Abstract: Amides of alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic carboxylic acids (especially alkyl-substituted salicylic acids) and the like, in which the alkyl substituent contains at least about 10 carbon atoms, are useful as dispersant additives for lubricants and fuels. Particularly useful are salicylamides in which the substituent is derived from propylene, 1-butene or isobutene and has a molecular weight of about 150-1750, and in which the amide moiety is derived from an alkylene polyamine. Such amides are preferably prepared by the reaction of the corresponding nitrogen-containing compound with a vic-hydroxyalkyl ester of the salicylic acid.

Abstract: A method of preparing a stabilized suspension of carbon in hydrocarbon fuel characterized by comminuting coal to form predetermined sized particles and coating the particles with at least a coating of an alcohol having 1-4 carbon atoms and thereafter admixing the alcohol coated particles with a liquid hydrocarbon to form the substantially uniform admixture for serving as a fuel. In a preferred embodiment, coal particles are first compacted and comminuted to the predetermined size range to form an abundance of platey, lenticular, irregular and angular particles for forming a stabilized suspensoid that exhibits the property of shear thinning so as to be pumpable with a lower apparent viscosity than the at rest viscosity of the slurry of carbon in hydrocarbon. Also disclosed are specific details of the method and preferred embodiments, including the fuel composition, per se.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a new fertilizer compound of the ureaform type and to a method for the production thereof. The new ureaform compound is characterized by the low average degree of polymerization between urea and formaldehyde. The new compound has a nitrogen content of over 41% by weight and consists of cold water soluble nitrogen as the main fraction and cold water insoluble as the second fraction which is substantially free of hot water insoluble nitrogen. The new ureaform compound is obtained by the condensation of urea and formaldehyde at a correct ratio between the reagents and termination of the reaction at a stage wherein excessive polymerization is prevented. The reaction is carried out in a controlled system with a pH in the range of 3.5 to 4.2. Particularly useful are the systems H.sub.3 PO.sub.4 -KH.sub.2 PO.sub.4 and H.sub.3 PO.sub.4 -NH.sub.4 H.sub.2 PO.sub.4.
Abstract: A prefuel composition which can be used as a fuel and which is easily mixed with water and when mixed with water and petroleum oil is an excellent fuel. A method for making such a prefuel composition which includes the steps of forming a non-homogenous mixture of carbon, water and petroleum oil and heating said mixture for a period of time and separating the resulting liquid from the solid in the mixture and burning said liquid in the presence of air for a period of time and then removing the source of air to extinguish the flame. There is also described a fuel composition which includes a solution of the preferred composition, water and petroleum oil.
Abstract: A method for making a fuel which comprises adding to an oxidation resistant tank from 80% to 60%, by volume, of an aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, or sodium bicarbonate, and also adding a lower alkyl alcohol to said tank and transferring a prefuel composition (as defined herein) from a separate container to said tank so that said prefuel composition mixes with said lower alkyl alcohol and aqueous solution and continuing to add said prefuel composition to said tank until the tank overflows, and recovering the thus obtained liquid fuel composition which has overflowed from the top of the tank.
Abstract: Disclosed is a reaction product and method for making same for use in supressing the ability of solubilized copper, iron, cobalt, nickel, chromium and manganese present in hydrocarbon liquids, such as gasoline and fuel oil, to catalyze oxidative degradation. The reaction product is obtained by reacting a 1,2-alkane diamine, a 2,4-dione and an ortho-hydroxy aromatic aldehyde, in stoichiometric proportions, preferably in an inert liquid medium. A preferred reaction product is that obtained by reacting ethylenediamine, 2,4-pentanedione and salicylaldehyde in a 1 to 1 to 1 mole ratio.
