Abstract: Tetranitro aryl ether compounds are prepared by aromatic nucleophilic substitution of various aryl diols with 4-fluoro-1,2-dinitrobenzene. By reducing the nitro moieties of the tetranitro compounds, tetraamino aryl ether compounds are obtained. These latter compounds are useful as monomers in preparing thermally stable polymers having good solubility parameters.

Abstract: N-alkylated arylamines are prepared by reaction of arylamines which have at least one hydrogen atom on the nitrogen, with olefins or cycloolefins which can have substituents which are inert under the reaction conditions, at temperatures from 180.degree. to 450.degree.C, in the presence of catalysts. The improvement is that silicic acid which contains from 0.1 to 30 percent by weight of phosphoric acids, based on silicic acid, is used as the catalysts and that catalytic amounts of water are employed. N-alkylated arylamines are starting materials for the manufacture of dyes, pesticides, plant protection agents and growth regulators, and can also be used as mineral oil additives.
Abstract: Dark colored impurities, 2-aminonaphthalene and 2-naphthol are extracted from crude N,N'-di-2-naphthyl-p-phenylenediamine by contacting with a mixed solvent system comprising (A) at least one compound selected from the group consisting of alkanols and alkanediols and (B) at least one alkylated benzene.
Abstract: 1,1-Diphenylalkanes having a p-tert-butyl and a p'-alkyl group substituted thereon are a new class of compounds possessing a broad range of insecticidal activity.
Abstract: A process for producing chloroprene from 3,4-dichlorobutene-1 and sodium hydroxide solution wherein a dehydrated mixture of n-butanol and aqueous sodium hydroxide solution is reacted with 3,4-dichlorobutene-1 to form chloroprene and solid sodium chloride.
Abstract: A process for producing .alpha.-diketones which comprises oxidizing diaryl-substituted acetylenes with potassium permanganate in an aqueous acetone solution preferably in the presence of acetic acid.

Abstract: The tendency for methyl chloroform to decompose in the presence of metals, particularly aluminum, is inhibited by a stabilizer mixture comprising an epoxide, a nitroalkane, trioxane and either propylene glycol mono-methyl ether, dioxepane or a mixture thereof.
Abstract: A process for converting trichloroethylene present in 1,2-dichloroethane by chlorination of the trichloroethylene in the liquid phase in the absence of light and in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst wherein chlorine, 1,2-dichloroethane containing trichloroethylene and ethylene are introduced to a homogeneous reaction zone, with the mole ratio of ethylene to trichloroethylene being at least 50 and the mole ratio of trichloroethylene to chlorine being a maximum of 0.02.
Abstract: Perfluoroaklyl iodides are prepared by reacting iodine, iodine pentafluoride and tetrafluoroethylene in the presence of a fluoride catalyst selected from the group consisting of niobium fluoride, tantalum fluoride, boron fluoride, and molybdenum fluoride.
Abstract: Lower hydroxyalkyl amines in which at least one of the amino hydrogens is replaced by an acyclic monoterpenyl radical or hydrogenated acyclic monaterpenyl radical are useful repellents for insect repelling compositions.

Abstract: A multi-step, stereospecific total synthesis of steroids is disclosed. The starting materials for this process are the relatively inexpensive and readily available m-alkoxy acetophenones. The process is suitable for the preparation of racemic or optically active, medicinally valuable steroids, particularly A-ring aromatic steroids. This process features an early optical resolution and a unique asymmetric induction which insures the correct stereochemistry of the final steroidal product.
Abstract: Meso-1,2,3,4-tetrachlorobutane is produced in an improved liquid phase chlorination process wherein trans-1,4-dichlorobutene-2 is contacted with chlorine which is added to the reaction zone throughout the chlorination reaction at a rate of from about 0.01 to about 2.0 mole percent per minute based on the amount of trans-1,4-dichlorobutene-2 initially present.
Abstract: Selective bromination process for 2,5-dibromo-p-xylene which comprises bromination of p-xylene using approximately stoichiometric amounts of bromine and a hydrated iron containing bromination catalyst to give selectively high yields of substantially pure 2,5-dibromo-p-xylene.
Abstract: The following newly synthesized bromofluoromethylcyclopropanes have been found to possess utility as general inhalation anesthetics: 1-bromo-1,2-difluoro-2-methylcyclopropane and 1-bromo-1-fluoro-2-methylcyclopropane.
