Abstract: A spherical fine particulate pigment in which pigment particles have a diameter of not more than 0.5 .mu., and the surface thereof is treated by a surface active agent, is provided by reacting a water soluble dye and an insolubilizing agent therefor in a water-in-oil type emulsion aqueous phase which is prepared by using a nonionic surface active agent. The pigment has an excellent dispersing ability and outstanding tinting strength. It has a wide variety of uses in the field of cosmetics, paints, inks, or the like.
Abstract: A composition is described which cleans, imparts water repellency and polishes hard surfaces. This composition comprises a solvent mixture of a glycol ether, a lower aliphatic alcohol, a hydrocarbon solvent and water, together with an organic polysiloxane, a silane, and a polycarboxylic chelating acid. A preferred composition contains propylene glycol monomethyl ether, isopropanol, high flash naphtha or mineral spirits, a polydimethysiloxane, citric acid, and orange oil terpene.
Abstract: An oil-soluble viscosity-reducing additive made by combining an amine and a polybasic organic acid permits the incorporation of large proportions of pigment into pigment dispersions. The increased proportion of pigment provides advantages in the manfacture of inks.
Abstract: Hydroxyfunctional carboxamide compounds of formula I ##STR1## are included in thixotropic formulations containing highly disperse silica as a thickening or thixotroping component in order to activate the silica or enhance its effect, to amerliorate any tendency of the silica to settle and/or to prevent weakening of the thixotroping effect of SiO.sub.2 in formulations which themselves form relatively strong hydrogen bonds. The compounds of formula I may be added to silica-containing thixotropic liquid formulations to improve the thixotropy, or highly disperse silica may be coated with such compounds for later incorporation into liquid systems to render them thixotropic.

Abstract: The invention is concerned with a substantially nitrogen-free process for chloride-route TiO.sub.2 pigment manufacture in which a TiO.sub.2 -containing feedstock is subjected to a fluidized-bed, high temperature carbochlorination in a chlorinator to produce TiCl.sub.4 which is thereafter converted to TiO.sub.2 by oxidation. The TiO.sub.2 -containing feedstock and a solid carbonaceous reducing agent are fed to the chlorinator under a CO.sub.2 blanketing atmosphere such that the carbochlorination is carried out in a substantially nitrogen-free atmosphere containing CO.sub.2 and a CO.sub.2 -rich flue gas is generated, the CO.sub.2 in the chlorinator assisting in controlling thermal balance of the carbochlorination reaction. The absence of significant concentrations of nitrogen in the flue gas results in a favorable condition enabling either or both the CO and CO.sub.2 contained in the flue gas to be readily recovered, purified and sold as by-products.

Abstract: A process for making an aqueous pigment dispersion comprising substantially 100 percent .beta.-phase, isometric copper phthalocyanine pigment particles is carried out by activating a pigment crude, followed by fine-milling the activated crude in the presence of an emulsion, the fine-milling taking place in a stirring mill. The resulting pigment slurry is then isolated as an aqueous presscake.

Abstract: Thermostable bismuth vanadate/molybdate pigments are prepared by precipitating onto a pigment, obtained by calcination, of the formulaBi VO.sub.4 .cndot.Bi.sub.2 Mo O.sub.6where n is 0.2-2.5, in aqueous suspension at 70.degree.-100.degree. C. within the pH range from 4 to 9.5 a first SiO.sub.2 -containing layer using an alkali metal silicate solution of a magnesium hexafluorosilicate solution, maintaining the suspension at 70.degree.-100.degree. C. for not less than 1 hour, producing a thick coating on the precoated pigment by adding further alkali metal silicate solution, magnesium hexafluorosilicate solution or a mixture of the two within the pH range from 4 to 9.5, and finally depositing wax on the SiO.sub.2 -containing layer by means of a waxing emulsion/dispersion, the products showing, compared with the starting pigment, an appreciably improved thermal stability in plastics.

Abstract: The surfactant composition of the present invention, which comprises mono acyl glycero phosphilipid(s) and one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of polyglycerol fatty acid esters, sucrose fatty acid esters, sorbitan fitty acid esters and glycerol fatty acid monoesters as essential components, exhibits excellent acid- and salt-resistances, permeability, emulsification and dispersion capabilities and hydrophilicity. Further it is highly safe and can be appropriately applied to various products, in particular, food, cosmetics and pharamceuticals.
Abstract: An improved asphalt composite utilizes a mixture of asphalt and a lossy microwave absorptive material normally in a granular form and dispersed homogeneously throughout the asphalt matrix. The use of a microwave material, particularly one having a Curie temperature in the range of about 100.degree. C., enhances removal, reconditioning and reforming the asphalt during patching or repair operations which rely upon microwave radiation heating.
Abstract: A process for producing a surface treated pigment wherein pigment particles are dispersed in a solution of a water soluble high polymer having radical generation sites to adsorb the water soluble high polymer on the surfaces of the pigment particles, adding a vinyl monomer to the resulting aqueous liquid dispersion of the pigment particles subjected to the adsorption treatment and polymerizing in the presence of a polymerization initiator, if desired, to form a polymer layer on the surfaces of the pigment particles. Formation of the white polymer particles composed only of polymer can be prevented and dispersion stability can be improved.

Abstract: A non-metallic, inorganic surface, such as glass or ceramic is decorated by heat transfer printing a pattern of disperse dyes thereon. A silane primer is applied to the glass or ceramic surface to receive and bond thereto an organic polymeric resin. The disperse dyes are then heat transferred onto and retained by the polymeric resinous layer. Oxidation of the disperse dyes is prevented by applying a seal coat of a protective material such as lacquer, varnish, or clear resin. The sealant and/or polymeric resinous layer are further provided with an ultraviolet absorber. Frosting of the pattern of disperse dyes is achieved by mixing a flatting agent such as silica in the sealant.
