    Abstract: Thermosetting powder coating composition adapted to provide a uniform, fine textured finish onto heat sensitive substrates, without damaging the substrate while curing the coating. The composition comprises a glycidyl methacrylate resin, 1,3,5-tris-(2-carboxyethyl)isocyanurate, a catalyst and, optionally, a second curing agent selected from the group consisting of difunctional and trifunctional carboxylic acids. The composition according to the present invention provides a fine texture finish without the need to add texturizing agents. The composition may be cured at temperatures below 300° F. so as to not damage the heat sensitive substrate.

    Abstract: There is described a curable coating composition having at least one effect pigment which, upon cure, exhibits substantially improved orientation of the effect pigment and a corresponding improvement in appearance. The composition comprises: (A) a carbamate-functional component having a hydrophobicity equivalent to or greater than that of a carbamate-functional compound (A′) which is the reaction product of: (1) a compound comprising a plurality of hydroxyl groups, at least one of which is the result of a ring-opening reaction between an epoxy group and an organic acid group, and (2) cyanic acid or a compound comprising a carbamate group, and (B) a component comprising a plurality of groups that are reactive with the carbamate functional groups on component (A), and (C) at least one effect pigment, the curable coating composition when cured having a substantially improved effect pigment orientation. Preferably, the composition further comprises particular rheology control agents.

The process includes including maintaining a flow rate through the reaction zone sufficient to provide an average residence time of less than 60 minutes and maintaining a temperature in the reaction zone sufficient to produce a polymeric product incorporating at least some of the alkanol as an ester of the polymerized ethylenically unsaturated acid-functional monomer. The polymeric product is used in various processes to produce water-based compositions including emulsions and dispersions such as oil emulsions, wax dispersions, pigment dispersions, surfactants and coatings which contain the polymeric product.

The reaction zone includes at least one primary reactor, but may, and preferably does, contain a secondary reactor.
