  • Patent number: 4230653
Abstract: A method for compressing powder material into at least partially spherical articles in an apparatus comprising a die and upper and lower reciprocally movable punches. The die has a center bore through which the lower punch is reciprocable. The wall at the upper part of the die bore is enlarged to form a spherical zone portion of a hemispherical cavity. The end face of the lower punch has a concave shape to form a segment of the hemispherical cavity when the face of the lower punch is flush with the die cavity wall. The lower face of the upper punch defines a hemispherical cavity which mates with the hemispherical cavity of the die. In operation, the bore and die cavity are charged with powder material and the upper punch is brought into engagement with the die. A compaction stroke by the lower punch then forces the powder material into the spherical cavity. The upper punch is then withdrawn and the compacted spherical article is removed from the die.

  • Patent number: 4230462
Abstract: A method of making cemented titanium carbide base cutting tools with increased tool life is disclosed. Substantially unoxidized carbide and binder metal powders are ground to a sub-micron particle size in the presence of a low-boiling oxidation-inhibiting ingredient covering the particles of said powders. A low-boiling pressing aid is added. The ground powders are then subjected to air drying to evaporate said oxidation inhibiting liquid ingredient and the pressing aid consisting preferably of polyethylene glycol. After compacting the waxed ground particles to a predetermined configuration, the compact is first heated to volatize the wax at an appropriate temperature and critically in the presence of a nitrogen based atmosphere which may contain 0-10% H.sub.2. The dewaxed compact is then heated to a higher second temperature level for effecting sintering in the presence of a vacuum.

  • Patent number: 4229397
Abstract: A method for forming a uniformly mixed fibrous mat which comprises feeding a continuous high tensile modulus reinforcing fibrous material and a pre-cut thermoplastic fibrous material with a lower melting point or softening point than the temperature at which the reinforcing fibrous material melts or is damaged to a rotating rotor which is provided with projections to thereby cut the continuous fibrous material and pluck the pre-cut fibrous material, dispersing the thus treated fibrous materials into an air flow to mix the same and thereafter collecting the resulting mixed materials on a net to yield the mat. The product can thereafter optionally be compressed under heat to melt only the thermoplastic fibrous material to thereby consolidate the mat.

  • Patent number: 4225546
Abstract: A method of making shaped articles from powders comprises forming a cup mold of an organic polymeric material such as nylon, cellulose acetate, polymethylmethacrylate, polypropylene or polyethylene. The inner surface of the mold corresponds in configuration with the outer surface configuration desired in the shaped article. This mold is placed in a support member and filled with a measured quantity of powder. A plunger composed of a metal having a high specific gravity is placed on top of the powder, and the mold, mold support, powder and plunger combination is positioned in the swing bucket of a centrifugal apparatus where it is subjected to centrifugal force sufficient to achieve the desired degree of compaction of the powder. The mold is then removed and subjected to treatment at a temperature which is sufficient in the first instance to eliminate the polymeric mold material, as by melting or burning, and then sufficient to sinter the powder.

  • Patent number: 4225322
Abstract: A component comprised of a composite compact, preferably diamond, and a substrate bonded to the compact. A preferred embodiment of the component is a cutter for a drill bit. The compact is comprised of a layer of bonded diamond or boron nitride particles and a base layer of cemented carbide bonded, preferably under high temperatures and pressures, to the particulate layer. The particulate layer is degradable by exposure to temperatures above a predetermined temperature. The substrate is bonded to the base layer of the compact with a filler metal which, to form a bond, requires the exposure of the surfaces to be bonded to a temperature substantially greater than the degradation temperature of the particulate layer. The component is fabricated by heating the base layer, filler metal and substrate to a temperature in excess of the degradation temperature while maintaining the temperature of the particulate layer below the degradation temperature via a heat sink.

  • Patent number: 4225553
Abstract: A thin sheet having a low rigidity is drawn while being depressed over the radiused corner of a die by elastic force or hydrostatic force to obtain a formed article whose sidewall part and flange part have no wrinkles. The force is applied through an elastic rubber provided around the punch and having an outside diameter larger than the inside diameter of the die cavity, or through an annular rigid body on which elastic pressure or fluid pressure is exerted. The hardness of the rubber is preferably approximately 70 to 85 in accordance with ASTM D 2240 Durometer A. A laminate not more than about 200 .mu.m in thickness and consisting of a thermoplastic resin film, aluminum foil and a heat-sealable resin film is drawn into a formed article or a container which is light in weight and suitable for containing foods, for instance.

  • Patent number: 4225543
Abstract: Water and particulate material are placed in the pelletizer and the pelletizer rotated. The size distribution of pellets at the output of the pelletizer is controlled by altering the amount of water, or particulate material injected into the pelletizer. The output of the pelletizer is screened into two or three discrete sized groups. The groups are periodically weighed and the ratios of their weight are compared to a predetermined standard or to the ratios of the weights of a previous set of groups. The amount of water injected into the system is altered responsively to an excess weight of either the smaller or the larger sized pellets.

Abstract: The invention relates to an installation or plant for making sintered brick blanks, which includes a material preparation plant, a press and molding device, a drying and sintering device, a discharge device and feeding means, as well as a central power source, and control and monitoring devices. The material consisting, for example, of clay, loam, clay marl with aluminum oxide and liquid medium, is prepared in the material preparation device and is formed into a strand by means of an extruder in the form molding device. The strand is then cut into brick blanks by means of a strand cutter and a wire cutter. The brick blanks are transferred with suitable transfer means and a displacement device in a defined, spaced-apart relationship, onto a transfer truck and from there onto a drying and sintering truck. A plurality of drying and sintering trucks run in a closed series through a tunnel dryer at an optimum speed for the drying process.
