  • Patent number: 4481800
Abstract: A rolling mill system for the continuous rolling of metal strip or strand into a strip of predetermined thickness and straightness is disclosed. The system includes a frame in which two metal working rolls are mounted in such a way that both the distance or nip between the rolls and the tilt of one roll with respect to the other may be regulated by two gap adjusting devices mounted in the roll frame on opposite sides of the centerline of the metal strip. At least one of the gap adjusting devices is operated responsive to a signal representing a measurement of the straightness of the strip product. The gap adjusting devices are hydraulic assemblies wherein each piston is affixed to a piston rod and each piston rod is affixed at its opposite end to a chock block in which the movable roll is carried. A position indicating rod which constitutes part of a position transducer is affixed to the opposite face of each piston to allow for monitoring of the actual distance between the two rolls at each end thereof.

  • Patent number: 4480458
Abstract: A method for decreasing the extent of crop loss during rolling of ingots to semifinished products, such as slabs and blooms, in which a lighter than usual draft is taken during the odd pass, i.e. as the ingot bottom enters the rolls. During the subsequent even pass, as the ingot top enters the rolls, the draft taken is of the usual order of magnitude. These steps of alternate light and heavy passes are conducted until the ingot thickness is about twice the length of the maximum practically achievable contact arc--then the normal drafting sequence is utilized. A yield gain of about 1% or greater may thus be achieved by using such controlled counter-drafting.

  • Patent number: 4479601
Abstract: A rivet driver for easily fastening a rivet comprising a male shank and a female tube to separate members has a construction such that the separate members may be united by hydraulically driving the male shank into the female tube to thereby cause the female tube to be radially expanded outwardly and that upon completion of this hydraulic driving, it feeds a subsequent rivet to the supply position and is ready for next driving of the male shank into the female tube of the subsequent rivet.

  • Patent number: 4479373
Abstract: The bending assembly for one or more tubes at a time comprises a matrix or ie with substantially smooth cylindrical skirt and a sliding block provided with a groove for receiving the tubes to be bent and angularly rotatable relative to the matrix or die. The matrix or die and sliding block, along with a bearing shoulder for the tube to be bent, are retractable in a direction at right angles to the bending plane. In addition to the bending assembly, the apparatus comprises clamping devices and also structure for automatic centering of the tube and taking up of the tolerance on the legs or between different bendings. These last mentioned devices are arranged in line in a same structure, the bending and clamping devices being mounted on slides.

  • Patent number: 4478065
Abstract: A continuous rolling mill with crossed alternately inclined stands is described in which the working rolls and their roll chocks forming each stand are united to form a unit which can be displaced individually in a direction parallel to the axes of rotation of the said rolls. During changing of the rolls, a thrust member expels the said unit from the stand, in a direction parallel to the axes of rotation of the rolls, onto a load-carrying platform which can be tipped about an axis parallel to the rolling direction to a horizontal position on a carriage which is movable on rails along the sides of the rolling mill.

  • Patent number: 4473914
Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming a hollow sleeve for a blind fastener including the steps of forming a sleeve blank to have an enlarged sleeve head and a through bore having a radially inwardly extending shoulder forming portion, deforming the material on the shoulder forming portion to move axially toward the sleeve head and radially inwardly from the reduced diameter bore portion and substantially deforming the material away from the sleeve head and back towards the contour of the reduced diameter bore portion to form a sleeve stop shoulder.

  • Patent number: 4471641
Abstract: A machine for continuously punching, shearing and forming sheet material comprises a frame and punching, shearing, and forming stations. Rollers are provided for continuously feeding sheet material through the stations. A cam periodically engages the tools of the respective punching and shearing stations to actuate the respective punching and shearing operations and simultaneously to advance the respective punching and shearing stations in unison with the direction of feed of the sheet material. The forming station includes adjustable rollers which permit adjustment of the space between the rollers. The method of the present invention comprises continuously feeding the sheet material through the punching, shearing, and forming stations. At the punching and shearing stations, the tools for punching and shearing the sheet material move in unison with the sheet material during the time that they are performing their punching and shearing operations, respectively.

  • Patent number: 4464918
Abstract: A method and apparatus for automatic rear loading of mandrel type tube benders. The bender includes a base, bending head at the forward end of the base, carriage for positioning a tube with respect to the bending head, and a mandrel rod supporting on its front end near the bending head a mandrel. The improvement includes the use of two separate clamps for gripping the mandrel rod with respect to the base, one clamp being located near the rear end of the mandrel rod and the other clamp at an intermediate point on the mandrel rod spaced from the first clamp a distance at least equal to the length of the tubes to be bent. The clamps selectively grasp the mandrel rod, at least one clamp grasping the rod at any given time, to allow a tube to be loaded onto the mandrel rod while another tube is being bent.

  • Patent number: 4458514
Abstract: A combination for accurately determining the position of the movable part of a piston-cylinder device relative to the fixed part includes a long stroke position transducer movable in the operating direction of the device; a structure movable with the piston-cylinder device and which has a part extending in the operating direction; two position transducers positioned side-by-side and their direction of movement is normal to the operating direction. The movable parts of the two position transducers bear against the part of the structure. If there is no tilting of the piston within the cylinder, then electrical signals from the two position transducers remain unchanged, but the signals are changed if the piston tilts within the cylinder.
