  • Patent number: 6568688
Abstract: This invention relates to a hydraulic seal arrangement between two, more particularly co-rotating shafts of especially a gas turbine engine, where the radially outer shaft when viewed with reference to the shafts' axis of rotation has an annulus extending radially outward along its circumference into which the radially inner shaft when viewed with reference to the shafts' axis of rotation projects with a web that extends radially outward across its circumference, and which annulus can through an inlet area be filled siphon-fashion under centrifugal effect with a hydraulic medium at least in the area of the free end of the web when the shaft(s) is (are) rotating. In accordance with the present invention, means are provided for exhausting part of the hydraulic medium, said means branching off from an annulus area that is farthest away from the inlet area.

  • Patent number: 6561519
Abstract: A pair of spaced apart radial shaft seals are held together by an interlocking pair of support members. The support members form an inner cavity which is in flow communication with the annulus between the shaft seals and the shaft. The inner cavity is vented to the atmosphere by means of a partial hole formed in the outer diameter portion of the support members. Any fluid that accumulates between the seals in the annulus is permitted to drain out through the inner cavity and the vent hole. The vent hole also prevents the formation of a vacuum in the annulus during operation. A channel between the support members is in flow communication with the annulus.

  • Patent number: 6561516
Abstract: A stationary ferrofluidic seal for sealing a stationary shaft to a rotating hub. A formed magnetic is attached to the rotating hub, bounded by upper and lower members to form a shaped cavity. A stationary ring is attached to the shaft and extends into the cavity, which is filled with a conductive ferrofluid. The cavity has a uniform, concave cross section over at least part of its surface. The end of the stationary ring distal from the shaft is shaped so that in the region containing the fluid, the ring and cavity surface are equidistant from a set of points defining the seals “characteristic contour”.

  • Patent number: 6561520
Abstract: A rotary seal is provided that operates hydrodynamically in response to relative rotation even when subjected to exposure to a high fluid pressure from either side, and provides low breakout and running torque. A dynamic sealing lip having a wavy geometry provides hydrodynamic lubrication in response to relative rotation when little or no differential pressure is acting across the seal. When differential pressure exists, controlled fluid pressure-induced distortion results in a distorted dynamic sealing lip configuration that is suitable for hydrodynamic lubrication, regardless of which direction the differential pressure acts from.

  • Patent number: 6557859
Abstract: A net-shape molded elastomeric gasket for dissipating heat and providing electro-magnetic interference (EMI) shielding for an electronic device is formed by loading a base elastomeric matrix material with thermally conductive filler and EMI reflective metallic filler and injecting the mixture into a mold cavity. The gasket of the present invention provides superior sealing between the case sections of an electronic device by shielding the device from EMI infiltration along the seam between the sections. In addition, the gasket of the present invention is in thermal communication with the case sections of the electronic device to provide thermal transfer and dissipation between the separate parts of the device.

  • Patent number: 6543782
Abstract: Magnetic fluid seals containing housings, magnets, pole pieces, gaps, magnetic fluids, shafts and bearings of standard type are modified to permit operation at two levels of magnetic intensity in the gaps. During exposure to the operating pressure difference that a seal is designed to withhold, the magnetic field intensity in the gaps is maintained at a relatively low intensity. Subsequently, the magnetic field intensity in the gaps is increased to yield burst-free operation. Various embodiments for adjusting the magnetic field intensity are disclosed. These include: magnetic fluid seal with a variable magnet to pole-block spacing; seal with hollow-shaft flux intensifier; seal with surrounding flux diverter; and seal with an internal magnetic coil that furnishes opposing magnetomotive force.
