Patent number: 5386813Abstract: A vaporization chamber for fuel in an internal combustion engine has a heater associated therewith that operates the chamber at an efficient super heated temperature in the range of 350.degree. F. to 400.degree. F. This chamber has baffles that direct an angular contoured flow path of fuel and vapors for increased exposure to the heat. The vaporization chamber is associated with heat sensors that control fire extinguishers in the event of overheating or fire. The vaporization chamber as well as its inlet and outlet are closed to atmosphere and include oxygen sensors to provide an alert in the event oxygen enters the chamber. Outlet of vaporized fuel from the chamber can be drawn into the engine by engine vacuum or in another arrangement a fan is associated with the outlet to assist this vacuum flow. Electrical controls under the influence of the vehicle throttle are provided to control the volume of flow of the vapor to the engine and bypass of fuel to the outlet.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 1993Date of Patent: February 7, 1995Inventor: Monty J. Patent number: 5383427Abstract: A flexible line trimmer is powered by a two-stroke internal combustion engine. The engine is scavenged in a uniflow fashion and has a scavenging cylinder and an exhaust cylinder connected by a common combustion chamber. Each cylinder has a piston turning one of two cantilevered crankshafts that are geared through adjacent counterweights having integrally formed teeth. The crankshafts extend in opposite directions for self-balancing. One crankshaft is coupled to a flywheel fan and other coupled to a starter. A fuel and air mixture is transferred to a common crankcase for the crankshafts through an intake port located on the exhaust cylinder. The piston of the scavenge cylinder is retarded with respect to the exhaust cylinder. An exhaust window opens prior to a scavenge window. The scavenge window closes after the exhaust window. The exhaust window is shortened to improve crankcase compression. The cylinders are joined in a siamese fashion, fabricated from a single piece, and skewed toward each other.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 1993Date of Patent: January 24, 1995Assignee: WCI Outdoor Products, Inc.Inventors: Lloyd H. Patent number: 5381764Abstract: An internal combustion engine is equipped with a valve timing controller capable of minimizing the electric power consumption and frictional wear of elements. The valve timing controller can vary the valve timing of valves. A camshaft is moved axially forwardly or rearwardly by electrically energizing an outer solenoid clutch or a brake releasing solenoid, respectively. An axial movement of the camshaft results in a change in valve timing. With the exception of a transient period during which the valve timing is being varied, both the brake releasing solenoid and the outer clutch are electrically deenergized to thereby reduce the electric power consumption, and both of them are maintained out of contact with a displaceable disc 13 to thereby reduce frictional wear thereof.Type: GrantFiled: May 3, 1994Date of Patent: January 17, 1995Assignee: Mazda Motor CorporationInventors: Masaki Fukuma, Hiroaki Deguchi, Masami Nishida, Akira Asai, Hiroshi Aino

Patent number: 5381765Abstract: A keyless valve spring retainer for an internal combustion engine. The valve spring retainer has a high load strength yet can be easily assembled or unassembled on a valve stem. It includes a curved arm portion which permits the spring retainer to be located as close to the valve stem as possible yet long enough so as to be bendable for assembly or unassembly. The valve spring retainer in one embodiment clamps on the valve stem thus inhibiting rotation of the valve stem. In another embodiment, the valve spring retainer is not clamped thereon to allow rotation of the valve stem. It is adaptable to being used with a support plate for increased loading as well as externally or internally of a valve spring.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 1994Date of Patent: January 17, 1995Assignee: Charter Manufacturing Company, Inc.Inventor: Myron G.
