  • Patent number: 9096984
Abstract: Fibrillar bacterial proteins can be mixed with oil in or on water. The interaction of the proteins at the oil-water interface can result in oil dispersion in water in the form of droplets surrounded by an aggregated protein film. The film may be formed by multiple layers of the fibrillar proteins with water between adjacent protein layers. The proteins may be derived from bacterial cells, such as Bacillus subtilis. The encapsulated oil droplets can be collected from the water, for example, as part of an oil spill clean-up or oil storage. The oil may be removed from the collected droplets, for example, by evaporation to produce a three-dimensional network composed of the aggregated films. The three-dimensional network material can be used as a coating for transplant material, grafted onto implant material to improve biocompatibility, as a precursor for tissue growth or engineering, or provided into a human or animal body.

  • Patent number: 9095826
Abstract: An apparatus (100) and process (400) for the treatment of wastewater and biological nutrient removal in activated sludge systems. The process uses substantially vertically downwardly presented inlet jets for delivering the incoming wastewater and recycled activated sludge into the body of liquid in a reactor, in a vertically downward direction and at a location just below the surface of the body of liquid. An effective circulating flow pattern of liquid is thereby established, along with optional concomitant entraining, dispersion or dissolving a fluid throughout the volume of the liquid body, facilitating a universal apparatus for mixing of anaerobic, anoxic, aerobic and oxic reactors or accommodating alternating said process conditions in one reactor. When an oxygen containing gas is entrained for aerobic fermentation, optimum gas bubble size is generated for efficient reaction with the digestion bacteria throughout the volume of the liquid body.

  • Patent number: 9095840
Abstract: An activated carbon material for removing a contaminant from a liquid. The activated carbon material can be a plurality carbon grains that have a pore volume of approximately 0.1 milliliters per gram (mL/g) in the range of less than about 15 angstroms in width. The carbon grains can also have or contain a nitrogen-containing species having a concentration of more than 2 atomic percent nitrogen. A plurality of the carbon grains can be used to make a contactor that is operable to remove or reduce perchlorate having a concentration of 20 parts per billion (ppb) to less than 4 ppb from 4,500 bed volumes of water with the nitrogen-containing species leaching off of the carbon grains less than 0.1 mg/L. The activated carbon material can also be electrochemically regenerated.

  • Patent number: 9090487
Abstract: A water treatment system (100) incorporating a solubles concentration reduction device (104) between a powdered activated carbon treatment (PACT) system (106) and a wet air regeneration (WAR) system (108). Soluble components may be removed by sequentially dewatering (20) then re-slurrying (28) spent carbon sludge (18). The reduced concentration of soluble materials reduces the need for scale removal maintenance and eliminates the necessity for exotic materials of construction of the WAR system components. The solubles concentration reduction device also facilitates active control of the solids concentration being delivered to the WAR system.

  • Patent number: 9085475
Abstract: In an ultrapure water producing method, a pre-treatment system treats raw water supplied from a raw water storage tank. A heat exchanger adjusts the treated water to a predetermined temperature before the water is supplied to a first bio-treatment means which is further connected to a second bio-treatment means. The second bio-treatment means is connected to a microbial body separation apparatus and, after treatments are performed in those apparatuses, the result is supplied as treated water to a primary pure water apparatus. Before the second bio-treatment means, a second supply mechanism is provided for adding a nitride source as a nutrient source and oxidizing agent (bactericidal agent). According to the ultrapure water producing method, urea in raw water can be removed to a high degree.

  • Patent number: 9079783
Abstract: A distributor plate for a resin tank of a fluid treatment device such as a water softener includes a central hub, an outer ring, a plurality of ribs extending between the hub and the ring and dividing the distributor plate into discrete segments, and a slotted plate connected therebetween. The distributor plate separates the resin bed from a lower end of the resin tank. The distributor plate further comprises at least one valve plate coupled to an underside of the distributor plate over at least one segment thereof. The valve plate is constructed from a material configured to float in the fluid being treated and is movable between a raised position during upflow and a lowered position during downflow. In this manner, the valve plate acts like a check valve to regulate the manner in which fluid flows through the distributor plate during upflow and downflow, improving resin scrubbing during upflow.

  • Patent number: 9073765
Abstract: This invention discloses a kind of method to remove organic pollutants through coupling microwave degradation based on microporous mineral adsorption. It consists of the following major steps: Fill hydrophobic porous mineral adsorbent into the adsorption column to adsorb organic pollutants in the organic wastewater, and start up the microwave generator after the adsorbent reaches saturation so that the organic pollutants adsorbed inside the adsorption column can be degraded under microwave induction. With the alternative operation and regeneration of two adsorption columns, the organic wastewater can be treated continuously. In the invention, with the technologies of microwave-induced degradation through hydrophobic microporous mineral coupling adsorption, organic pollutants can be removed from water efficiently, and the degradation process and carrier can be circulated. The pollutants can be mineralized into non-toxic and harmless micromolecular substance completely.

  • Patent number: 9073764
Abstract: A low concentration wastewater treatment system is provided that includes a high flux adsorbent material treatment system integrated with a low flux adsorbent material biological regeneration reactor. The high flux adsorbent material treatment system includes one or more unit operations for mixing low concentration wastewater with adsorbent material that is fresh, recycled, or a combination of both, and for decanting a liquid effluent having a reduced level of contaminants. The adsorbent material with adsorbed contaminants is regenerated in a low flux adsorbent material biological regeneration reactor in which a biological reaction occurs, such as biological oxidation, wherein organic contaminants in the wastewater are metabolized generally into carbon dioxide and water. Excess biomass is removed from the adsorbent material, and the thus-regenerated adsorbent material is recycled to the high flux adsorbent material treatment system.

  • Patent number: 9017556
Abstract: Ultrapure water of high purity having extremely low TOC concentration is produced by efficiently degrading urea in raw water by biological activated carbon treatment even when the raw water contains ammonium nitrogen. The ultrapure water production method, where raw water is treated in a primary pure water system, and then the resulting water is treated in a subsystem, contains a step of treating pretreated water with chlorine based oxidizer added by a biological treatment means installed upstream to the subsystem. Chlorine based oxidizer is added so that the chlorine based oxidizer concentration is 5 times or more than the ammonium nitrogen concentration of water treated in the biological treatment means in terms of Cl2.

  • Patent number: 9011694
Abstract: The present invention refers to a method for the synthesis of an adsorbing material consisting of a single-phase tetravalent manganese feroxyhite (?-Fe(1-x)MnxOOH), in which a percentage of 0.05 to 25% of iron atoms has been isomorphically substituted by Mn(IV) atoms. Its production takes place in a continuous two-stage flow reactor at weakly acidic conditions (pH 4-7) and high redox (300-800 mV). The material can be used for the removal of both pentavalent and trivalent arsenic as well as other heavy metals form water. More specifically, its adsorption capacity and selectivity depending on the trivalent and pentavalent arsenic water content, are determined by the manganese percentage and the compact or hollow morphology of its structural unit which can be both controlled by the parameters of the synthesis procedure.
