  • Patent number: 4648519
Abstract: A container or bottle closure in the form of a one-piece cap. The cap is formed with a flat top and a depending skirt having means for attachment to the container neck such as internal threads which mate with complementary threads on the container. An annular flange depends downwardly from the cap top to act as a sealing between the closure and the container. A vent is provided through the cap top to equalize the container pressure to atmospheric pressure. The vent takes the form of a plurality of orifices created by a laser beam which produces a hole of a diameter of 0.003 inches or less. Gas may flow equally well from the inside of the container outwardly or from the outside of the container inwardly, depending upon the pressure difference. The orifice diameter is sufficiently small to prevent the flow of a liquid product through the holes under the same pressure difference.

  • Patent number: 4648520
Abstract: A plastic closure cap and liner retention arrangement therefor which permits installation of the liner into the cap without distortion of the liner, and thereafter effectively holds the latter captive during subsequent handling or use of the cap. The construction comprises a cup-shaped molded plastic cap having a top wall and an annular side wall, and a sealing liner carried in the cap adjacent its top wall. Internal threads in the cap wall enable the cap to be screwed onto the threaded neck of a container in the usual manner. The cap interior has a ledge structure which may be annular, and in which the liner is nested. The ledge is preferably integral with the top and side walls of the cap. With the cap inverted, and following insertion of the liner into the cap, a punch having one or more tapered working edges is applied to the ledge and displaces a portion thereof to form a retention shoulder.

  • Patent number: 4645086
Abstract: A closure device for a container is described consisting of a cap for a container and a cap lid which is pivotably mounted on the cap. The cap lid has an encircling circumferential border which projects downwardly from the upper surface of the lid. The border is a curved spherical surface segment and the cap defines a cup-shaped recess which is complementary in shape to facilitate sealing. The center of curvature of the spherical surface segment is located on the pivot axis of the cap lid. A pair of supporting plates are formed on a base portion of the cap and are guided in the pivot plane of the cap lid by parallel guide ribs so that the cap is non-rotatably mounted and pivotably mounted reliably in the recess and is sealed in every operating position relative to the container cap.

  • Patent number: 4645087
Abstract: Five embodiments of a tamper indicating molded plastic band that locks over a ledge on the closure and beneath a flange on the container. The cylindrical band is molded with continuous locking rings or interrupted tabs joined adjacent the top end bottom edge thereof and which extend inwardly and generally toward each other to form mechanical locking members. Depending upon the particular arrangement of the locking rings on the tamper indicating band, the band would be applied to the closure before or after threaded application to the container. The band may be used with a plastic or metal closure and with a plastic, metal or glass container having a threaded neck and outwardly extending radial flange therebelow beneath which the ring or tab will lock.

  • Patent number: 4645088
Abstract: A one-piece plastic cap for the application to the externally threaded neck of a bottle has an end wall with a concave inner side which is provided with at least one elastic annular lip bearing against the end face of the neck when the internal thread or threads of the skirt of the cap mate with the external thread or threads of the neck. The configuration of the lip is such that the sealing action between its annular edge and the end face of the neck increases with increasing pressure in the interior of the bottle. The external surface of the end wall is formed with reinforcing ribs which radiate from the center of the end wall and can also extend along the exterior of the internally concave intermediate portion connecting the marginal portion of the end wall with the skirt. The ribs prevent pronounced expansion of the end wall and/or intermediate portion of the cap in response to establishment of a pronounced pressure differential between the interior and the exterior of the sealed bottle.

  • Patent number: 4643321
Abstract: A tamper indicating band which can be fitted over the scuff band of a conventional screw cap. The band has a larger diameter upper ring with a retaining bead which snaps over the scuff band and a smaller diameter lower ring which has a bead which snaps over a container bead. Unthreading the cap from the originally packaged container fractures frangible webs joining the bead's upper and lower rings. Evidence of initial opening or tampering remains by retention of the lower ring around the container neck.

  • Patent number: 4640428
Abstract: A plastic closure system for containers or bottles containing liquids under pressure, such as carbonated soft drinks. A liner incorporating a high gas barrier material such as "Eval" in a relatively thin layer is positioned over the end of the container neck. The liner is mechanically designed to have increased sealing forces applied thereto due to the internal pressure acting against the liner. In one embodiment, an overcap mechanically biases the liner over the edge of the container finish with internal gas pressure acting in the opposite direction, thus increasing the sealing force. The other embodiments incorporate a seal that has an annular, enlarged edge that is trapped between the finish and cap with pressure increasing the sealing force.

  • Patent number: 4640430
Abstract: A moulded screw-cap for a container has a plurality of screw-thread ridges 24 formed internally of the skirt 19 of the cap each ridge having helical first portion 25 extending away from the top 18 and a second portion 26 of substantially zero helix angle. The circumferential distance A between the nose 28 of portion 26 and the line 29 of the lower face of portion 25 of each ridge 24 is less than the circumferential distance between the thread ridges on the container. A transition portion 27 is provided between portions 25 and 26 and, during application of the cap to a container allows the portions 26 to drop into the gaps between adjacent thread ridges on the container sufficiently to bring the upper surfaces of portion 26 into correct position for engagement with complementary inclined surfaces of the projections on the container, so that no downward pressure need be applied to the cap.

  • Patent number: 4637519
Abstract: A two part closure for a container is comprised of a flexible foil sealing disk together with a flanged linerless screw threaded closure cap. The cap's sealing flanges contact the flexible foil sealing disk on opposite edges of the container's mouth rim and, as the cap is screwed down, these flanges bring the flexible foil sealing disk into continuous, intimate sealing contact with the container rim. Additionally, the inner closure flange draws the portion of the flexible foil sealing disk situated within the container mouth tight to eliminate creases and wrinkles in the foil sealing disk. Once the closure has been opened and the foil sealing disk removed, the container can be resealed by using the flanged linerless closure cap.
