Patent number: 6145597Abstract: A technique is provided for retaining a cable assembly in a length of conduit, such as coiled tubing. The retaining assembly is secured to an end of the coiled tubing and to tensile members of the cable assembly. A retainer element may be secured directly to conductors of the cable assembly for holding the cable assembly adjacent to the retaining structure. The retainer may include a flat plate-like structure which abuts against a surface of the assembly, such as against an upper surface of a connector to prevent re-entry of the cable into the coiled tubing. Following attachment of the cable and coiled tubing, the submersible equipment coupled to the coiled tubing may be retracted or withdrawn from the well. Certain of the conductors may be coupled to monitoring circuitry for continuously monitoring well parameters during such repositioning. The technique may be used during initial installation of coiled tubing deployed systems, or during subsequent removal or servicing of the equipment.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 1999Date of Patent: November 14, 2000Assignee: Camco International, Inc.Inventor: Lee S. Patent number: 6146055Abstract: An anchor for a mine roof bolt incorporates a single large rib at the top of a segmented shell. This single large rib is forced into the wall of the bore hole by the downward movement of an associated threaded camming nut during the first few revolutions of the roof bolt. The remainder of the outer surface is generally smooth or unserrated and provides a large bearing surface which is urged against the bore hole wall upon further rotation of the bolt. The camming nut has a specific shape flaring substantially near its upper end such that a relative large area of the bore hole wall below the rib is forced into compression. When fully engaged, the camming nut compresses a tightening washer of a metal alloy softer that the camming nut or the shell. The washer is forced into the threads of the nut thereby preventing loosening of the bolt.Type: GrantFiled: February 19, 1999Date of Patent: November 14, 2000Inventor: Claude White

Patent number: 6142236Abstract: A subsea wellhead assembly located at the sea floor that includes a subsea wellhead and a stationary blowout preventer mounted to the subsea wellhead for controlling a well during drilling. A drill pipe defines an annulus within the stationary blowout preventer. The drill pipe extends to a rotational drive mechanism on a drilling rig at the surface. A drilling head forms a seal against a drill pipe with a rotatable inner portion. The rotatable inner portion rotates with the drill pipe and prevents drilling fluid returns from flowing up the annulus around the drill pipe and prevents drilling fluid returns from discharging onto the seabed. The drilling head is mounted on top of the stationary blowout preventer. A riser extends upward from the drilling head and extends to a floating drilling rig. The riser has a lower end that connects into the drilling head below the drill pipe seal for receiving mud-returns flowing up around the annulus of the drill pipe.Type: GrantFiled: February 18, 1999Date of Patent: November 7, 2000Inventors: Norman Brammer, Philippe Nobileau

Patent number: 6142709Abstract: A foundation system for tension leg platforms without use of foundation templates, wherein each tendon (5) is directly connected to a socket (9) inside the pile (8), said piles (8) being positioned for driving purpose by means of a pile-driving template (10) which is employed as a spacing device is described. The pile-driving template (10) is positioned with the aid of pins (11) that slot into guides (7) built into the well template (6). After the groups of piles (8) needed to anchor a corner of the platform (1) have been driven in, the pile-driving template (10) is withdrawn and repositioned so as to enable the piles for the other group of legs to be driven; this process continues until all of the pile-driving is finished. Alternatively one single pile-driving template (16) may be employed to guide the driving of all the piles (8) thus doing away with the need to reposition the template every time.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 1999Date of Patent: November 7, 2000Assignee: Petroleo Brasileiro S.A. - PetrobrasInventors: Cipriano Jose De Medeiros Junio, Elisabeth De Campos Porto, Maria Marta De Castro Rosas, Isaias Quaresma Masetti

Patent number: 6142707Abstract: A system for direct electric heating of a subsea pipeline is disclosed in the form of a pipe-in-pipe flowline having an electrically conductive outer carrier pipe and an electrically conductive inner pipe or flowline arranged longitudinally, substantially concentrically within the outer pipe. An annulus is defined between the inner and outer pipes and a pipe insulating joint assembly structurally joins, but electrically insulates, the inner and outer pipes at a first end of the subsea pipeline. A power input provided on the surface facilities is electrically connected across the inner and outer pipes at the first end of the pipeline, and an electrical pathway completes the circuit by connecting the inner and outer pipes at the second end of the pipeline.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 1997Date of Patent: November 7, 2000Assignee: Shell Oil CompanyInventors: Ronald Marshall Bass, Carl Gottlieb Langner

Patent number: 6142713Abstract: The present invention is a family of concrete segmental retaining wall blocks, together with the related manufacturing process and molds, and retaining walls constructed of such blocks. The segmental retaining wall blocks are used to form retaining walls by dry stacking one course of blocks on another. The preferred blocks are characterized by: (a) a lower surface and a generally planar upper surface in which the upper and lower surfaces permit generally parallel alignment between the upper surface of a block and the upper surface of adjacent blocks in the next adjacent course of blocks when the blocks are stacked to form a retaining wall; (b) a downwardly projecting lip to aid in the creation of the desired setback and to facilitate positioning successive courses of blocks in a wall without the use of separate pins or mortar; (c) sidewalls which converge in a rearward direction to facilitate the construction of curved walls; and (d) a decorative front face which may be formed by splitting cured blocks.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 1998Date of Patent: November 7, 2000Assignee: Anchor Wall Systems, Inc.Inventors: Michael E. Patent number: 6142706Abstract: A thermal treatment wall emplaced to perform in-situ destruction of contaminants in groundwater. Thermal destruction of specific contaminants occurs by hydrous pyrolysis/oxidation at temperatures achievable by existing thermal remediation techniques (electrical heating or steam injection) in the presence of oxygen or soil mineral oxidants, such as MnO.sub.2. The thermal treatment wall can be installed in a variety of configurations depending on the specific objectives, and can be used for groundwater cleanup, wherein in-situ destruction of contaminants is carried out rather than extracting contaminated fluids to the surface, where they are to be cleaned. In addition, the thermal treatment wall can be used for both plume interdiction and near-wellhead in-situ groundwater treatment. Thus, this technique can be utilized for a variety of groundwater contamination problems.Type: GrantFiled: May 13, 1998Date of Patent: November 7, 2000Assignee: The Regents of the University of CaliforniaInventors: Roger D. Patent number: 6132144Abstract: A passive anchor latching mechanism which allows its user to attach a moog line to an anchor without using a secondary mechanism such as a remotely operated vehicle to attach the cable or anchor wire to the anchor. The passive anchor latching mechanism comprises three elements: (1) a latch ring which may have a tether line removably coupled thereto; (2) an anchor post extending vertically upward from the top of the anchor; and (3) a crown line attached to the anchor and buoyed at the water's surface. The latch ring consist of a tail which attaches to the mooring line and a ring which slides downward along the crown line. The anchor post has an anchor collar coupled thereto which forms an annulus groove with the anchor post. The annulus grove latches the ring of the latch ring to the anchor post while the tail of the latch ring prevents the ring from detaching from the anchor post and riding backward up the anchor post once the latch ring is latched.Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 1998Date of Patent: October 17, 2000Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Robert F.
