Abstract: A control method for controlling the screwing down pressure provided in a reeling mill where the reels are controlled by a combination of signals continuously monitored by a computer. The signals include the temperature of the pipe entering the reeling mill, the voltage and current supplied to the reeling motor and the speed of the reeling motor. A calculation is then performed which gives the actual reduction of wall thickness based upon a predetermined relationship of the temperature of the pipe entering the reeling mill and the torque of the rolling motor. The torque is calculated based upon the speed, current and voltage of the rolling motor. The pressure supplied to the rolling reels is then altered based on this signal.
Abstract: The apparatus and method make possible the semi-continuous rolling of an extensive range of product widths from no more than three widths of slabs. The leading end of a slab is forged or upset laterally between dies tapered to reduce its width at said end gradually to a value less than the desired width at the end of the pass. The slab is then passed through grooved vertical edging rolls to reduce its width and into the rolls of a roughing stand. The edge rolling tends to move the overfilled metal into the void created by the dies. As the trailing end of the slab approaches the roughing stand the edging rolls are backed off, allowing that end of the slab to fan out laterally. As the slab leaves the roughing stand it is rolled between grooved vertical edging rolls to reduce spread and bring the fanned-out trailing end to size. That operation causes the trailing end to bulge rearwardly at its center, so compensating for fishtailing.
Abstract: An inlet table for a restrained mandrel mill includes a plurality of roll units arranged in the pass line direction and the roll units are mechanically swung in synchronism with the forward and backward movements of a mandrel bar, thereby supporting the mandrel bar and/or a shell to be rolled on the pass line and preventing the roll units from striking against a restrained bar for moving the mandrel bar.
Abstract: The method and apparatus permit a relatively long metal tubing stock to be finished to any desired tapered shape through a single-pass operation. The apparatus is provided in the form of a tandem configuration including any number of individual swaging units each having the identical construction including the same working parts and assemblies. The grooved roll arrangement associated with the tandem-configured swaging units is used as a preliminary step, and forms an initial metal tubing stock to a multiple-stepped shape.
Abstract: A duct finishing machine is provided and consists of a duct holding frame that engages and holds a duct in a proper position, a power head carriage that pivotally attaches and locks the duct on the duct holding frame and a power head that moves along the power head carriage traveling an entire length of the duct for sealing a formed lock seam of the duct by rolling a flange down tight.
Abstract: A process and an apparatus for the peeling of wire wound into a coil and/or to be wound into a coil in a wire peeling machine. The wire is peeled bent in the form of a loop, with the individual wire loops having a curvature corresponding essentially to the curvature of the wire in the coil and the wire loops being separated so that the wire is being guided on a helically curving path. At least in one location a piece of a wire loop is spaced apart from two adjacent pieces of the adjacent loops so that a peeling head peeling a first loop piece may be accommodated between the two other loop pieces. In particular, the wire is guided helically on the circumferential surface of a partial annular torus or a cylinder. The wire may be peeled directly, i.e., without prior straightening. The axis of rotation of the peeling head is perpendicular to the plane formed by the curved axis of the coil, which also contains the axes of the disk or disks. The axis of rotation of the peeling head is horizontal.
Abstract: A hot-rolling plant comprises forward and rear reversible coilers, a reversible finishing stand disposed between the coilers, and crop shears including upper and lower cutter cylinders. To permit trimming of the stock to be rolled between finishing passes, the crop shears are disposed between the finishing stand and the rear reversible coiler, and a backing roller for supporting the stock is rotatably mounted on the lower cutter cylinder on an axis which is parallel to the axis of rotation of the lower cutter cylinder.
Abstract: The apparatus and method for folding a sheet or signature wherein the sheet or signature is passed edgewise along an arcuate path, a portion of the sheet or signature intermediate the leading and trailing edges thereof is gripped and withdrawn from the first arcuate path to a tangential second arcuate path, and a fluid or air stream is directed counter to and away from the second path to smoothly guide and gently fold the leading edge back upon the trailing edge.
Abstract: This invention provides an apparatus for quarter folding sheet products such as newspapers and the like, which includes a pair of cooperating fold rolls, a sheet supporting surface above the fold rolls, a rotatable cage assembly carrying a tucker blade that tucks a sheet into the nip of the fold rolls during each revolution of the fold rolls, a pressing device for exerting a force against one group of the ends of the product being folded and cam device operating the pressing device in timed relationship with the tucking of a sheet product into the fold rolls.
Abstract: A slide stop position control apparatus of a press machine which can automatically effect slide stop position adjustment when the die and/or the punch are changed. The apparatus comprises a first detector for detecting the tip of the punch and a second detector for detecting an upper end of the die when the slide is moved towards the die. The first detector is mounted to a die base and the second detector is mounted to the slide and each detector includes a light emitter and a light receiver. A slide position detector is also provided and all of the detectors are connected to a control unit for controlling a drive unit for the slide.
Abstract: A device for feeding material in the form of a coil of wire from a fixture for receiving and rotating said coil of wire through a straightening apparatus and a heating station to a hot and semi-cold metal-working machine in an intermittent manner. The device includes a cold feeding fixture with one or more pair of rollers which act on the cold wire to pull the wire from the coil and through the straightening apparatus and a hot feeding fixture downstream of the heating station with at least one pair of feed rollers which act on the hot wire and urge the hot wire against a stop of the metal-working machine. The device also includes adjustable link means for driving both feeding fixtures in formulant synchronism with the metal-working machine.
