  • Patent number: 4798182
Abstract: A portable engine has a fan cover fixed to a front surface of a crankcase to cover a fan and to guide upward a blown stream of air generated by the fan, and a cylinder cover disposed behind and in series with the fan cover to cover an engine cylinder and to guide the blown stream toward the engine cylinder. The portable engine has a partition plate formed integrally with said crankcase to cover a step formed between the fan cover and the cylinder cover, and an ignition coil is fixed to the partition plate. According to this arrangement, heat of the engine cylinder will not be directly transmitted to the ignition coil to cause deterioration of the function of the ignition coil. The engine cylinder has positioning pieces which are engaged with positioning holes formed on the crankcase to allow easy assembling and a correct positioning of the engine cylinder and the crankcase.

  • Patent number: 4798185
Abstract: The pivotally mounted throttle lever on a gasoline engine powered flexible line trimmer has a flexible arm portion which is linked to the engine's pivotally mounted carburetor throttle arm by an elongated cable structure. When the linkage structure is in a "short" portion of its lengthwise dimensional tolerance range the throttle lever stroke distance is greater than that required to move the throttle arm to its fully open, actuated limit position in which it is stopped by an abutment surface. The throttle lever, when the throttle arm has been moved to such limit position, thus still has an unused position of its total available stroke distance. When the lever is forcibly driven through this remaining stroke portion, the flexible connecting arm is resiliently bent relative to the balance of the throttle lever to thereby avoid undesirably high stress levels in the throttle lever, the linkage cable and the carburetor throttle arm.

  • Patent number: 4791891
Abstract: A reciprocating piston engine having a sealing system between the cylinder head and the cylinder liner, or the cylinder block, using a metal gasket. It is proposed to improve such a system in a manner that, while large manufacturing tolerances are permitted, i.e. tolerances on the dimensional design of the cooperating parts as well as on the cylinder head bolt torque, reliable gastight sealing of the combustion chamber is ensured at all times. This is essentially achieved in that a circumferential raised portion on the liner flange is the only part that projects beyond the top end (sealing face) of the cylinder block and is matched to the metal gasket in a manner that when the cylinder head is tightened down on the cylinder block, the cylinder head gasket is always stressed above the yield point, with the metal gasket having such a stress/strain characteristic that once the yield point is exceeded, the horizontal deformation range (i.e. where the compressive stress is constant) is as great as possible.

  • Patent number: 4782795
Abstract: An engine anti-knock control arrangement controls both the ignition timing system and an evaporative cooling system so that when the engine is operating in a predetermined engine speed and load zone and engine knock is detected, the cooling system is operated to reset the temperature to which the coolant (and therefore the engine) should be controlled, to a predetermined minimum value and the ignition timing incrementally retarded until the knocking phenomenon terminates. While the temperature is dropping and knocking is absent, the ignition timing is incrementally advanced until the knock threshold is reached and thus brings the timing as close as practical to the MBT value for the instant set of operating conditions. Cyclic repetition of the ignition timing advancement and retardation holds the timing at MBT while the engine is operating in the predetermined zone.
