    Abstract: A transfusion pump includes a housing disposed to oppose a tube filled with a liquid to be supplied, a plurality of fingers mounted on the housing along a liquid supply direction to urge the tube, a drive shaft for pivotally reciprocally supporting the tube in a direction to urging the tube, cams engaged with the fingers rotatably supported by the drive shaft, a drive motor for sequentially driving the cams so that the fingers which are engaged with the corresponding cams sequentially urge the tube in the liquid supply direction, and a biasing member, arranged to be engaged with the fingers, for biasing the fingers to be in contact with the corresponding cams.

    Abstract: An extracorporeal support system has an inlet catheter which is positioned with its distal end in the right atrium or vena cava of the patient. A roller pump with an inlet pressure sensor is positioned close to its inlet to sense the pressure in the inlet line which pumps the blood through the system to any output catheter positioned in the arterial system of the patient. The system has a shunt with blocking valves to block the flow automatically in the event of an unsafe condition. The system has a microprocessor-based controller for automatic operation of the system components including a servomotor for driving the roller pump at a speed to precisely maintain the inlet pressure at a preselected point. The system includes a blood treatment device such as an oxygenator. The roller pump has an axially adjustable head which is also removable.

    Abstract: A hydraulic pump/motor in which working piston elements are arranged for radial reciprocation. A cam is arranged eccentrically to a rotor which carries the pistons. Fluid cavities are provided in feet on the pistons, in the faces of a polygon to which the feet are attached, and in bearing pads in the outer ends of the cylinders to provide hydrostatic balancing. The pistons are hollow and are equipped with check valves to prevent centrifugal force from expelling fluid from the polygon and foot cavities. The cam includes mating spherical surfaces which compensate for bending forces applied to the cam. An improved mechanism for adjusting the cam position uses inherent forces to eliminate the need for a power assist device for cam adjustment. Port plates on opposite sides of the rotor provide inlet to the unit near the axis of the unit and outlet near the outer edge to alleviate stresses and increase efficiency.

The hose pump is characterized by at least one conduit (32) which is elastically deformable and whose one end (44) ends in the interior (46) of the housing (10) and whose other end (50) ends outside of the housing (10) and which is provided in the interior (46) of the housing such that by moving at least two additional squeezing members (26) which can be moved along the conduit, the conduit is squeezable from the direction of its one end (44) into the direction of its other end (50).

    Abstract: An infusion pump system comprising means for measuring internal diameter of an associated pump supply tube formed from a flexible material, such as plastic or rubber. The means for measuring internal diameter may comprise an ultrasound system including at least one transmiter and one receiver, as well as an evaluation unit. Alternatively, a mechanical system may be employed in the form of a counterpressure unit arranged perpendicular to the axis of the supply tube and including a movable plunger and an abutment surface for compression of the supply tube to be measured. A measurement and evaluation unit associated with the counterpressure unit determines the distance traversed by the movable plunger. The internal diameter of the tube may be determined by generating a force-displacement diagram. In accordance with one embodiment, the movable plunger is a pumping rod of a linear peristaltic pump.

    Abstract: A split tube centrifugal pump comprises a pump casing divided into a pump space and a motor space, an impeller driving a conveying fluid in the pump casing, a vertically disposed shaft in the casing, the shaft being hollow and including an axial channel therein, a rotor including a channel therein, and a partition separating the pump space from the motor space. The partition includes a first aperture through which the shaft passes and a second aperture. The conveying fluid circulates between the pump space and the motor space in a circuit comprising the first aperture in the partition, the channel in the rotor, and the channel in the shaft. In a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention, the split tube centrifugal pump further comprises a filter disposed upstream or downstream of the first aperture in the partition, and a slide ring sealing associated with the second aperture and through which the vertical shaft passes.

Three wires, one for each of three motor phases, are wound about the back iron, each including four symmetrically arranged active segments toroidally wound about the back iron, corresponding to four poles in a permanent magnet fixed to the rotor.

The fluid passageway is a closed passage as for example a tube. However in certain applications the principles of this invention may be applicable to an open passage such as a trough. In one embodiment, a series of inflatable toroidal members are mounted on a tube that has a flexible wall. When sequentially inflated, the toroidal members sequentially squeeze the wall into engagement with a centrally disposed mandrel, thusly, providing a peristaltic pumping action.

The volumetric pump (30) includes an inlet cracking valve (46) and an outlet cracking valve (52) disposed on opposite sides of a plunger (48) used to displace fluid by compressing flexible tubing (34). During a pumping segment of a pumping cycle for the volumetric pump, the outlet cracking valve is closed with a cracking force that compresses the flexible tubing until the pressure of the fluid displaced by the plunger exceeds a cracking pressure, at which time the outlet cracking valve opens to enable fluid flow from the volumetric pump. A cracking flexure (182) provides the cracking force.

    Abstract: A positive displacement type pump for use in a fuel system of an internal combustion engine having a pump housing that includes a pump chamber and a vapor vent valve to allow vapor to flow out of the pump chamber. The vent valve includes a valve seat, a valve and a spring biasing the valve away from the valve seat. During pump operation, the liquid fuel flow pressure within the pump chamber is great enough to seat the valve and prevent fuel from escaping through the vapor vent valve. However, if the internal pressure drops due to a loss of pumping pressure caused by the ingestion of air or vapors, the vent valve automatically opens to allow vapor or air flow through the pump with a resultant cooling effect on the pump assembly.

An axially extending passage (40) is formed by the ends (32) and (34), through which flexible tubing (42) passes. The plenum (38) is connected to the passage (40). A pressure block (44) is slideably positioned in the plenum (38) for movement toward and away from the flexible tubing (42). The pressure block (44) has a rectangular opening (46), which receives a circular bearing (48) and a circular cam (50) which is eccentrically mounted on shaft (52). Conventional ball valves (54) and (56) are provided in the flexible tubing (42) above and below the pressure block (44). The lifetime of the tubing is substantially enhanced if the pressure block (24) depresses the tubing (42 ) no more than half of its inside diameter. When this limitation is followed, no creasing or similar localized severe distortion of the tubing (42) takes place.
