  • Patent number: 9284809
Abstract: An apparatus and method for controlling fluid flow in a blowout preventer. In one embodiment, an apparatus for connecting fluid lines includes a socket fluid connector and a plug fluid connector. Each connector includes a flow channel. The plug fluid connector is detachably connectable to the socket fluid connector at a connection end of the plug and socket fluid connectors such that the flow channels align. Each of the socket and plug fluid connectors includes a check valve in the flow channel. The check valve is configured to prevent fluid flow through the connector flow channels while the plug and socket fluid connectors are not connected, and to enable bidirectional fluid flow through the connector flow channels while plug and socket fluid connectors are connected.

  • Patent number: 9273438
Abstract: An environmentally acceptable leak sealant comprising lava rock aggregate (scoria) for sealing leaks in dams, holding ponds or other water-containing structures. The aggregate is selected and graded for particle size and density. Particles of different sizes cooperate to engage walls of the leak and interlock with each other to form a seal within a leak opening. The particles must sink at a suitable rate, and become entrained in water flow through the leak. Beneficially larger particles have a generally higher sink rate than smaller particles, and so arrive first at the leak to staunch a major part of the flow; intermediate and smaller particles follow to form an effective seal. Applications include sealing sluice gates, stop logs at hydroelectric dams to reduce water wastage for increased electricity productivity, for maintenance requiring de-watering of the turbine; or for sealing leaks in cracks in bedrock or concrete structures associated with dams.

  • Patent number: 9273532
Abstract: A wellhead securement arrangement releasably clamps casing strings such that they cannot move in an upwards or downwards longitudinal direction. Prior to being clamped, the securement arrangement secures the casing strings in a first position whereby cement returns are able to flow around the hangers towards the surface. Once cemented, the casing strings are released and moved upwardly, where the securement arrangement clamps the hangers into position, thus creating an axial load on the casing strings while also preventing movement in the upward and downward longitudinal directions.

  • Patent number: 9273663
Abstract: Subsea power sources and related systems include a housing having at least one first magnetic member, an internal member having at least one second magnetic member, and at least one elastic member positioned in the housing. Movement of the one or more second magnetic members relative to the one or more first magnetic members, which can be obtained by positioning the power source in a subsea environment such that forces therein contact and move the housing or internal member, produces an electromagnetic output for powering a subsea object. Contact between the internal member and one or more elastic members causes the one or more elastic members to impart a force to the internal member to facilitate continued movement and power generation. Power generated in this manner or through other means is usable to operate a subsea kill plant, usable to kill a well or operate a subsea blowout preventer.

  • Patent number: 9121529
Abstract: A rigid-to-flexible connector (RFC) is provided on the rigid pipe section instead of a pipeline end termination (PLET), and the pipe end having the RFC is raised to the surface of the sea, while leaving a portion of the rigid pipe section on the seabed. The RFC is then connected to one end of the flexible pipe section, and the latter lowered to the seabed, with the raised, end of the rigid pipe section attached, to return the rigid pipe section to the seabed. Since the RFC on the rigid pipe section is connected to the flexible pipe section at the surface of the sea, the RFC can have a simpler, lighter, technical design, resulting in significant cost, manufacturing time and quality control time savings.

  • Patent number: 9109419
Abstract: A system for maneuvering a plug in and out of a tubing hanger mounts to a subsea wellhead assembly. The system includes a tractor and an end effector that are sheltered in a housing. A control cable spools from a reel mounted on the housing and attaches to the tractor. The control cable provides communication from a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to the tractor and end effector so that commands from the ROV via the control cable control the tractor and end effector. After the housing connects to the wellhead assembly, control signals from the ROV activate the tractor to drive the end effector into the wellhead assembly and command the end effector to set the plug in the tubing hanger, or to remove the plug from the tubing hanger.
