  • Patent number: 6269379
Abstract: In an image filing system in accordance with the present invention, image files containing images that should be displayed on a viewing monitor in a conference unit are selected from among retrieved image files using a mouse. A CPU determines how many image files are selected using the mouse and identifies management information contained in the selected image files. Under the control of the CPU, images in a work memory are temporarily stored in an image processor. The images in the image processor are displayed on a retrieval monitor. Management information contained in the selected image files and the number of selected image files are supplied from the CPU to a controller over a bus. Reduced images provided in the form of digital data and contained in the selected image files in the image processor are supplied to a D/A converter under the control of the controller. The D/A converter de-quantizes the digital data into analog data so as to display the reduced images on the viewing monitor.

  • Patent number: 6263345
Abstract: The invention provides a mechanism for using statistics, in connection with various database query cost modeling techniques, to more accurately estimate the number of rows and UECs that will be produced by relational operators and predicates in database systems. The ability to accurately estimate the number of rows and UECs returned by a relational operator and/or a predicate is fundamental to computing the cost of a query execution plan. This, in turn, drives the optimizer's ability to select the query plan best suited for the desired performance goal. According to the present invention, histogram statistics are synthesized bottom up from the leaf nodes to the root node of a query tree.

  • Patent number: 6233584
Abstract: A technique for permitting a client in a client/server computing environment to query a plurality of databases for desired data utilizing a single query sent over a network one time. The single query need not be written in the syntax for the target database, but includes the names of the database and table within the database which contains the desired data. The query is sent from the client over the network via a specified socket, and is received by servers connected to the network which are listening to the specified socket. Each server includes code which determines if the desired data is present in a database which is associated therewith. If so, the server code generates an appropriate query for its associated database, retrieves the desired data from the database and forwards the data to the client over the network.

  • Patent number: 6230159
Abstract: An object-oriented interface is used to provide inheritance of object property information. A set of base object classes are created and stored in a persistent object state in non-volatile storage. A set of derived objects are then created using the base object classes and inherited base object property information. Derived object classes are saved in a persistent object state in non-volatile storage as a “delta” or difference between the derived object information and the inherited base object information. Saving only the derived class objects as a delta saves a significant amount of computer resources. When derived object is loaded, the base object class from which the derived object class inherited information is loaded first, then the derived object class delta is loaded. The two step loading process allows any changes made to the base object class to be automatically reflected in the derived object class by inheritance.
