  • Patent number: 8724487
Abstract: A method is provided in one example embodiment and includes receiving a plurality of packets and generating a data record that is based on information associated with the packets. The data record includes a synchronized time window field that defines a time boundary at which data aggregation associated with the data record is stopped, where the synchronized time window field remains constant as the data aggregation associated with the data record occurs. In other embodiments, the method includes creating a new cache entry for new packets arriving at a network element, where the new cache entry is created in response to a value of the synchronized time window field changing. The synchronized time window field can include a window size attribute that defines how long the synchronized time window remains unchanged.

  • Patent number: 8644325
Abstract: A system, method, and node for a Routing Controller (RC) to obtain from a Path Computation Element (PCE), network resource path metrics across a plurality of domains in a communication network in which each domain includes a plurality of Border Nodes (BNs). The RC sends to the PCE, a first message requesting a first path computation between each pair of BNs. The first message contains a maximum metric-value that a path computation must not exceed for a Path Computation Client (PCC) to consider the path computation acceptable. The RC then sends a second message requesting the PCE to compute a subsequent path computation for each BN pair for which the first path computation did not exceed the maximum metric-value. The second message contains a minimum metric-value that a path metric must exceed for the PCC to consider the path metric acceptable. The RC then receives the computed subsequent path computation.

  • Patent number: 8570877
Abstract: In general, techniques are described for preparing a computer network for planned events. A network device comprising a control unit and an interface implements these techniques. The control unit is configured to be a member a maintenance association that verifies connectivity a single service instance. The interface outputs a maintenance message to an additional network device to verify connectivity between the network device and the additional network device. The control unit receives an indication to initiate a planned event capable of disrupting the maintenance association. Prior to the control unit performing the planned event, the interface generates a modified maintenance message indicating that the planned event will be performed by the network device. The interface then transmits the modified outgoing maintenance message to the additional network device to direct the additional network device to avoid detecting the planned event as a connectivity fault.
