  • Patent number: 5900723
Abstract: A VAR generator compensation system wherein the voltage of the capacitor or reactor bank is changed as a means of adjusting the phase angle is taught. Briefly stated a reactive bank such as a capacitor bank is connected to the secondary of an autotransformer such that the voltage of the reactive bank is controlled by the autotransformer. The line and load are connected to the primary of the autotransformer, such that changing the voltage of the autotransformer and hence the secondary voltage connected to the reactive bank, thus changes the VARS generated on the grid or system.

  • Patent number: 5898579
Abstract: An inductively coupled power distribution system for moving vehicles, in which resonating primary circuits to distribute power for resonating secondary circuits to collect and use in an optimized manner. In order to have all circuits resonating at substantially the same frequency, devices which detect and adjust resonating components are used, such as a frequency drift compensator in which the present frequency is compared to a reference voltage and causes a driver to be ON or OFF accordingly. Switches are driven CLOSED or OPEN respectively and when CLOSED, supplementary capacitors are included with a main capacitor in a primary resonant circuit. Dithering or pulsed control provides a continuous control of resonance, as the system takes some milliseconds to respond.

  • Patent number: 5892673
Abstract: A high-density control circuit for an auxiliary resonant commutation pole (ARCP) circuit is internal to the ARCP package and includes a state machine sequencer for providing control and timing signals to achieve high-efficiency, zero-voltage, and fault-tolerant switching converter operation. The phase leg controller receives as inputs a phase enable signal and a pulse width modulation (PWM) signal from a system controller and gate drive feedback signals from main and auxiliary gate drivers. There are four paths the state machine sequencer can take when making a transition from one dc rail to the other, depending on whether the main diode or main switch is conducting and the magnitude and polarity of the inverter pole output current.

  • Patent number: 5886881
Abstract: A single ended forward DC-to-DC converter includes a transformer having a primary winding electrically connected to a primary switch and a secondary winding electrically connected to a secondary switch and a clamping capacitor. The clamping capacitor stores the magnetization energy from the secondary winding when the primary switch is turned off, thus causing the transformer core to be reset during the period that the primary switch remains off. The converter can use mosfets as the primary and secondary switches, such that a change in the voltage at the secondary winding of the transformer, due to the turning off of the primary switch, results in an automatic turning on of the secondary switch. The combination of the clamping capacitor and the mosfet switches increases the simplicity of the DC-to-DC converter while eliminating undesirable characteristics such as dead time and voltage stresses on the switches.

  • Patent number: 5886888
Abstract: A voltage source type power converting apparatus having voltage source type power converter units and phase-shifting transformers. The transformers have either a common multiple-phase primary winding or a group of parallel connected multiple-phase primary windings, either of which being connected in parallel or series to a multiple-phase AC system. The transformer further include a group of multiple-phase secondary windings with phase differences with respect to each other and which are connected to voltage source type power converter units. The voltage source type power converter units are operated with the phase differences. Accordingly, the construction of the multiplexing phase-shifting transformer is simple, and fundamental electric variables can be controlled by a simple phase controlling operation. In addition, a higher harmonic defect of the AC system can be reduced, and the DC voltage can be easily raised.