Abstract: There is disclosed point-of-use apparatus that is actuated by a pair of socket wrench handles. This device allows one man working in a confined area, such as a cabinet or junction box, to bend tubing, pipe or cable; pull cable or rope or cut soft cable or rope on a job location without the assistance of a co-worker and providing a high degree of accuracy. This device provides apparatus for bending pipe or cable or may be used for pulling cable. This apparatus includes end plates that are spaced a determined distance from each other by means of connecting rods. The rods may also carry bushings for bending cable, pipe, tubing or thin walled conduit to a specific diameter. The second apparatus is designed to cut soft cable, tubing, rope and the like and is also actuated by the same or a like socket wrench handle.
Abstract: A transition forming unit is provided for forming a strip of U-shaped cross-sectional configuration into a generally annular shaped cross-sectional configuration. The forming process is performed by a plurality of roll assemblies adjustably mounted on a pair of spaced longitudinally extending beams, one disposed on each side of the longitudinal axis of the forming unit. The beams are adjustable in respect of the longitudinal axis of the forming unit. A hold down assembly is provided for controlling the alignment of the U-shaped strip as it passes through the forming unit. The roll assemblies are mounted on each beam to absorb thrust loads produced during the forming process.
Abstract: A rotary die head has radially extendable and retractable thread cutting tools moving in paths of different angularity relative to the workpiece to permit one tool to cut a load flank in the workpiece at one lead and another tool simultaneously to cut a stab flank in the workpiece at a different lead, with the tools commonly generating the thread root, whereby a dual lead tapered thread may be formed on the workpiece in one pass. The respective cutting tools may have chasers with multiple teeth to permit the formation of deeper dual lead tapered threads in one pass. The die head may also have a radially extendable and retractable turning tool commonly driven with but moving in opposite directions from the thread cutting tools, whereby the turning tool when extended may form a seal or thread relief surface on the workpiece while the thread cutting tools are retracted.
Abstract: First, an equation expressing the relationships among the equivalent of the subsurface residual stress at a given point of material strip before entering a spiral-pipe forming machine, the equivalent of the subsurface residual stress at the corresponding point of formed pipe, the dimensions of the material strip, the outside diameter of the pipe, and the normalized magnitude of ring opening in the pipe is established using their measured values. Then, the equivalents of the subsurface residual stresses are measured while the pipe is being manufactured, and the normalized magnitude of the ring opening in the pipe is indirectly determined from the above equation using the measured equivalents.
Abstract: A method for controlling a rolling apparatus in which heated materials are successively extracted from heating ovens to be rolled with rollers and each extracting interval time between the materials is controlled such that the maximum root mean square valve of power supplied to motors for driving the rollers is less than the permissible root mean square power valve of the driving motors in any one of the rolling passes.
Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus for raising hooks of semi-finished springs, which includes a rocking arm arranged to be pivotally movable between an upper and a lower positions and having a pair of lateral semi-finished spring holding pieces at its forward end portion for transferring the semi-finished springs manufactured by a spring manufacturing machine towards a hook raising section provided above a spring discharge opening formed in a table of the apparatus, a clamping unit for fixedly clamping the semi-finished spring holding pieces which have been transferred to the hook raising section, a rotational position control member which rotates the semi-finished spring held between the semi-finished spring holding pieces for its positional control, and a pair of slide members on which hook raising tools are mounted and which are adapted to freely advance towards or retracted from the hook raising section.
Abstract: The braking channel comprises a fixed channel section for each strand of bars, provided with two open-bottom chambers which are normally covered up by the sliding surfaces of a pendulum structure, the effect of which will brake the bars and let them come to rest. For bar discharge on to the cooling bed, the pendulum structure is swivelled rhythmically toward the right and left to positions in which the discharge openings reach underneath a pair of chambers. The kinematic inversion could also be applied, in which case the sliding section would be in a fixed position and the channel sections would move in pendulum fashion.
Abstract: Gauge control method and apparatus for a multi-roll type upright rolling mill includes displaceable rolls which are movable not only in a first direction in which a material to be rolled is compressed but also in the axial direction thereof or in a direction in which the axis of the displaceable roll is inclined at a variable angle relative to other rolls as viewed in a horizontal plane, the other rolls being movable in the first direction. Position of the displaceable rolls is detected, and in dependence on the displacement of the displaceable roll, coefficient of mill stiffness of the whole rolling mill and those among the individual rolls are arithmetically determined. A roll gap defined between the rolls serving for rolling work is arithmetically determined on the basis of the arithmetically determined coefficients of stiffness, rolling load, and roll bending forces applied to the individual rolls detected by respective detectors.
Abstract: A rolling mill system for the continuous rolling of metal strip or strand into a strip of predetermined thickness and straightness is disclosed. The system includes a frame in which two metal working rolls are mounted in such a way that both the distance or nip between the rolls and the tilt of one roll with respect to the other may be regulated by two gap adjusting devices mounted in the roll frame on opposite sides of the centerline of the metal strip. At least one of the gap adjusting devices is operated responsive to a signal representing a measurement of the straightness of the strip product. The gap adjusting devices are hydraulic assemblies wherein each piston is affixed to a piston rod and each piston rod is affixed at its opposite end to a chock block in which the movable roll is carried. A position indicating rod which constitutes part of a position transducer is affixed to the opposite face of each piston to allow for monitoring of the actual distance between the two rolls at each end thereof.
