  • Patent number: 5410993
Abstract: An exhaust control valve arrangement for a two cycle internal combustion engine for altering the compression ratio to provide optimum running under all conditions. An arrangement is provided for cleaning the exhaust control valve and its surrounding cooperating surfaces of the engine upon shutting off of the engine to preclude the formations of deposits that can cause sticking of the valve element. The valve element is rotated through a number of cycles after the engine is stopped through a wider range than during its normal valving operation for removing deposits. The number of cycles is chosen in response to an engine condition such as length of time of running or amount of lubricant supplied to the engine. Various valve arrangements are disclosed that improve the cleaning operation and permit cleaning even while the engine is running.

  • Patent number: 5398647
Abstract: An internal combustion engine having intake and exhaust manifolds and a cylinder defining a combustion chamber in which a piston reciprocates and having a wall formed with a port has a combined poppet/slide valve. This valve has a lift valve having a head sealingly engageable in the port and movable in a predetermined direction between a raised position permitting flow past the head through the port and a closed position blocking flow through the port and a stem extending from the head in the direction and having an outer tappet end. It also has a sleeve centered on and rotatable about an axis generally perpendicular to the direction and formed with a radially contoured cam radially engaging the tappet end of the stem so that rotation of the sleeve about its axis displaces the valve between its positions. The sleeve is formed with a pair of axially offset and radially throughgoing apertures.

  • Patent number: 5394839
Abstract: An internal combustion engine in which a circular housing is journaled to an end of a connecting rod remote from a piston at an eccentricity, and a rotary member is rotatably received in the circular housing, with an output shaft connected to the outer surface of the rotary member at an eccentricity. An internal ring gear provided in the circular housing meshes with a pinion gear fixed around a bearing. With this arrangement, it is possible to efficiently convert the explosion pressure in the combustion chamber into output torque on the output shaft, thus increasing the output torque of the engine while reducing fuel consumption. At the same time, the engine output power is stabilized in the low-speed region of engine operation. Consequently, the explosion pressure in the combustion chamber is efficiently converted into output power of the engine output shaft, thus achieving high efficiency and large output power of the engine.

  • Patent number: 5394846
Abstract: A dual bore throttle body assembly for a marine engine. The assembly includes a body having a pair of side-by-side bores, each of which is adapted to be enclosed by a flat throttle valve. A separate shaft is connected to each throttle valve and a throttle cable is connected to the shafts through a progressive linkage. The linkage is constructed such that only one of the valves is initially opened, and when that valve is approximately 50 percent open, the second valve is then opened. The speed of opening of the second valve is greater than that of the first valve so that both valves will reach the full opened position at the same instant. Each shaft is provided with a longitudinal slot which receives the respective throttle valve, and the valves are secured within the slots by mechanical fasteners such as screws.

  • Patent number: 5390634
Abstract: An internal combustion engine has a cylinder head with a combustion chamber defined by a depression in the head. The raised face surface of a piston extends into the combustion chamber in the cylinder head as the piston approaches top dead center, and creates turbulent squish currents within the chamber as closely matching surfaces on the piston face and on the walls of the combustion chamber in the head force gases out from between these surfaces. The turbulence helps to prevent autoignition and allows higher compression ratios than would otherwise be possible.

  • Patent number: 5383430
Abstract: A rotational speed control apparatus for internal combustion engines is constructed so that, when drive control of an idling speed control valve is performed based on a reference control quantity of the idling speed control valve, a highland learning value or a lowland learning value is stored for the idling speed control and a feedback correction quantity is computed for the idling speed control, in order to control a rotational speed of an internal combustion engine for a vehicle at a desired rotational speed, which is set in accordance with an engine temperature, at the time of an idling operation of the internal combustion engine. It is therefore possible to prevent an excessive drop in the rotational speed or a stall of the internal combustion engine, which occurs after the vehicle has descended a slope to a lowland, due to erroneous learning which is caused when the vehicle descends a slope from a highland to a lowland while travelling from a lowland to a highland and then to a lowland and so on.

  • Patent number: 5379744
Abstract: An apparatus for controlling the amount of exhaust gas recycled has a pneumatic valve 7, coupled to a pressure chamber 12 which is connected, on the one hand, over a pipeline 14 with the intake manifold 2 of the internal combustion engine and, on the other, for changing the exhaust gas recycling rate, with the atmosphere over a pipeline 16, through an electromagnetic valve 17. The duty cycle of the cycle valve 17 is varied by electronic control equipment 20 in accordance with the desired rate of recycled exhaust gas. An elevation correction is attained for the recycling rate because the atmospheric pressure is determined from the relationship between the aspirated air mass, determined by an air-mass meter 4 and the throttle valve angle, determined by a sensor 21. The duty cycle of the valve 17 is changed so that the recycling rate for the exhaust gas, which also depends on the load and the rotational speed of the engine remains essentially constant.
