XML file. The method includes the steps of parsing the XML file into XML objects and building an object tree. Next, the object tree is traversed a first time, and for each XML object found that has a name, corresponding UML objects are identified. After this, the object tree is traversed a second time, and for each XML object found that does not have a name, corresponding UML objects are then identified through Compositions and References. The method for traversing said object tree a first time includes the steps of identifying a UML object type for each XML object, and when the XML object name matches the UML object name at the current level, a UML and XML object IDs are saved in a ‘Conversion’ object in the memory.
