  • Patent number: 4687226
Abstract: A support device for bound materials, such as a notebook binder holding pages of computer software documentation, holds the bound materials in two distinct positions. In a first position, front and back covers, along free edges thereof, are received by slots in the support device which hold the front and back covers in a substantially parallel position to each other. The support device is otherwise essentially open so that the entire spine and substantially all of the front and back covers are easily seen. In a second position, one side of the support device includes a pair of angled notches formed therein which receive lower free edges of the front and back covers. Turning the support device onto its other side allows the user of the device to place the binder in the second position, supported in the notches in an open, raised or easel position for easy access and use.

  • Patent number: 4686877
Abstract: The liquid jet cutting machine contains at least one cutting head provided with an apparatus for producing high-pressure liquid at pressures in excess of 1000 bar. The cutting head delivers a high-pressure liquid cutting jet and is preferably movable or guideable along a predetermined cutting path. An apparatus is provided for holding the workpiece to be cut at least during the cutting operation. At least the high-pressure liquid producing apparatus, preferably inclusive of a drive and/or auxiliary aggregate, the cutting head, the holding apparatus and a cutting jet collector are connected with a common frame and form a positionally displaceable transport unit. The cutting head is preferably automatically controllable in its movements by a guiding apparatus which constitutes an industrial robot. The holding apparatus may also perform controllable movements and preferably contains an infeed and/or outfeed device for the workpiece to be cut, as well as a drain device for the spent jet liquid.

  • Patent number: 4686875
Abstract: An apparatus for cutting bread products into slices, consisting principally of: a stand (1); a supporting surface (3) for the product to be sliced, carried by the stand (1); two groups of parallel cutting blades, each group being driven with an oscillating motion transverse to the supporting surface (3), the blades of the two respective groups (5', 5") being mounted alternately next to one another; and a pressure organ (6) which can be moved over the supporting surface (3) towards and away from the groups of blades (5), wherein the cutter blades of one group (5') include a different angle with the supporting surface (3) than the blades of the other group (5"), so that during cutting the blades of one group are ahead of the blades of the other, whereas an arrangement of this kind also has the advantage that the bread can deflect more easily, so that resistance is reduced and the cutting time is consequently shortened to approximately 3 seconds.

  • Patent number: 4685603
Abstract: A fastener positioning apparatus includes a magnetized engaging element for slidably holding fasteners next to an elongated member as they are pushed from a first position into a hammering position by a positioning mechanism. In the hammering position, a hammering device seats the fastener into a desired medium. The entire fastener positioning apparatus may be placed on a cart for mobile use, and controlled so as to provide automatic placement of fasteners at predetermined intervals across the medium. Alternatively, manual control may be used instead of automatic control so that fasteners are positioned in accordance with specific selection of an operator. In the cart embodiment, a feed tube connects a tray for holding fasteners with a positioning device. The feed tube may include a vibrating device to ensure proper movement of the fasteners therethrough.

  • Patent number: 4685613
Abstract: A module for selectively deploying a reciprocable tool, such as a hole punch, which is reciprocated by a press. The module includes a housing which is attached to the ram of the press. The housing retains a reciprocable tool within a bore for movement between an extended position and a retracted position. The reciprocable tool is connected to the housing by means of a telescopic linkage comprising a cone clutch having resilient fingers that selectively grip a pin. The housing includes a conical surface which engages beveled portions of the resilient fingers holding them in a closed position. A spring biases the cone clutch to its closed or gripping position unless air pressure is supplied to an air chamber which counteracts the biasing force of the spring to open the resilient fingers. When the resilient fingers are open, a shifting means comprising a spring, or alternatively a solenoid, is effective to shift the pin between an extended position and a retracted position within the cone clutch.

  • Patent number: 4683660
Abstract: A braking arrangement for a motor-driven chain saw is disclosed. The braking arrangement is actuable by a releasing device and is held in the release position against a spring force by means of a latching device. The braking arrangement includes a brake band holding member to which a brake band is fastened. The brake band can be tightened around a clutch drum of the motor-driven chain saw by means of an ancillary chain brake device provided in addition to the chain brake device, so that the clutch drum is brought to an immediate stop. This braking action occurs also if the releasing device of the chain brake device is not actuated. In this way, the chain brake device remains activated thereby enabling it to act during operation of the chain saw, for example, in the event that the motor-driven chain saw kicks back while the saw chain is running.

  • Patent number: 4682522
Abstract: An apparatus for segmenting scrap tires having a compression conveyor and three rotary shears that make perpendicular cuts into the tire. The compression conveyor centers the tire and provides forces onto the treaded periphery to buckle the tire. The compression feeds the tire to a first rotary shear having overlapping counterrotating circular shears that make at least one cut about the circumferential periphery of the tire to produce annular tire segments. The annular tire segments fall by gravity into a conveyor having a pair of auger flights which position the segments for pickup by a conveyor chain. The conveyor chain includes a number of hooks which grasp the inner circumference of the annular tire segments, whereupon they are centered for entry into a second and third rotary shear.

  • Patent number: 4681005
Abstract: A resaw has twin arbors with one to six blades mounted on each arbor. In addition, the resaw has a rotatable fence with a continuous belt along its periphery. Two side pressure rollers are mounted adjacent to the rotatable fence between an entrance to the resaw and the blades. A workbed of the resaw is made up of a series of spiked rollers. Just prior to an exit from the resaw, there is located a top roller which is mounted normal to the side pressure rollers and can move further away from or closer to the workbed. The arbors are each powered by an electric motor. The rotatable fence, the side pressure rollers and the spiked rollers are all powered by hydraulic motors connected to a single power source and all rotate at the same speed at any given time. The side pressure rollers are automatically adjustable so that they exert pressure towards the rotatable fence on any wood that is located between said rollers and said fence.

  • Patent number: 4679473
Abstract: A shearing machine is so arranged that the ram, when vertically moved, is resiliently guided by spring guides and is driven in such a manner as to be kept urged into contact with the guides. The shearing machine is provided with hold-down clamps which can firmly hold the work-sheet being sheared without damaging the work-sheet. A hydraulic pump for the the hold-down clamps is provided with a large diameter piston which will supply a large amount of flow under low pressure and damp the surge and a small diameter piston which will supply a small amount of flow under high pressure. The shearing machine is also provided with hold-up supports which will hold up the work-sheet being sheared to prevent the work-sheet from bending and curling. The shearing machine also has with a back gauge which can be used to set the widths or lengths into which the work-sheet is to be sheared but can be moved out of the way.

  • Patent number: 4679475
Abstract: A trough conveyor receives small logs from a deck to form a bundle and conveys the bundled logs lengthwise to a discharge end. The log bundle is transported intermittently to project sections of the log bundle successively beyond the discharge end of the trough conveyor, which sections are cut off to form batches of bolts by vertically reciprocable twin saw cutoff mechanism. After a cutting operation, the saws may be swung away from each other to clear the trough conveyor while the saws are being raised and, during such raising movement, the trough conveyor may be powered to feed the log bundle lengthwise to project the next bolt-making increment of the logs beyond the cutoff mechanism.
