Abstract: An intelligent agent and its client communicate using a selector known by both parties to generate and interpret messages and thereby effectively disguise confidential information transmitted in the messages from third parties. Moreover, a neural network is used to implement the decision logic and/or the message disguising functions of an agent such that the logic employed in such functions is not readily reverse compiled or scanned by third parties.

Abstract: An apparatus for canceling mailpieces includes structure for transporting the mailpieces through the apparatus; a printing device; a device for detecting the presence and location of a postage indicium on a first one of the mailpieces, the postage indicium having a machine readable portion; and a controller, operatively in communication with the printing device and the detecting device, for receiving detection data from the detecting device and for causing the printing device to print a postage indicium cancellation mark on the first mailpiece relative to the postage indicium such that the postage indicium cancellation mark does not degrade the readability of the machine readable portion. A method corresponds to operation of the apparatus.

Abstract: Systems, methods and computer program products for guiding selection of a therapeutic treatment regimen for a known disease such as HIV infection are disclosed. The method comprises (a) providing patient information to a computing device (the computer device comprising: a first knowledge base comprising a plurality of different therapeutic treatment regimens for the disease; a second knowledge base comprising a plurality of expert rules for selecting a therapeutic treatment regimen for the disease; and a third knowledge base comprising advisory information useful for the treatment of a patient with different constituents of the different therapeutic treatment regimens; and (b) generating in the computing device a listing (preferably a ranked listing) of therapeutic treatment regimens for the patient; and (c) generating in the computing device advisory information for one or more treatment regimens in the listing based on the patient information and the expert rules.

Abstract: A postage metering system includes a plurality of meter printers operatively connected as part of a metering network and operating as client meter printers on the meter printer network. At least one postal security device (PSD) is coupled to at least one of the client meter printers (local client meter printer). The PSD includes unique identification the ability to store postal value and generate digital signatures. The client meter printers function as a postage metering network wherein a client meter printer other than the local client meter printer (remote client meter printer) requests evidence of postage payment from the PSD for concluding a postage metering transaction. The local client meter printer functions as a meter server and the remote client meter printer functions as a meter client on the postage metering network. The remote client meter printer initiates a postage metering transaction in the PSD by sending a request for evidence of postage payment to the local client meter printer.

Abstract: In a preferred embodiment, a digital cordless telephone system includes a public switched telephone network (PSTN) connected to general telephones, a public switched data network for receiving and transmitting designated packet data, a plurality of digital cordless telephones, and a plurality of public base stations. Each base station is assigned to a designated service area and controls the digital cordless telephones located in its service area. A plurality of local control units are connected to respective public base stations through the PSTN, each local control unit storing information concerning the public base stations in its service area.

Abstract: A system and method for the collection of marketing data simultaneously captures at a point-of-sale all financial and non-financial data pertaining to a specific consumer transaction. An electronic invoice is constructed from the captured data and transmitted to a credit authorization location via a communication link necessarily established to transmit a credit authorization request for the transaction. The electronic invoice contains line item data for each item purchased as part of the transaction. The invoice is organized around the identification number of the payment vehicle employed by the customer to pay for the transaction, thus linking the purchasing information contained in the invoice to a particular consumer. The credit authorization location receives the transmitted electronic invoice and forwards the invoice to a data warehouse, which may be located in a location remote from the credit authorization location.

Abstract: A method is provided for automated managed health care enhanced rate renewal which utilizes a common electronic request package of specific and immutable format having locked embedded formulas to perform the necessary calculations and macros that tailor the package to suit information needs from individual providers. Submitted data is automatically compiled and stored in database using a data extraction tool integrated into the electronic form. The present invention advantageously allows evaluation of managed care providers for price and quality in a portfolio manner. In addition, the use of a common base electronic request form facilitates easy integration of data updates and modifications for all potential providers.

Abstract: A fuel dispenser includes fuel delivery components located in a service station, a card reader for reading customer credit or debit cards, a customer data input mechanism, and a video infeed line for infeeding a video signal including advertising of a product available for sale at the service station and data about the advertisement in a closed-captioning portion of the video signal. The dispenser also includes a video display screen arranged to receive the video signal and display the advertisement as a visible video program, a memory of information about products that may be advertised, and a data controller adapted to control data for the card reader and capable of reading data from the closed-captioning portion of the video program for use in a manner independent of affecting the way the visible video program is displayed.

Abstract: A computer-implemented method and apparatus for generating coupons to provide discounts for purchases includes providing a computer-based kiosk at a retail establishment such as a grocery store. A user identification of a household is received at the kiosk. The kiosk outputs a series of targeted coupons which have been assigned to the individual household on the basis of at least one attribute of that household. Images of coupons may be formatted "on the fly" from parameters set forth in a coupon record. The system may further include an enhancement system which provides tools for enhancing the coupon offer data by designating particular offers as either a targeted coupon offer assigned to individual households as a function of purchases by that household or a mandatory coupon which is assigned to substantially all households.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for automatically preparing a client communication pertaining to a financial product for a client, wherein the client communication is for combined use with a corresponding host vehicle. The method comprises providing a format for the client communication wherein the communication format includes a variable portion; inputting into a computer-accessible storage medium variable information other than a client identification; inputting into the storage medium decision information; and using the decision information to select a subset of the variable information for inclusion in a variable portion of the client communication corresponding to the variable portion of the client communication format.

