Abstract: A method is provided for making certain hydroxy-terminated arylene ethers useful as spacers in liquid crystalline polyesters. There is initially formed a dicarbonyl adduct from a dihydroxyaromatic compound, such as hydroquinone and a haloarylcarbonyl compound. The adduct formed is oxidized to the corresponding diester. Hydrolysis of the diester provides the hydroxy-terminated arylene ether.

Abstract: Improved processes for liberating boronic, RB(OR').sub.2, and borinic, RR'BOR', esters from their "ate" complexes, free of alcohol are provided. Pyrolysis of lithium organylborates LiRB(OR').sub.3 and LiRR'BOR', wherein R is an organyl group and R' is straight or branched-chain lower alkyl, directly yields the relatively volatile boronic and borinic esters in high purity, leaving behind a residue of lithium alkoxide. Treatment of the lithium organylborates with an appropriate acid halide cleanly liberates either volatile or non-volatile boronic or borinic esters, readily separated from the lower alkyl ester produced as a by-product. The novel compound lithium dimethylborohydride is also provided.

Abstract: A removable rating plug for a circuit breaker provides an active variable impedance in series with a reference resistor between the sensing terminals of the circuit breaker trip circuit to adjust the sensing voltage produced in response to the input current received from current monitors in the protected circuit. The active variable impedance, which is energized by the input current, includes a high gain transistor amplifier, preferably a Darlington transistor, controlled by an operational amplifier. A control circuit includes a pair of reference diodes which match the forward drop across the Darlington transistor when full on, in series with a reference voltage selection circuit which applies a reference voltage to the non-inverting input of the operational amplifier.

Abstract: A method for the continuous, catalytic production of an aromatic carboxylic acid product by liquid-phase, exothermic oxidaion of an aromatic alkyl with an oxygen-containing gas and a solvent medium in an oxidation reactor and utilizing reverse osmosis is disclosed. In particular, a multiple ingredient or component-containing slurry product stream is withdrawn from the reactor, the slurry product stream is then separated to produce a product-containing stream and at least one mother liquor stream which contains, in addition to a number of desirable process stream components, such as oxidation reaction catalysts, a number of undesirable process stream impurities. The impurities are selectively removed from the mother liquor stream by passing at least a portion of the mother liquor stream through a reverse osmosis separation device to produce a catalyst-bearing stream having a relatively lesser impurities-to-catalyst weight ratio and a purge stream having a relatively greater impurities-to-catalyst weight ratio.
