  • Patent number: 6996067
Abstract: A digital subscriber link data network incorporates a throughput test server (TTS) to provide fault identification, isolation, and verification of DSL service availability and data rates. An asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) terminal unit—remote (ATU-R) is connected to an ADSL terminal unit—central office (ATU-C) over a conventional copper loop or equivalent. Data connectivity via a packet switch provides access to high speed data networks, TTS connectivity and interfaces to service providers (SPS). Upon receiving a test request, a technician routes a customer to the TTS. The customer uses a web browser to access the TTS and download executable testing software, e.g., a JAVA applet. The applet causes test messages to be sent to and received from the TTS and computes upstream and downstream data rates that is displayed to the customer together with whether the measured data rates are consistent with a specified class of service.

  • Patent number: 6996124
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for supporting sleep mode wake up in a home phone line network. The method includes: detecting a limited automatic repeat request (LARQ) header in a frame; stripping the LARQ header and a frame check sequence (FCS) in the frame; recalculating the FCS for the stripped frame; and adding the recalculated FCS to the stripped frame. The method strips the LARQ header from a HPNA frame before it is sent to an Ethernet controller. By stripping the LARQ header, the Ethernet controller will correctly find the set byte location for the wake pattern and attempts to match the bit pattern with the wake pattern. In this manner, sleep mode wake up is supported.

  • Patent number: 6992974
Abstract: A system and method for providing fault tolerance in a network telephony system. Signaling messages according to a signaling protocol, such as the SIP protocol, are modified to include a path attribute with a network address corresponding to a backup proxy server. When a primary proxy server is supported by a backup proxy server, the primary proxy server inserts the Alternate Path tag into one or more signaling messages. When a network entity sends a message, it checks the message to identify the primary proxy server. Upon receiving a failure or timeout when attempting to send to the primary proxy server, the sending network entity should try the backup proxy server specified in the path attribute. When the backup proxy server receives the message, it may modify the message to specify the new routing path. As a result, subsequent messages get routed properly using the backup proxy server.

  • Patent number: 6985486
Abstract: An asynchronous transfer mode switch includes a switching engine with a set of buffer groups having a set of 1-cell buffers where a cell is stored in only one buffer. The number of buffer groups exceeds the number of input ports. The switching engine also comprises a buffer management module, which includes a FIFO memory to maintain a pool of buffer groups that have at least one available buffer and memory to store bit maps for each buffer group and to store a CNT field value for each buffer to indicate which of its buffers are available to store a new cell, and which buffers still contain a cell that have not yet been read by its destination ports. The bit maps and CNT field values are updated during buffer allocation and buffer reads so that the FIFO maintains a current list of all buffer groups having available buffers.

  • Patent number: 6985503
Abstract: An inverse multiplexer device has an input port for receiving a stream of data packets, a plurality of output ports for connection to outgoing physical links, and transmit buffers for preparing outgoing packets. An expansion port can receive packets from the transmit buffers and transfer them through a corresponding expansion port on another like inverse multiplexer to designated output links on the other inverse multiplexer. A controller outputs the data packets on a group of any of the aid links in accordance with an inverse multiplex protocol. The multiplexers can be thus cascaded to increase the number of output links that can be accommodated.

  • Patent number: 6985442
Abstract: In a network of interconnected edge and core routers, where packet data flows are received at edge routers and then transmitted toward intended destinations via a path through one or more core routers, fair bandwidth sharing is achieved without per-flow state monitoring in the interior routers. Each edge router is arranged to divide each input data flow into a set of layers each having an associated level, based on rate. The division process is done without reference to the content of the flow, and can use layers of equal or unequal size. The packets in a flow are marked at an edge router with their layer level, in a globally consistent manner. Each core router maintains a layer level threshold, based upon buffer management conditions, and drops layers whose level exceeds the threshold. During congestion, the level threshold is decreased; when congestion clears, the level threshold is increased.

  • Patent number: 6977948
Abstract: A system (100) for receiving data from an asynchronous network and transmitting such data onto a synchronous network includes a voice packet buffer memory system (108) with a jitter buffer (118) having groups of entries storing data for voice channels and jitter buffer valid bit (JBVB) memory (120) for status of a particular entry for multiple jitter buffer groups. Writing or reading data from a jitter buffer entry sets a corresponding JBVB memory bit to a valid or invalid state respectively. Jitter buffer data may be read with a corresponding state memory bit. If a corresponding JBVB memory bit is valid, data from a jitter buffer (118) may be provided as an output. If a corresponding JBVB memory bit is invalid, a loss recovery algorithm may compensate for such invalid jitter buffer data.

  • Patent number: 6975649
Abstract: A concatenated signal carrying an arbitrary mix of concatenated data traffic is split and transported across a network between a start node and an end node through a hyper-concatenated connection set up through independent pointer processor state machines. At a start node, the concatenated optical signal is split into two or more hyper-concatenated data streams. If a split occurs at a frame within a concatenated signal, the start node replaces a concatenation indicator of the frame with a payload pointer from a first frame of the concatenated signal and inserts a split indicator in the SS bits of the frame overhead. At an end node, the hyper-concatenated data streams are recombined to recover the original concatenated signal. Frames containing split indicators are modified to remove the split indicator and to replace the payload pointer with a concatenation indicator.
