    Abstract: Methods for handling packets received at a network device are described. The packets are placed into a queue that contains packets of a first type and packets of a second type. The packets of the first type include protocol packets, and the packets of the second type include packets other than protocol packets. A first count is incremented when the queue is full. A packet of the second type is forwarded for processing provided that the first count satisfies a condition; otherwise, the packet of the second type is discarded.

The uplink frequency band to be used can be determined from a know frequency relationship between the detected downlink carrier and a corresponding uplink carrier or by monitoring the detected downlink frequency band for information indicating the uplink frequency band/carrier to be used. Carrier search methods involving searching for the narrowband high power signals used to provide carrier information and/or to indicate the frequency band to be monitored are described. Power detection methods can be used to detect the high power signals avoiding the need for symbol timing synchronization and/or channel estimation with regard to detection of the signals used to locate the frequency band to be used.

In the event of a failure, the disabled communications path may be re-enabled, and first or second backup communications paths may be employed, where the first backup communications path may use primary connections between adjacent nodes used for primary communications paths normally used to carry the media, and the second backup communications paths may use secondary connections between non-adjacent nodes. The disabled communications path may be dynamically moved in a logical or physical manner in an event of a communications link or node failure to maintain a “horseshoe” topology in the ring network.

Responsive to determining that the message includes the in-dialog request, a determination is made whether a call state associated with the dialog is found in memory. Responsive to determining that the call state associated with the dialog is not found in memory, a non-call terminating error response is made responding to the in-dialog request. The non-call terminating error response may cause the requester to terminate the in-dialog request but not terminate the dialog.

A correction factor is determined for the second clock in accordance with transmit and receive time stamps of transferred time-stamped packets bounding the consecutive intervals. The correction factor is applied to the second clock to synchronize the second clock of the receive node with the first clock of the transmit node.

    Abstract: A method of updating routing information in a network where reboot information of other nodes in the network is used to determine whether a given node has recent route updates. If the reboot information indicates the given node has not recently rebooted, then routing information from that given node is used to update the routing information of the comparing node. The reboot information may be a reboot counter which is incremented by a node in response to the node going through a reboot process. When a node reboots, it may request the reboot counter from neighboring nodes. The received reboot counter is compared to the stored reboot counter for at least one node. The rebooting node may choose to receive routing information from a node which has not had its reboot counter changed from the stored reboot counter.

The invention reduces the number of packets communicated, in part, by coalescing acknowledgements (ACKs) and/or finish (FIN) flags into another packet. In one embodiment, if the client provides a substantially complete request for the server, an ACK to the request may be coalesced into a corresponding response from the server. When another request is to be provided to the server, within about half of the minimum retransmission timeout, an ACK to the prior response may be coalesced into a subsequent request to the server. Packet reduction may also be achieved by stretching a packet to insert additional data when the insertion maintains a packet size that is within a negotiated maximum segment size (MSS).
