The rotatable conical tool may be lifted and tilted in the opposite direction to further mill the pipe and elongate the hole. Tilting is effected relative to a pivot point located above the top pipe surface and in a plane extending through a center axis of the pipe, and the angle of inclination can be adjusted for determining the length of the finished hole.

    Abstract: A tool unit according to the invention has an arrangement wherein a shaft-like mount portion having a step is disposed on one of a tool body or a tool holder. The other of the tool body or the tool holder, includes a recessed fitting portion or bore shrinkage-fitted on the mount portion and having a step. The fitting portion includes a hydraulic feed passage for externally feeding a high-pressure oil to a gap defined between the step of the mount portion and the step of the fitting portion. In mounting the tool body to the tool holder, the high-pressure oil is externally fed to the gap through the hydraulic feed passage. Thus, a thin layer of the high-pressure oil is formed between the shrinkage-fitted surfaces, while on the other hand, the tool body and the tool holder are drawn close to each other. This facilitates the correction of inclination or axial displacement of the fitting portion relative to the mount portion, which occurred during the shrinkage-fit process.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for making non-circular piston rings which will precisely sealably conform to the cylinder wall of an internal combustion engine. In accordance with the method of the invention a metal strip of special cross-sectional configuration is coiled about a specially configured mandrel which is non-circular in cross section. Preferably the coiling mandrel is provided with a circumferentially interrupted thread form that has a zero helix angle along most of its circumference. During the coiling operation, using this type of mandrel, the metal strip is preformed at specific locations along its length into an angled configuration to form a coil body having a plurality of coils that have a zero helix angle along most of their circumference and a relatively steep helix angle for a short distance. After the coil is formed, the helix angle portions are cut therefrom to provide a plurality of generally planer, interrupted rings.

    Abstract: An improved coupling system for lockably coupling machine tool components is provided that includes a male coupling, a female coupling having an axis, a pair of opposing jaw members having lock surfaces for engaging ledge surfaces in the male coupling when the jaw members are moved apart, and a drive train having first and second drive spheres for simultaneously moving proximal and distal ends of the jaw members apart. The drive spheres engage ramps on the inner surfaces of the jaw members that have cylindrical profiles to provide lenticular contact between the spheres and the jaw members. Cam and follower surfaces are provided between the jaw members and one of the male or female couplings to enhance the locking force between the couplings. The invention provides a more rigid coupling between the male and female components by providing two locking spheres that operate in tandem to simultaneously spread the distal and proximal ends of the jaw members apart.

    Abstract: A gear-cutting machine contains one driving motor (28) with a corresponding actuator (26a, 26c . . . ) for each of various adjusting axes (B, C, X, Z . . . ). The actuators are supplied from a common dc intermediate circuit (24) and controlled by a controller (30). The dc intermediate circuit (24) is supplied by a rectifier circuit (22) from the network (20). For defined stopping of at least some of the driving motors (28) of the adjusting axes an emergency power supply is provided. The emergency power supply contains an ac motor (34) with a disk flywheel (36) mounted on the output shaft (38) thereof. In generating service of the ac motor (34) the latter provides direct-voltage energy to the ac intermediate circuit (34) via the actuator/rectifier (40). This energy suffices for at least some of the driving motors (28) to be brought into a state of rest by their corresponding actuators in controlled fashion. This avoids errors when operation of the machine is continued.

This Z cross section is formed by machining a unitary pallet in a first vertical direction to form the first lip, flipping the pallet and then machining in a substantially vertical portion in the opposite second vertical direction to form the second flange on an opposite side of the substantially vertical web section only. Placed periodically along the rib sections are stiffening elements formed during the machining operation.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for compensating a radial load between relatively axially articulatable inner and outer members, which in the exemplary embodiment are a spindle cartridge and spindle housing of a slip spindle drill assembly. The apparatus includes a strut having a curved inner end seated in a first seat on an outer surface of the inner member, and a curved outer end seated in a second seat supportably retained by a cap disposed adjustably in an opening through the outer member. The strut applies a radial force between the inner and outer members to compensate for the radial load. The strut is also pivotally disposed between the inner and outer members, whereby the strut pivots during relative axial articulation therebetween. The strut is substantially disposed radially relative to a direction of axial articulation when the inner and outer members are relatively axially articulated approximately one-half the axial articulation range.
