  • Patent number: 4863069
Abstract: An applicator for particulate carpet-cleaning compositions having a cylindrical body formed of relatively rotatable inner and outer concentric cylindrical members in 360.degree. frictional nested engagement, separately attached non-rotatably to opposite wheel members of greater diameter than the body, and having dispensing apertures in cylinder which may be closed by the other depending on relative rotational positions. The cylindrical members are relatively rotatable very easily be opposed manual rotation of the wheels to dispensing positions, a closed position, and a filling position in which major filling openings in the cylindrical members are aligned. The cylindrical members are indexed to exact relative positions for accurate dispensing, spill-free filling and air-tight closure.

  • Patent number: 4859103
Abstract: A writing implement including a sleeve-shaped housing and an automatic closure mechanism for the nib. The actuating element has a shift mechanism 3', the spring 10 biasing the writing element 2 against the housing bears on the inner sleeve 104, that the shift mechanism 3' engages the outer sleeve assembly 41, that the return force of the spring 10 biasing the writing element 2 against the inner sleeve 104 is smaller than that of a spring 9 which biases the inner sleeve 104 against the outer sleeve assembly 41. Additionally the actuating element consists of two actuating members displaceable axially with respect to each other, of which the first actuating member 120 acts on the intermediate sleeve 104 and the second actuating member 108 acts on the writing element 2, carries the shift mechanism 3' and is actuated by the first actuating member 120.

  • Patent number: 4856693
Abstract: This invention relates to a container for feeding a bar shaped article such as an erasing gum, a pencil lead, a crayon, a pastel, or an eyebrow stick, especially for advancing or retracting the bar shaped article. A bar shaped article (8) is inserted into an inner sleeve (2) from the rear end with the outer sleeve (1) being held by the hand, then the rear end of the inner sleeve (2) is pressed. Inner sleeve (2) moves forward and rearward against the resilient force of an elastic biasing member (3). A chuck (4) at the end of the inner sleeve (2) opens and closes repeatedly and the end of the bar shaped article (8) is fed out and can be used. When the chuck (4) holds the bar shaped article (8) in an unused state a chuck open means opens the chuck 4 slightly and loosens the securing force preventing encroachment of the chuck (4) into the article (8) allowing the chuck (4) to easily separate from the article (8) when the article (8) is fed out.

  • Patent number: 4851008
Abstract: A bone implant prosthesis having an outer stress-free surface and a subsurface carried generally beneath and parallel to the outer surface for bearing tensile stresses. The prosthesis of the invention includes a plurality of slots undercutting the outer surface of the prosthesis thus forming a stress bearing subsurface to free the outer surface from being subjected to substantial stresses. The stress-free outer surface is readily adaptable to receive a porous coating to enhance bone ingrowth without decreasing the stress resistance characteristics of the prosthesis.

  • Patent number: 4848327
Abstract: A method for placing screws in an orthopedic nail used in setting fractures of the long bones of the body. A fluoroscope assembly is used initially to develop an image on a monitor. This image enables the physician to adjust the fluoroscope assembly until the x-rays from the fluoroscope are propagated along lines which are coaxially aligned with the nail screw holes. This status of alignment is then used to allow reference marks to be made on the skin located on one or more lines projected through the limb containing the fractured bone in coaxial alignment with the nail screw holes. The limb is then incised at the location of one or more of these alignment marks allowing tubular drill guides of a jig to be set against the bone in a position of coaxial alignment with the screws holes through the nail.

  • Patent number: 4848324
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and device for an emergent treatment of hypovolemic shock caused by loss of blood. According to the new method an elastic covering tube is applied onto the injured part of a patient's body, said tube possessing two main characteristics: (1) it is twisted along its horizontal axis as a rolled-up tube the end of which is rolled onto said body parts and (2) the material used for the elastic tube has to provide a pressure of between 100 to 400 mm Hg and to possess a critical elasticity coefficient. The critical elasticity coefficient being defined by a given formula which correlates the thickness of the material, unstretched radius and length of the tube, and length and radius of the injured part of the body to be covered.

  • Patent number: 4834760
Abstract: A bi-articulated prosthetic terminal device which is of the type having an upper proximal jaw and a lower proximal jaw pivotally connected at a proximal joint for handling relatively large, bulky and/or heavy items and a distal jaw assembly pivotally attached at a distal joint to the extending end of the upper proximal jaw and fitted with an upper distal jaw and a lower distal jaw. The lower distal jaw cooperates with the extending end of the lower proximal jaw at the distal joint to create the capability for handling small, thin and/or light items. In a first preferred embodiment of the invention, the distal jaw assembly is biased to close the lower distal jaw against the lower proximal jaw by means of a spring provided in the distal joint. In a second preferred embodiment, this bias is created by a rubber cushion situated between the upper distal jaw and the upper proximal jaw.

  • Patent number: 4834081
Abstract: A tool for removal of a joint prosthesis intended for implantation in a body. The prosthesis includes a component adapted to be fixed to a long bone having an intramedullary canal and further includes an elongated male stem having a uniformly tapered outer surface. In order to accommodate the particular size of long bone to which the component is to be fixed, a properly sized female stem is attached to the male stem before the component is fixed to the long bone. The female stem is adapted to be received in the intramedullary canal for fixation thereto, and has a uniformly tapered inner surface, the angle of the taper being substantially similar to the angle of taper of the outer surface of the male stem. As a result, the male stem and female stem become locked together when the inner surface of the female stem engages the outer surface of the male stem. The tool serves to disengage is obtained the male stem from the female stem as well as to disengage the female stem from the bone.