Abstract: An unsupervised, discriminative, sentence level, HMM adaptation based on speech-silence classification is presented. Silence and speech regions are determined either using a speech end-pointer or the segmentation obtained from the recognizer in a first pass. The discriminative training procedure using a GPD or any other discriminative training algorithm, employed in conjunction with the HMM-based recognizer, is then used to increase the discrimination between silence and speech.

Abstract: A method and system for receiving, processing and responding to emergency medical calls for patients with pregnancy related medical problems is described. A consistent, standard and systematic process is provided which in combination with adequate training, supervision and quality assurance serves to provide a method for gathering emergency medical information regarding a patients pregnancy problems, categorizing such information into various determinant levels for appropriate response, and for giving qualified emergency medical information to callers thereby permitting "zero time" response by those at the scene. By using this invention properly a dispatcher is guided through the interrogation of callers concerned with pregnancy, childbirth or miscarriage medical problems, gathering critical information and giving the appropriate guidance to the caller.

Abstract: An order entry system is provided comprising a first computer system, a printing station computer system, a form design repository, a second computer system, a validation engine, and a pricing engine. The first computer system captures form design data and the second computer generates a form price, validates the form, and transmits a validated and priced order to the printing station computer system. The second computer is also programmed to store an index of form design files in the form design repository. The forms order entry system is also programmed to determine manufacturability of an ordered form by comparing its form design data to a set of validation rules and route manufacturability exceptions to a selected one of a plurality of exception handling locations. The pricing engine determines identified labor, material, burden, and mark-up cost components, and applies a set of pricing rules to them, to enable calculation of a form price.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for facilitating communications with a roaming mobile subscriber unit which roams beyond a microcellular communication network, such as a Digital Electronic Cordless Telephone (DECT) system. A mobility server of the microcellular communication networks is coupled to a macrocellular communication network, such as a Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) network. Wide-area mobility management functions of the macrocellular communication network are provided to the microcellular communication network and are used to facilitate call routing to and from the roaming, mobile subscriber unit.

Abstract: The present invention relates to the field of integration of applications that are executed by computer systems. In an additional focus, the current invention improves the integration of applications within workflow management systems. The basic approach of the invention to this problem are the features of input container materialization programs and output container dematerialization programs. The materialization programs are executed for an input container before the input container is passed to a process activity. The purpose of the materialization programs is to perform materialization of the input container by retrieving its data members' contents from arbitrary storage areas and/or by manipulating the data-member's contents. The de-materialization programs are executed after a process activity completed execution, and their purpose is to perform de-materialization of the output container by manipulating its data-members' contents and/or storing its data members' contents to arbitrary storage areas.

Abstract: A mutual credit server apparatus sends credit information about a seller to an inquiring buyer on a computer. Stored is a direct confidence degree about a seller from the point of view of each of a plurality of buyers. The direct confidence degree is determined by each buyer based on direct trade history. Also stored is a buyer confidence degree about each of the plurality of buyers from the point of view of each buyer. The buyer confidence degree is determined by each buyer based upon trade information from the other buyers. When a confidence inquiry is made about a seller by a buyer, a processing section calculates a total confidence degree about the seller and calculates a buyer confidence degree about each of the other buyers, each calculation being made from the viewpoint of the inquiring buyer.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for discriminating non-sounds and voiceless sounds of speech signals, recorded on a recording medium, from each other when playing back the speech signals at a varied play-back speed. The method includes the steps of setting, as a reference voltage level, an optional value between a voltage level corresponding to non-sounds and a voltage level corresponding to voiceless sounds, detecting a pitch component of each waveform of the speech signals, comparing the absolute value of a voltage level of the detected pitch component with the reference voltage level, and distinguishing and outputting a portion of the speech signal associated with the detected pitch component based on the result of the comparison.

Abstract: A system and method for aligning data in stack memory in a data processing system where the stack memory provides temporary storage for storing parameters for a function call. The method first determines if any of the parameters in the function being call are of a selected type. If a parameter is of a selected type, code is generated for aligning the parameter on a stricter boundary than the default boundary for the stack memory. Code is then generated to align the remaining parameters in the function call on the default boundary in the stack memory. The aligned parameter in the stack provides a reference point which is used by the called function to align locally scoped variables in the stack. By aligning a parameter of a selected type on stricter boundary in the stack, for example, a double precision floating point aligned on an 8 byte boundary, the execution performance of the compiled program code is improved.
