  • Patent number: 8682280
Abstract: Broadcast emergency alert messages are selectively processed in accordance with various aspects of the alerted event, the alert message, and/or user preferences. In an example configuration, a mobile device is preconfigured with instructions defining how to process various types of emergency alert messages. A received broadcast emergency alert message is analyzed to determine various characteristics pertaining to the message, such as alert type, alert subtype, likelihood of alert occurrence, alert severity, receipt time, geographic extent of the alert area, originator of the alert message, a time when the alert message was originated. The message is processed in accordance with the preconfigured instructions and the characteristics pertaining to the message. A user of the mobile device can tailor the type of EAS alerts to be received, the time period, or periods, during which EAS alerts can be received, and actions to be taken with respect to received alerts.

  • Patent number: 8462746
Abstract: A terminal (24) for use in a wireless network (20) includes a radio frequency (RF) receiver (30), which is configured to receive and downconvert a RF signal. The RF signal includes downlink frames, each downlink frame including at least an allocation zone followed by a data zone. The allocation zone contains an indication of a time allocation in the data zone during which downlink data will be transmitted to the terminal. An analog/digital (A/D) converter (36) converts the output signal from the RF receiver into a stream of digital samples. A digital processing circuit (40, 52, 54, 56) processes the digital samples so as to identify the time allocation and to recover the downlink data transmitted during the identified time allocation, while shutting down the RF receiver during at least one interval during the downlink frame that is outside the identified time allocation.

  • Patent number: 8351938
Abstract: System and methods for generating and transmitting dynamic route-update-radius parameters are described. The parameters are dynamic in that the parameters may be modified from time-to-time. Modification of the parameters may be triggered by a radio access network (RAN) determining that a coverage area formed by the RAN is handling more than a threshold amount of communications to and/or from access terminals operating in the coverage area. The RAN may transmit the dynamic route-update-radius parameters so as to prevent some access terminals from registering with the coverage area while the coverage area is handling more than the threshold amount of communications. While the coverage area is handling a reduced amount of communications, such as less than a threshold amount of communications, the access network may transmit default route-update-radius parameters to coverage areas remote from that coverage area.

  • Patent number: 8204561
Abstract: A one-piece co-formed exterior hard shell case with an elastomeric liner formed on the interior of the exterior hard shell for mobile electronic devices. This hard protective exterior shell allows the device maximum protection from impacts with sharp objects while the interior elastomeric portion that provides shock protection for the device from impacts. The exterior hard shell part is formed to fit the device closely with a small offset from the devices surface. The exterior hard shell raps around the edges of the device. To allow the shell to be able to be mounted on the device the comers of the hard shell are cut open. This allows each sidewall to flex away when a device is inserted and snap back once it is in place. The elastomeric material fills in the gaps created at the comers of the exterior hard shell to allow flex for mounting.

  • Patent number: 8195191
Abstract: A method and apparatus for communicating the location of a split sector in a cellular wireless communication system. A processor receives a definition of the separate coverage areas defining the split sector and programmatically determines whether a minimum composite angle spanning the coverage areas exceeds a threshold such as 180°. If so, the processor establishes an data-representation of the split sector as an omnidirectional sector. Otherwise, the processor establishes a data-representation of the split sector as a non-omnidirectional sector. The processor may then communicate the established data-representation for use as a basis to facilitate a location-based service keyed to the location of the split sector, such as response to an emergency service call for instance.

  • Patent number: 8175021
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide methods for maximizing the bandwidth utilization in the uplink of a communication system supporting time division multiplexing between unicast and multicast/broadcast communication modes during transmission time intervals in the downlink of a communication system. This is accomplished by multiplexing at least unicast control signaling for UL scheduling assignments in TTIs supporting the multicast/broadcast communication mode. Moreover, multiplexing of unicast control signaling can also be accomplished by splitting a symbol of the multicast/broadcast TTI into two shorter symbols with the first of these two shorter symbols carrying at least unicast control signaling and the second of these shorter symbols carrying multicast/broadcast signaling.

  • Patent number: 8094628
Abstract: A method for communication includes deploying a half-duplex terminal in a wireless full-duplex communication network configured to permit simultaneous transmission of downlink paging messages and uplink access messages between a base station and full-duplex mobile terminals in the network. The half-duplex terminal is assigned paging channel slots in a cyclical sequence of the paging channel slots, so that the base station transmits the downlink paging messages to the half-duplex terminal only during the assigned paging channel slots. The half-duplex terminal is controlled so that the half-duplex terminal transmits the uplink access messages only during an interval bounded by the assigned paging channel slots occurring in successive cycles in the sequence.
