  • Patent number: 6341781
Abstract: A sealing element for a face seal assembly including a bellows portion having mounting portions at its axial ends. One of the mounting portions is designed for non-rotational mounting on a component, e.g. a shaft, and the other for retaining an annular face member. The sealing element is formed, on at least the faces thereof exposed to a medium to be sealed, from a plastics material selected from a group of plastics materials comprising PEEK and ECTFE. The sealing element serves for applying a bias force to the annular face member. The sealing element enables the design of an uncomplicated, easily maintained, externally pressurised single action face seal assembly which is particularly suitable for sealing aggressive media.

  • Patent number: 6334618
Abstract: On a radially inner surface of a sealing lip of an oil seal, radiation ray is irradiated to induce chemical reaction in the materials of the sealing lip, to form hard helical portions. The hard helical portions act like a helical groove or rib to pump oil back to oil-side to show an excellent sealing property when there is a relative rotational movement between the sealing lip and a shaft to be sealed, as well as even static sealing ability at the time there is no relative rotative movement.

  • Patent number: 6317928
Abstract: A lockable hinge device of the type having a female flap and a male flap for attachment to structures to be hinged together and having interfittable knuckles defining together a passageway. A hinge pin is insertable into the passageway to pivotally connect the female flap to the male flap. The female flap has an outermost knuckle with a longitudinal slot extending through the entire length thereof. That slot is associated with a cut provided on the edge of the male knuckle adjoining the outermost female knuckle. The flaps are thus pivotable between an unlock position where the cut is in an aligned relationship with the slot and a lock position where the cut is in an unaligned relationship with the slot. On its side, the hinge pin has along its length a tooth projecting therefrom.

  • Patent number: 6318731
Abstract: An exhaust manifold gasket for sealing between an exhaust header and a first mating flange includes a metal layer having at least two integral tabs formed on an outer periphery of the metal layer. The first mating flange further includes at least two apertures located within the first outer periphery that are correspondingly sized and positioned to receive the tabs. In one embodiment each tab comprises two contoured, resilient legs separated to form a vertical slot between the legs, and a contoured tip located at a distal end of each tab leg. The contoured tip includes a sloped portion that slopes laterally outwardly from the distal end of each tab leg along an outside edge of each tab leg and terminates in a laterally outwardly extending protrusion for providing a tight interference fit when inserted into a corresponding aperture. In another embodiment, each tab includes a serrated resilient edge that promotes tab insertion, but digs into an inner periphery of the aperture upon attempted tab removal.

  • Patent number: 6311984
Abstract: The improved bearing isolator permits the use of vapor or a combination of a vaporized substance with a carrier to lubricate bearings while containing the vaporized substance in the housing and permitting the carrier, having been stripped of its substance, to escape to the atmosphere. This novel coalescing unit also has a positive coalescence both during operation and at static condition. This invention will retain the vaporized substance in the housing after coalescence so that it may be reclaimed or reused as desired. The novel coalescing unit of this invention may be utilized with any seal assembly which will prevent or minimize the escape of the lubricant in liquid form from the housing, the coalescing member separate the mist from the carrier and coalesces the substance of the vapor to be retained within the housing.

  • Patent number: 6308957
Abstract: A brush seal designed for use between regions of high pressure differential and in an environment in which there is disturbed flow has a bristle pack sub-divided into a plurality of bristle pack regions with a leaky diaphragm between each region. The brush seal may comprise an assembly of individual seals with diaphragms between them or a single bristle pack which is sub-divided by at least one internal diaphragm. The diaphragms are preferably compliant and designed to allow a predetermined leakage flow between bristle regions. The leakage flow has several functions: it causes the pressure differential across the whole seal assembly to be more evenly distributed, and by providing an amount of flow in each pack this acts to calm the bristles thus helping to ensure each bristle region effectively contributes to the seal performance.

  • Patent number: 6302404
Abstract: A sealing device primarily for sealing off a slit-shaped space between two radially extending surfaces arranged about a shaft and axially displaceable relative to each other along the shaft includes a first sleeve-shaped seal part and an elastically resilient sealing body. The first sleeve-shaped part forms together with the shaft an axially open space facing the cooperating surface. The elastically, resilient sealing body has in an uncompressed state a cross-sectional area and/or a shape deviating from the area and/or shape of the axially open space. The sealing body when subjected to axial forces causing the sealing body surface and the cooperating surface to abut each other is compressed sealingly between the axial space and the cooperating surface, thereby creating a sealing engagement against the entrance of the slit-shaped space and against the shaft.

  • Patent number: 6299173
Abstract: A mechanical end face seal includes one seal ring having two elements, a seal face extension portion immediately adjacent a sealing face and a seal ring body removed from the sealing face. Each of the ring elements has a radial outer diameter dimension and a radial inner dimension. The seal face extension portion is defined by an annular gap separating the seal ring body from the seal face extension portion. The annular gap opens out onto the high-pressure side of the seal. The axial thickness of the seal face extension portion is much smaller than the radial dimension of the sealing face. The seal face extension portion is connected to the thicker seal ring body by means of a thin connecting “neck”, which has a small radial dimension than the radial dimension of the sealing face. Preferably, the radial dimension of the neck has a ratio relative to the radial width of the ring sealing face between about 0.10 to about 0.70, more preferably about 0.25 to about 0.60, and most preferably about 0.
