  • Patent number: 5707489
Abstract: A method of processing recycled paper which contains such a high amount of wax, hot melts or stickies that they would be expected to cause a stoppage of the paper-manufacturing machine. The paper to be recycled is pulped in a pulper and passed on to respective subsequent stages which include a despecker, grader and hydrocyclone. Pulping takes place at a temperature of at least 60.degree. C., and at the same time subjects the paper to a high shear action. The processing line includes a pulp-thickening stage, preferably after the processing stages mentioned, in order to separate off a very high proportion of the wax, hot melts and stickies finely dispersed in the pulper.

  • Patent number: 5705031
Abstract: In a kraft pulp mill, a process and apparatus for removing and washing dregs from green liquor so that the pH of the dregs is below "hazardous waste" levels. Specifically, green liquor clarifier underflow is filtered using a simple non-precoat cassette filter to form a first dregs cake. The dregs cake is diluted, preferably with water. The diluted dregs cake is then filtered in a precoat dregs filter to produce a dregs cake that is at least 50% solid and has a pH of about 12.0 or less.

  • Patent number: 5702737
Abstract: A readily water-dispersible hop extract composition, consisting essentially of hop aroma and flavor components comprising at least 10% by weight of free fatty acid substances derived from hops, is useful to increase the utilization of the hop aroma and flavor components. It may be produced by treatment of an extract of hops with a lipase or with an excess of alkali. The starting hop extract, made conventionally as by extraction with organic solvent or supercritical carbon dioxide, preferably has alpha, isoalpha, and beta hop acids removed before treatment with excess alkali. A cosolvent, such as a lower alkanol, polyol, or wetting agent, heat, or high shear may be used to improve mixing of the lipidic organic phase of the hop extract with excess alkali. The water-dispersible lipidic hop extract imparts an enhanced hop aroma and flavor upon addition to the wort at some point during the brewing process between boiling and the beginning of fermentation.

  • Patent number: 5702748
Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus that achieves improvements in weight recovery ratio and processing capability in the separation of a protein-rich component from brewer's spent grain (BSG), without reducing the protein content in the protein-rich product, and thus makes it possible to reuse BSG as an inexpensive, but superior, protein-rich resource. Brewer's spent grain in a wet state is supplied to a roll mill having a pair of rolls provided with cutting edges and rotating at a predetermined rotational speed ratio, whereby the protein-rich product of the BSG is crushed and peeled from the husk component.

  • Patent number: 5702571
Abstract: Tissue sheets, such as are useful for facial or bath tissue, can be embossed with a fine scale embossing pattern to increase bulk with a minimal loss in strength. The fine scale embossing pattern contains at least about 15 discrete intermeshing embossing elements per square centimeter (100 per square inch) and can enable the tissue manufacturer to produce premium quality tissues having adequate softness, bulk and strength from conventional tissue basesheets without layering or throughdrying equipment. Depending on the starting basesheet material, tissues having a unique balance of properties can be produced, especially for conventional wet-pressed basesheets.

  • Patent number: 5700355
Abstract: A chip feeding system for a continuous digester provides for a greater rate of delivery of chip slurry to the digester, and is much less expensive than conventional chip feeding systems, typically being only 40-50% of the height of the conventional system. An atmospheric vessel may be connected at the bottom thereof to a slurry pump which pumps the chip slurry to a conventional high pressure feeder. A recirculation loop for returning liquid from the feeder to the vessel may include an atmospheric level tank, and a liquid cooler. The vessel may have one dimensional convergence and side relief, and instead of a conventional cylindrical chip bin, the chip bin may have a hopper having two transitions with one dimensional convergence and side relief. The chip bin also may be at atmospheric pressure so that no low pressure feeder between the bin and vessel is necessary.
