  • Patent number: 6074134
Abstract: A tensionable mine roof cable bolt having a resin grouted upper portion and a mechanically anchored lower portion. The lower portion includes a shaft which is swaged to the cable and accepts a mechanical anchor. The cable bolt is rotated during installation in a mine roof bore hole to mix resin and simultaneously engage the mechanical anchor with the rock. A drivehead press fitted onto the lower end of the cable fails upon tensioning of the bolt to a predetermined load.

  • Patent number: 6070669
Abstract: An adjustable wellhead connector is secured to the lower end of a BOP and riser assembly and has a housing which surrounds a groove profile on the upper outer surface of a first wellhead housing. The housing has a window on its inner surface which contains a removable first locking member. The first locking member has a groove profile on its inner diameter which mates with the groove profile on the first wellhead housing. The first locking member is movable between inner and outer radial positions which correspond to locked and unlocked positions, respectively. The first locking member is moved by a hydraulic system contained within the housing. The wellhead connector may be readily adapted to connect to a second wellhead housing having a different outer diameter than the first wellhead housing by replacing the first locking member with a second locking member. The second locking member enables the wellhead connector to connect a riser to the second wellhead housing.

  • Patent number: 6065904
Abstract: An apparatus for monitoring soil compaction using a compaction machine which applies periodic impact blows to the soil surface. The apparatus comprising a rotatable, multi-sided compactor mass that applies periodic impact blows to the soil surface when rolled over that surface. Data related to the level of compaction of the soil surface is derived, during compaction of the soil surface, from the deceleration of the compactor mass as it impacts the soil surface. This is achieved using one or more accelerometers mounted on the impact compactor.

  • Patent number: 6053662
Abstract: A panel assembly to be used in an RCC dam structure, or the like, includes a precast concrete panel, a geomembrane liner extending over the full face of the panel and a geotextile sheet backing on the liner directly attached to the panel. The liner seals the panel against water leakage in a manner that allows shifting of the dam structure without placing undue stress on the liner or the interconnecting sealing strips. The geotextile sheet is preferably fabricated of a mat of non-woven polyester fibers and the geomembrane liner is preferably polyvinylchloride. The geotextile sheet is attached by hardened concrete slurry integral with the panel. Once the panel assembly is connected to adjacent panel assemblies by the sealing strip to form the dam structure, stress concentrations are relieved in the event that the panels shift for any reason.

  • Patent number: 6053253
Abstract: A connector assembly includes first and second connector parts. The first connector part has a bearing portion and the second connector part is connectable with the first connector part. A carriage comprises an abutment which is disposed against the first connector part and the carriage is reciprocatable between a forward position for connecting the connector parts and a retracted position for disconnecting the connector parts. A bias is provided for biasing the bearing against the abutment. The bearing portion and the abutment cooperate to permit pivoting of the first connector part in response to a force in any lateral direction on the first connector part. The first connector part may include a weakened portion providing a reduced resistance to shear. The connector assembly may also form part of a wellhead assembly.

  • Patent number: 6050745
Abstract: WavBrakerSteps is a hydrodynamic structure comprising a main form (20, 22, 24, 26), a series of inclined upward ramped steps in the shape of a sine wave curve. WavBrakerSteps redirect and dissipate the relentless attacks by energizes and forces of sea waves, wind waves, tidal forces, ship and boat wakes. These energies and forces scour and erode the base or toe, the supporting structures, of waterfront bulkheads, seawalls and seacoasts. The action by waves flowing upward and then downward over the inclined, curved and ramped WavBrakerSteps prevents undercutting, undermining and sinking from occurring. These natural actions protect the beach environment.

  • Patent number: 6050746
Abstract: A method for controlling deformation of an erected structural metal plate culvert or underpass during backfilling of the erected structure comprises: building progressively a reinforced earth retaining system on each side of the erected structure by alternately layering a plurality of compacted layers of earth with interposed layers of reinforcement to form reinforced earth on each side of the erected structure and securing to each side of the structure each said layer of reinforcement in the reinforced earth, whereby such securement of each said layer of reinforcement to said structure controls deformation of the erected structure during backfilling with the reinforced earth on each side of the structure. The layer of reinforcement may be a plurality of strips extending away from the structure, or a reinforcement mat of interconnected rods.

  • Patent number: 6048134
Abstract: A method and apparatus for sustaining optimum fluid entrainment conditions in a contaminant extraction well is disclosed. More specifically, the present invention includes a central controller which communicates with a pressure detector and an aspiration control source that are connected to a contaminant extraction well. The central controller causes aspiration air to flow into or out of the extraction well based upon the vacuum level that has been measured by the pressure detector. This system enables the vacuum to be maintained at a predetermined level, and allows the well to operate as changes occur in the groundwater content of the area in which the well is operating.

  • Patent number: 6045297
Abstract: The present disclosure is directed to a method and apparatus for drilling rig mobilization and demobilization. The rig is assembled or constructed at a remote site. It is later taken apart and transported to another remote site or back to a staging point. The rig itself comprises a rig floor which is supported on a set of vertical rig legs which support the rig floor for movement between raised and lowered positions. An equipment module is preferably installed on the rig floor. It goes above the rig floor while other modules are attached under the rig floor and provide additional equipment and service space. The method involves the transportation of the rig floor, the legs, equipment module and other modules to and from the rig site by hover craft while riding on a top deck on the hover craft for lateral transfer and installation.

  • Patent number: 6045296
Abstract: A tensioning device is provided for applying tension to a riser from a surface deck of an offshore oil or gas well. The tensioning device is used with a riser of the type having threads formed on an exterior surface thereof. A tension ring of the tensioning device is formed from first and second ring halves that are clamped together about the riser. The first and second halves have inner threads for engaging the threads of the riser. A clearance exists between the first and second ring halves when the ring halves are clamped together about the riser to allow the first and second ring halves to be tightened against the exterior surface of the riser so that the tension ring is securely fastened to the riser. Fastening means are used for clamping the first and second ring halves together about the riser. Tensioning members that couple at one end to the tension ring and at the other end to the surface deck are used to apply tension to the riser from the surface deck.
