Abstract: An apparatus and method for detecting an analyte of interest using paper spray mass spectrometry includes a spray material; a sample on the spray material including an enzyme of interest; a solvent to hydrate the sample, promote enzymatic activity, and extract analytes of interest from the sample; a substrate specific to the enzyme of interest, wherein any of the spray material and the solvent includes the substrate; a voltage source to apply a voltage to the spray material to create charged droplets of a mixture containing the sample; and a mass spectrometer to perform spectrometry on the droplets to perform any of: identify the analytes of interest in the sample; and measure a level of inhibition in any enzymes contained in the sample.

Abstract: Herein is reported a method for producing a thymocyte supernatant comprising the steps of co-cultivating thymocytes and mononuclear cells at a cell ratio of at least 0.5:1.2 in the presence of phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate and Phytohemagglutinin M for up to 60 hours, and separating the co-cultivation medium from the cells and thereby producing the thymocyte supernatant.

Abstract: A method of dissociating single cells from a biological tissue sample is described herein, along with systems for performing such methods. The method includes generating one or more ultrasonic wave pulses using a transducer comprising one or more Fresnel Annular Sector Actuator (FASA) elements; and applying energy from the generated one or more ultrasonic wave pulses to a sample container holding the biological tissue sample through a coupling medium that couples the one or more FASA elements to the sample container to dissociate single cells from the biological tissue is described herein.
Abstract: The present invention provides method for treating a metabolic disorder, dietary intolerance, or malabsorption in a subject that causes an excess of a metabolite or a dietary substance, particularly a carbohydrate such as galactose or fructose, that the subject does not tolerate by administering an effective amount of an adaptively evolved yeast strain to the subject or to food that reduces the excess of the metabolite or dietary substance. Specifically, the invention is directed to methods for treating the metabolic disorder, such as galactosemia or fructosemia, in which an excess of the carbohydrate is present. The invention also provides isolated, adaptively evolved yeast strains that degrades a metabolite or dietary ingredient, such as galactose or fructose, and methods for preparing such isolated, adaptively evolved yeast strains.
